Anything by David DeCoteau (sp?) and you're set for the weekend. And he keeps crankin' 'em out, God bless him.

I think there was supposed to be some in The Talented Mr Ripley.

Well, as you know if you've seen Gods and Monsters (and if you haven't, you should), James Whale injected a little "gay/camp sensebility" into his horror movies, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Old Dark House and The Invisible Man. Bride of Frankenstein, in particular, is said to have a gay subtext, with the flamboyant Dr. Pretorious luring Dr. Frankenstein away from his wife. In the end the Monster kills Pretorious and tells Frankenstein to return to his wife, indicating that perhaps Whale wasn't quite as comfortable with his sexuality as Gods and Monsters suggests.

Let's see...Interview with a Vampire is pretty damn gay. Gothic, which isn't exactly horror, but is related to Frankenstein, that's a good one. And if you mean lesbians, there's about a billion of 'em: The Hunger, Daughters of Darkness, Lust for a Vampire, etc.

Gods and Monsters was fiction as far as I'm concerned.

Don't know much abut Whale outside that movie. What are some of the major inconsistencies?

Well, yes, it is fiction. The events depicted in the film didn't actually take place, and alot of the depiction of Whale's character was probably innaccurate. But we do know, for instance, that Whale was considerably more open about his sexuality than most of gay hollywood at the time, this is bourne out by every account of the man's life. However, I believe that Condon's screenplay reflected a 90s view of homosexuality that a gay man in the 30s simply wouldn't have had.

I agree. The movie felt too "recent".

Nightmare 2 all the way!

Def by Temptation.....

Boy did he get a surprise.

Also, the token black character in Night of the Demons would qualify. normally one flamboyant character does not count, but that pirate outfit? Too much.

I believe the recent string of "Brotherhood" movies pretty much have that "gayness" to them - right down to the stalking-boys-in-underwear camera angle.

I gotta give props to "Bride of Chucky". Not a "gay" movie, but the gay character wasn't a flaming stereotype, contributed to the plot, and had a great death scene.

I'm not sure why other horror flicks can't include incidentally gay characters who aren't the "driven to kill by their twisted desires" type.

While not a strictly a horror film, 1980's CRUISIN' with Al Pacino is one of my favorite serial killer films ... Sure, every time I mention it here the internet crickets come out, but its grim NYC locations and disturbing violence make it great in my book ... and there's never been a sleazier cop than Joe Spinell ...

Don't know if it counts as horror....but Naked Lunch has to be one of the gayest movies ever.
Oh, good call on Naked Lunch. Which is horror-ish, anyway. And how about eXistenZ, with the whole conversation about what getting that wire in the back of the neck is like, obviously implying anal sex. That's a pretty incoherent sentence, but if you've seen the movie, you know what I mean.

I seem to recall several years ago that Siskel & Ebert referenced the homosexual sado-masochistic overtones of "The Hitcher." I know it's more suspense than horror but it's the one that came to mind.

Yeah I remember renting Naked Lunch, prepared for a bizarre little movie with one of my favorite gravelly-voiced actors (Peter Wellers, natch). I was really caught off guard by the incredibly gay overtones, and a lot of blatant gay material. That is what disturbed me the most about the movie. Especially the centipede scene...

Well, Barker is openly Gay, but he has never made mention of Nightbreed being any sexual revealation pic. I think in many MANY cases, people project what they want on things like this. Tetsuo? great flick. but I got more coming to terms with modern society/technology and the losing of the self into the machine.

Not some sexual discovery.

Racists always find racism. Homosexuals always find homo-erotics overtones. etc.....

Not meant as a slam, but an honest observation. Until I hear Barker openly state that was his intent, I will still go with the whole exclusionary sub-culture coming to terms with modern society theme. Which may involve gays amongst their numbers, but felt more like the punk movement trying to find a home than anything based on a sexual preference.

DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS is very well done, as is ( in a slightly different way ) Franco's VAMPYROS LESBOS ... Even if you are not a huge Franco fan, VL is worth the cost of the DVD if ya haven't had the opprtunity to see it ...

Going out on a limb, has anyone seen FREEWAY 2: CONFESSIONS OF A TRICK BABY w/ Natasha Lyonne ??? ... I loved it, however most don't ... Not quite horror, but well worth it ...

Oh, and how could I forget GOTHIC ??? .... Haven't seen it in years, but from what I remember, aweome film ....

Man, I just remembered what might be the best example of the "Gay Horror" genre...the early Roman Polanski horror/comedy Fearless Vampire Killers, or Pardon Me But Your Teeth Are In My Neck.

What? The PUNK MOVEMENT? Where in the fuck did you get THAT one?

This film, and the novella it's derived from (CABAL) is RIFE with homo-sexual overtones. The fucking thing is about how gays are reviled - considered monsters - by many in the mainstream, and how the REAL monsters are the extremists who persecute them. Duh!

And don't give me that whole "being gay colors your judgement bullshit" either - (1) I'm not gay. (2) Clive Barker HAS talked about the damned thing. In case you haven't read much of his fiction - he's one of my favorite authors - gays are featured quite often... but not too many punk rockers. Hmmm...

"Nightbreed" about punk rockers... Wow, that's just amazing... Like punkers are even CONCERNED about how others think of them...

I'm sorry if I seem a little insensitive, here, Bullseye, and I'm not trying to be mean. But that really is one of the most ignorant statements I've ever heard. But if you want to continue to live in denial of the Breed's homoerotic overtones, be my guest. Feel free to look up on Barker's vision of the thing...

----

On a related, yet wholly different subject, one of my very best friends (and very gay, we started hanging out after he tried to pick up on me at a Rocky show my girlfriend played in - "Janet fucks Everyone!". I had to break his heart, but we became good friends from that moment on) from my No. Cal. days is actually IN that movie - he plays one of the background 'breed, totally concealed in make-up. But he ALSO plays the skinny guy in that torture-chair featured in the flashback about how the 'breed were almost wiped out in the past. Michael Swearingen is his name. Haven't seen him in years, but I have fond memories everytime I watch that flick. And it all happened because he and Clive were pen-pals - long story...

Which brings me to another great gay horror flick - "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

"I don't like a man with too many muscles."
"I didn't make him for YOU!"

Can't count how many times I've seen this flick (being on a cast will do that)...
