We now have a member named redneckjoe

He only posts in the Sex forum. FYI.
Redneck Joe was also the name of my chain of rural coffee bars, but operations were cut short as we soon learned that steamed milk and mechancial bulls don't mix.
I immediately thought of Rednex.

Don't you guys love off topic discussion and think it's lame that I think people should talk movies here? I'm just trying to focus on some of the exciting benefits of turning the board away from movie talk - you attract cool people like redneckjoe!
I do wonder how people like that even find the boards. Why not find some sex-centric messageboards? Or certain sports? Or gossip, etc etc.

I don't mean the people who post all over, but people who come to CHUD and then ONLY post in one random subforum. So weird. Is someone like redneckjoe a friend of a long-timer? Or is it just random surfing leading him here?

"Yep, this is the place." *settles in*
He's probably a shill-in-waiting.
Clearly, what the problem needs is more problem!

I guarantee someone linked one of the pictures in the sex forum on another forum and redneckjoe followed the pic URL here.

Or he reads the site but sees that the biggest discussion here is outside of the movie boards.
We should welcome him with open arms! You never know, he might have some wonderful insight concerning Total Recall.

I'm kind of "red-neckish". I don't own a confederate flag, or fuck my kin, but I'm a hick country boy.

Congrats?

I'm bored. This is boring. Can we get back to talking about food please? I like Burger King. They have crazy stuff there!

This is a real dick comment. Just saying.

I know I posted 4 times in a John Mayer thread today, but still...

He's probably angling to get a shot at Cleo, like everyone else in the sex forum.

Nick could make all of the non-movie sections invisible for the net.
You sound like Lou Dobbs harping on illegal immigrants with this one, Devin.

Yes.

Can we have the non-movie discussion whining go dormant so it can pop out in a couple of months again?

That is an option and if Nick gives the go ahead it will be done. Keep in mind that blocking all those sections would hurt revenue.

For the sake of the site I sincerely hope Nick doesn't go with this half-baked plan.

Isn't money a core problem of CHUD at the moment?

So your theory is that if people talked about other topics less here, they'd talk about movies more? Or just that you'd be able to stop tilting at windmills and talk about movies more yourself?

You have a rather large podium to encourage discussion on these boards. I respectfully suggest that you're using it wrong.

Let's look in the Foundation thread and see how quickly Devin's attitude shuts Parker and another guy down. This is precisely the problem I have with him: he wants movie discussion, but he's the last guy to positively engage in it.

I see Alex's attitude as close as perfect as it comes for a message board. He talk about his articles, and doesn't treat everyone in it (except those 3 or 4 he deems "worthy") as idiots.

And the thing is: Devin knows a lot about movies. But he's a humorless Lewis Black when it comes to the boards. And that's too bad.

Shut them down? To paraphrase Alex Trebek, are you foreign or are you retarded?

Here's how that thread went down:

1) I wrote a news article about FOUNDATION.

2) I put a provocative headline on it. I knew that the commenters wouldn't read the article and just comment on the headline, but I hoped that the people on the boards would read the article because...

3) In the article I mention that the project was a bust from the beginning.

4) Two guys rush into the thread - obviously without having read the article - and proceed to tell me I'm wrong in the headline. Except...

5) See 3), where I already said what they were rushing into the thread to tell me.

How am I shutting them down? If someone comes into a thread and tells me a point I already made in the article should I just humor them in the spirit of fostering discussion? Should I pretend that I didn't make the exact same point and let them feel like they schooled me?

Here's the thing: ignoring the discussion and just posting your contextless thoughts is just as bad for discussion as posting in the Sex forum all day. A discussion requires you to read what the other people are saying. In this case that means reading the initial article that begins the discussion.

So yeah, I'm a pretty awful guy.

If that's the case and non-movie discussion threads are being kept. Why have the grief? If it's such a matter of importance, rip the shit out and be done with it. If not, don't bother. Or get the mod powers you desire and ban the people you don't like or whose opinions you don't jive with it. You'll get what you want and people will go somewhere else.
A new member's getting singled out and Devin's trolling every regular visitor the site has. It must be Thursday.
What have we learned?

People like sex more than movies.

Perhaps Devin should start a forum section on Porn, then everyone could be happy!
It really wouldn't hurt to get rid of the sex forum...but while we're at it can we get rid of Princess Kate and maybe even Ms. Cleo? Or charge her advertising costs for her burgeoning business.
Devin's leftist attitude is probably what offends him more by having a member that conjures up images of the South and Joe the Plumber.

*EDIT* KingCujo has a good idea, Princess Wiki ought to be let go.
Seriously, why doesn't someone just give Devin banning powers? Wouldn't that solve all of his problems?

Do you really want me, or other people, to dig out posts where you're a dick for no reason at all? It's pretty common. And you called me " a despicable human being" when Howard said he has AIDS in the Evil Whore thread. For no reason. Sorry to tell you that, and I don't know you in real life, so an online persona is probably a twisted mirror of someone's character, but you really come off as an asshole in most threads you're in.

And that retarded thread in the Sex forum? Hell, IggytheBorg, a pretty good poster, engaged you in the non-movie arguments you make. You never responded.

Here's the core thing:

You have a vision of what the boards should be, but you should talk with your boss for that. Because the manager, you is pissed at something the owner doesn't seem to have a problem with at all.

Devin didn't "shut them down" though. He simply called them out on not having read the entire article. That's not exactly evidence of unwarranted snark. He actually showed a fair amount of restraint in doing so.
So because two dumbfucks failed to read an article and made dumb statements. This requires yet another tirade where everyone who has made a comment that isn't up to one person's standards of what "movie discussion" is to be shitten on.

Yeah, bad exemple, but the again Devin's article said this:

Quote:
Of course the finer points of Asimov's work were going to be lost the moment that Emmerich was announced, but now we know that we can thrill to council meetings in 3D mocap. I can't even imagine how radically different Robert Rodat's script is going to be from the real books.
Is it worth responding in kind to Parker and Zim? So now it's not only talking about movies, but there's a quality standard? Pertinent posts only?

Fine. But there's won't be more discussion generated by that attitude.
I'm honestly curious, what kind of movie discussion does he want? Does he want us to comment on his articles more? Post in the films in release thread more? Talk about foreign films?

What exactly is it that you want more of Devin, aside from just general movie discussion.
Don't misinterpret what I said to mean that I condone his behavior 100% elsewhere on the boards. I simply stated that he wasn't in the wrong for having said what he did to Parker and Sgt. ____. They should have known better than to comment on that article without having read the whole thing first.

CHUD is my vacation, not my job, so I rarely concern myself with these arguments about how the site is run, how it should be run, or why, and I accept (rather painlessly since I have no real stake in the place) that all of the ancillary forums are the byproduct of establishing a *community* in the first place.

That being said, having just perused the B Action Thread and witnessing a mini-explosion of off topic titty-picture posting and masturbatory fantasies (not calling out anyone, honestly) I figure that brings it back to the primary function of the aforementioned ancillary forums, to keep to a minimum, the derailing of such and such thread with talk of how Christina Hendricks has the "best huge breasts of any huge breasted woman in the history of this universe and the last".

I guess I'm stating the obvious, but as a person with almost no worries about the politics of this site, I have to say that in this case, creative problem solving seems to me to be more attractive than combative problem solving.

When I see the John Mayer thread get to 3 pages in a few hours or that Paying For Sex thread keep on trucking and most threads about movies - anything about movies! - stagnate it makes me sad. I don't go into movie threads telling people how to post. I think the 'I DO Have Bad Taste' thread is stupid and wrongheaded, but whatever, it's about movies. Have at.

I've said it 1 million times before and been attacked for it every time - this is a site about movies and ancillary geek things (books, games, TV). Yet the movie boards, while taking up the most real estate, often seem to be the least trafficked. My belief is that the evolution of this board into a general everything/nothing board - mostly off-topic convos - attracts people like redneckjoe, who doesn't seem to be a bad guy or anything but who is obviously not interested in talking about movies.

My craaaaaaazy vision of the board is a bunch of film fans who talk about film and books and TV and games and once in a while talk way off topic bullshit. It makes me sad that there are members who rack up most of their large post count in threads that have nothing to do with this site.

And no, I'm not just looking for comments on what I write on the main page, although god knows smart comments - dissenting or otherwise - are appreciated. I just want movie talk. Hell, I've even realized I was wrong about Moltisanti - I don't like him, don't think he's funny, don't think he's interesting, but 90% of his posts are about movies/related stuff.

Damn.

I actually feel bad that I haven't seen nearly enough movies recently to comment. I wish I had more to contribute in movie related areas.
