When I see the John Mayer thread get to 3 pages in a few hours or that Paying For Sex thread keep on trucking and most threads about movies - anything about movies! - stagnate it makes me sad. I don't go into movie threads telling people how to post. I think the 'I DO Have Bad Taste' thread is stupid and wrongheaded, but whatever, it's about movies. Have at.
I've said it 1 million times before and been attacked for it every time - this is a site about movies and ancillary geek things (books, games, TV). Yet the movie boards, while taking up the most real estate, often seem to be the least trafficked. My belief is that the evolution of this board into a general everything/nothing board - mostly off-topic convos - attracts people like redneckjoe, who doesn't seem to be a bad guy or anything but who is obviously not interested in talking about movies. My craaaaaaazy vision of the board is a bunch of film fans who talk about film and books and TV and games and once in a while talk way off topic bullshit. It makes me sad that there are members who rack up most of their large post count in threads that have nothing to do with this site. And no, I'm not just looking for comments on what I write on the main page, although god knows smart comments - dissenting or otherwise - are appreciated. I just want movie talk. Hell, I've even realized I was wrong about Moltisanti - I don't like him, don't think he's funny, don't think he's interesting, but 90% of his posts are about movies/related stuff. |

I see most films on DVD, whereas I watch TV and play many games when they're new. This tends to make me feel more relevant posting in those forums where I'm not months behind the topic.
Perhaps Devin (or someone else) should try a "DVD movie of the week club" column/thread. It might help focus discussion in an inclusive manner and shed some light on hidden gems (or shed new light on favorites). |

If a restaurant opened, and the owner spent each evening walking around the dining room telling people they didn't know shit about wine and and how they wished people who really understood food would eat at their establishment instead of tourists and morons, then that restaurant would go out of business very quickly.

I think it's more like if you opened a fancy Chinese restaurant and people keep ordering the few non-Chinese items on the menu. Over and over.
But then do you lose patrons by taking french fries off the menu? |
|
Nononono
It's like if you worked for a chinese restaurant and people kept ordering chicken fingers and fries and you were all like fuck you order chinese food and they were all like but fries are on the menu and you're all like fuck you you're stupid and they're all like let me see the owner and you're all like fuck you he's out taking pictures of dumb things to hang on the wall! |

He'd complete kill the entire thing in less than a week. Nick's seems too smart to put his entire investment in the hands of that mad man! |

Well, it's pretty much bullshit to say all non-movie discussion threads are meritless. Alex's videogame threads, the Thud discussions, for example are not the problem. Great discussion in those that fits right in the the board community. It's stupid shit like Cleo's abomination or crap like devoting a thread to a single idiot like this one.

No, I read it, and I get it, and I find myself in complete agreement with Devin on this.
I was just (admittedly, very awkwardly) trying preface the idea to just kill individual threads that are the worst offenders. It's moot anyway, if there really are big changes on the horizon. edited for clarity, maybe. |

So Scratch was Banned?
I just checked his post history, really varied and mostly on topic. What the fuck? |

Amazing. We ban almost no one, almost never, and it's a witch hunt when a guy - who has been a pain in the ass forever, mind you - outs himself as a troll and then we look up his IP and see he has multiple accounts, which is a bannable offense all on its own.
This is one of the most lenient boards you can find. We let people just do their own thing with incredibly few exceptions. There are almost no rules. And yet you still whine when we try to enforce the very few rules that are placed on this free service that you use all day every day. Don't be so childish. |
