You've gotta let the t-shirt tiff go.

That's a good point too. Fuck, since I had a baby, I've been in to a theater 7 or 7 times. In 2 years. Though to follow an Avatar thread if I've seen it 2 months after the rest of the boards. I'll try to follow, but at that point, there's nothing to add.

Has redneckjoe had more than the one post? Also, loving the Bob Burns stuff...can't wait to see more of the pictures.

Also, take ten steps back away from what you're trying to shoot. Point away from traditional overhead lights at a 45 degree angle. It sounds like a lot of shit, but it works.

I've said it 1 million times before and been attacked for it every time - this is a site about movies and ancillary geek things (books, games, TV). Yet the movie boards, while taking up the most real estate, often seem to be the least trafficked. My belief is that the evolution of this board into a general everything/nothing board - mostly off-topic convos - attracts people like redneckjoe, who doesn't seem to be a bad guy or anything but who is obviously not interested in talking about movies.

My craaaaaaazy vision of the board is a bunch of film fans who talk about film and books and TV and games and once in a while talk way off topic bullshit. It makes me sad that there are members who rack up most of their large post count in threads that have nothing to do with this site.

And no, I'm not just looking for comments on what I write on the main page, although god knows smart comments - dissenting or otherwise - are appreciated. I just want movie talk. Hell, I've even realized I was wrong about Moltisanti - I don't like him, don't think he's funny, don't think he's interesting, but 90% of his posts are about movies/related stuff.
Can someone cross-stitch this post and put it above the CHUD fireplace? Thanks!
agree'd

I've really tried to up my activity in the Film Threads and Feel I have gotten a couple of interesting discussions out of it.
I see most films on DVD, whereas I watch TV and play many games when they're new. This tends to make me feel more relevant posting in those forums where I'm not months behind the topic.

Perhaps Devin (or someone else) should try a "DVD movie of the week club" column/thread. It might help focus discussion in an inclusive manner and shed some light on hidden gems (or shed new light on favorites).
Isn't that pretty much the same as the film of the month club?

If you have any interest in changing the way people post, this is how you do it. Trying to affect change by starting threads like this one is just obnoxious.

I get that Devin feels passionately about this. But I agree with Evi. When Devin comes at the issue with his usual snark, the conversation inevitably becomes about Devin and his snark.
I still don't understand why he keeps yelling at us about this.
Go yell at Nick. He's the enabler.
Devin, if all you want is an exclusive little club where people dissect the intricate plot details and lighting of your favorite films, then hand pick your little group of chosen followers, give them limited user admin rights and confine yourselves to a password-protected section of the boards where everyone will follow your lead and agree with you. Those types of threads already exist; just create more of them. You can have your own little CHUD Rapture with sooting elite discourse, while the rest of the mouth-breathing public make themselves laugh over topics you find irrelevant.

You are nothing if not part of the problem here. It's like you enjoy monitoring threads you hate, just so you can descend from up on high and tell people that they're stupid. Almost all of your posts are just you stamping your feet and yelling that the board isn't what it should be. You're like a child at their own birthday party who got the wrong type of pony.

If a restaurant opened, and the owner spent each evening walking around the dining room telling people they didn't know shit about wine and and how they wished people who really understood food would eat at their establishment instead of tourists and morons, then that restaurant would go out of business very quickly.

You can't control the Internet. Please just stop, already. You've become unbearable.

I think it's more like if you opened a fancy Chinese restaurant and people keep ordering the few non-Chinese items on the menu. Over and over.

But then do you lose patrons by taking french fries off the menu?
I also think it would help if everyone would stop bumping threads they hate by posting in them about how much they hate them. We get a dumb thread, and inevitably everyone piles in to either make fun of it or berate the people posting in it, and the thread stays at the top of the New Posts lists for a week. Just let it die.

It's like if you worked for a chinese restaurant and people kept ordering chicken fingers and fries and you were all like fuck you order chinese food and they were all like but fries are on the menu and you're all like fuck you you're stupid and they're all like let me see the owner and you're all like fuck you he's out taking pictures of dumb things to hang on the wall!

No, you give the people what they want, and you don't lose sleep over a few fatties gorging themselves on fried shrimp. Meanwhile, you go back in the kitchen and make yourself some kickass duck. Everyone wins.

That's pretty awesome there. So I guess it's pretty obvious why Nick hasn't given Devin free reign over the boards.

He'd complete kill the entire thing in less than a week. Nick's seems too smart to put his entire investment in the hands of that mad man!

I actually don't get this. We've been told many many times how small the board constituency is in comparison to the main sites readership, and on the main site, Nick has granted Devin 100% control over the content, so why not the message boards if we're such a drop in the bucket?

I say this without snark, I know Nick has domains out the ass, why not keep CHUD the way it is (since I'm pretty sure it's still viewed as a fun, if somewhat corrupted playground), and create a movie only board, CHUD Plus, or whatever, where off topic conversation is simply not allowed? As a matter of fact, wouldn't that add traffic?
No, it would just move traffic from here to the new site, with the added trouble of running a second message board.
It would move movie only traffic. All traffic still going into the main sites revenue, and I would bet a board exists already.

There are changes coming.
There are already threads that I can't view due to permissions. Just open a private sub-section on this site. No one will know what they're missing, and the discussion can be the movie website equivalent of the Harvard Club, which I'm sure is as much fun as it sounds.

I'm not an alt. I just turn up when the Internet cries out for justice.
But we already have movie-only forums here. I'd rather see a push to get people to post in those more than the creation of a whole new board somewhere.
Well, it's pretty much bullshit to say all non-movie discussion threads are meritless. Alex's videogame threads, the Thud discussions, for example are not the problem. Great discussion in those that fits right in the the board community. It's stupid shit like Cleo's abomination or crap like devoting a thread to a single idiot like this one.

ETA: Why is it not possible to eliminate diseased threads on a case by case basis and actually fix the problem, unless just having an opportunity to endlessly bitch and moan is the point after all.

Oh, I recognize that Scorched Planet quote. Nice knowing you.
What? I don't even know what that means.

I thought you had access to IP's to ferret out alts. Could it be I just have an opinion on how you treat your own site visitors?

Edit: Is "Scratch" the new movie-discussion-only forum?
Thread Starter
If you have any alts that use this same IP, we'll delete those as well. We both know you use a proxy, though, and probably have other accounts just waiting for this one to be deleted. Good trolls are always prepared, right?
This is how you address conflict? Check my IP, and then check my post history. A single IP, and a varied post history. There are plenty of instances where I call you out for negativity or hypocrisy. There are also plenty of instances where I discuss movies and video games and current events.

I've been visiting this site for 10 years. If your reaction to a dissenting opinion or criticism of your methods is to label that person a troll or an alt and then ban them, I guess I'm at your mercy. I just hope everyone takes note of it.

For the record, I don't even know what a "proxy" is. I'm computer literate, but you're giving me way too much credit (and free time). I check the boards mostly from work, and rarely at home.

No, I read it, and I get it, and I find myself in complete agreement with Devin on this.

I was just (admittedly, very awkwardly) trying preface the idea to just kill individual threads that are the worst offenders. It's moot anyway, if there really are big changes on the horizon.

-edited for clarity........maybe-

Post 1: Reasonable, but snarky request
Posts to follow:
- persecution complex
- snark
- someone who says something that is easily proven to be false and/or attacks poster for something that was inferred
- someone shows up to prove that the butthurt are complaining about poster not the issue at hand or have turned the conversation into something else
- someone says "oh, now I get it. Why couldn't you spell it out for me?"
- Doug acts like an asshole (note: sometimes in a funny fashion)

HOW TO AVOID:
- Take the advice, recognize that you're being treated like - mostly - an adult, and either change the way you post or don't, but don't complain about it. The only people who get banned here are trolls or shills, and divisive figures like Princess Kate and Duke Fleed have not been banned. As long as you don't start shilling A-Ha's greatest hit, no one is going to keep you from making stupid jokes. But, hey, talking about movies on a movie site is not really a radical idea. Yes, there is a community, but the idea was that it was a community formed and started for people who like/love films.
I've been hunting high and low for a community like this.
We all like to talk movies, but more often than not we are talking about OUR EXPERIENCE of watching the movies, because ultimately we like talking about ourselves. And that's where it gets muddled. Every person typing on here likes talking about themselves. Me, you, Ron Price. All of us.

We're all guilty of it, and to get offended and pretend that it doesn't get just a wee bit over the goddamn top sometimes is nonsense. And when we get reminders every so often, we can either say "hey, you know what, I have other people in my life to talk recipes and cars and why my stool is so lumpy," and maybe dial the dear diary shit back a notch or two, or we can argue. Because SCORE! When we're arguing our right to talk about junk food and sexual positions, we're STILL talking about ourselves. That's why this will be at three pages soon.

A little self-discipline never killed anyone (said the asshole with 14,000 posts). A little balance is good for the soul. When your response is: "I can't add to the movie threads, by the time I see a movie", I wonder why you think there's some post quota you GOTS to fill with a post about SOMETHING. And that response seems to indicate that you understand a post should have VALUE, so I know you know the diff between good shit and bad. And when your response amounts to "Well, you should ask nicer!", then you've given me my chuckle for the day.

As has been pointed out dozens of times, there is a collection of smart, interesting film fans on this board that does not exist anywhere else! All you gotta do is help maintain. Stop bitching about the absentee landlord and clean up the lawn. Posts should be good posts! Threads should be good threads! It's as easy as that. You're going to fuck that up once in a while but I believe in you, and I want you to keep trying!

Love,

Phil
Yeah, but I've never seen that list before, and don't have time to watch/rewatch a movie a day. I don't even have time to properly discuss a movie a day. I guess some people do, but it seems like that kind of pace would fragment discussion rather than focus it.

So Scratch was Banned?

I just checked his post history, really varied and mostly on topic.

What the fuck?
This is horrible.

Screaming and moaning and fighting, and a long time poster has been banned. (And Scratch looks to me like he posted in lots of threads that didn't involve Devin).

It's fucking FEBRUARY. There are no interesting movies out in general release. THAT'S WHY NO ONE IS TALKING MOVIES.

It's a seasonal thing that will pass, as it does every year, when the winter release dead zone passes. It didn't require all this sturm and drang.

This is one of the most lenient boards you can find. We let people just do their own thing with incredibly few exceptions. There are almost no rules. And yet you still whine when we try to enforce the very few rules that are placed on this free service that you use all day every day. Don't be so childish.

Yeah, I should have added, I really don't give a shit if you banned Scratch or are banning BusterG, I actually think it's funny that you've turned this months "You guys don't talk about movies enough" bitchfest into an honest to god stake burning session. Again, I actually think it's funny. I've come to realize I put too much stock into this argument every time it comes up, and I don't know why, it's not like it has any consequence. Shit, even if I get banned...it's not like you're taking away my birthday.

I think it's the way it came through in the body of the posts themselves. We don't necessarily have access to the info that you do.

Just a bit of Devils Advocacy Regarding the IPs...wouldn't family members (Spouses, siblings etc) that use the same internet account in a home have the same IP?

(I still think that Princess Kate is an elaborate prank...a MichaelBay fully realized if you will.)
