Halo: Reach - Page 4

Just finished Legendary, the last level took me about 2 and a half hours with a ridiculous number of deaths.

All-Chud Rumble Pit sounds like an awesome idea.

Yeah it took me about two and a half hours. It’s odd because there’s nothing in the level which is outright difficult as the end of Exodus or the Corvette, but it’s full of irritating encounters which just go on and on.
I'm sure my neighbors were wondering what the hell was going on yesterday when I was playing Exodus. The end of that level was pissing me off so much. Copious amounts of barely coherent profanity spewed forth.

There were a few spots in that level that gave me a ton of trouble. First, it took me forever to find a good way to defend the elevator midway through the level (the Jackals proved to be more of a problem than even the Brute Chieftans). Second, I was killed several times by grenades magically thrown over several layers of cover when the enemy barely knew I was in the room, let alone my specific position. Third, the section with the two turrets on the balcony gave me fits for various reasons. Finally, by the time I got to the missile launchers on the beach, I was completely out of patience and somehow managed to kamikaze my way into the building to push the big red button right as I died.

All told, it took me a bit over three hours to finish that level. Some of the other levels have taken me a long time to finish, but 2 hours or so was the max before I tackled Exodus. Exodus has easily taken the top spot on my "I will NEVER play this level on Legendary again" list.
You'll hate me then because I thought that level was easy, only took 2 tries for that elevator bit.

This game needs more chandeliers
I actually found Exodus to be not bad at all until the finale in the park, and then my issue was with psychic tanks more than anything else.
In co-op I'd just sneak round the beach, grab the active camo armor ability and then stealth up to the wraiths and take them out (and flee). Or press the button or whatever. Having someone around to spawn on makes everything way easier though.
Supposedly they've scaled the difficulty for co-op this time, but spawning on teammates far outweighs whatever they did. The levels are much harder going solo.

Callahan, I think the elevator section gave me trouble at first because I picked a poor place to defend AND I didn't have any good weapons on hand to start with. I'd have to take out an enemy or two before I could get anything good.

Also, I think I was making the last parts of the level harder on myself by getting way too pissed off and impatient. I am definitely the type of person that can get pissed off at a section of a game, fail miserably to beat it due to impatience and frustration, and then come back later only to beat it easily, wondering what was so difficult the first time around.

Admittedly it wasn't too bad apart from one Brute with a Fuel Rod cannon, I just couldn't take him down and ended up charging him with a shotgun. Thinking about it, Fuel Rod Brutes may be my Kryptonite because the landing pad on Exodus wasn't a problem apart from that one guy.
I played some 3-player Legendary on co-op and shooting the upper-tier Elites is just exhausting. You need all 3 players shooting the guy at the same time to manage to get his shields down and kill him. It's just painful. Playing on Legendary Solo is actually a bit easier in that regard.

But yeah, respawn ability tips the scales back to the player in a huge way simply because it becomes a war of attrition where I run in throw grenades and if I can take one guy out eventually we'll make it past it. Plus, if I need more ammo I'll sometimes just kill myself because I know it'll respawn me with some.

ETA: Fuel Rod guns kind of suck against the jetpack because you don't have to worry about splash damage. So that guy is not too bad if you can get out and start jetpacking around.
We've got a good group going on XBL if anyone wants to do some matchmaking for the daily challenges. We have 5/8 people right now.
Rumble Pit was fun, but I think next time we should try some Big Team Battle, so we can work as a team. A few of those games tonight became a little tense!
FUCK YOU MAC!!!!!

But seriously those were some good games, which would have been better if I didn't come in second every game.

Give yourselves over to the Church of the Armor Lock and yay, from the smallest needle to the biggest Warthog, all shall break upon you like a wave.

For in the final hour of the great conflict on the fields of Hemorrhage, the Ghost did beareth down upon the lone Spartan, but he did not falter, for he was of the Church of the Armor Lock, and he did strike a mighty pose and his body shone with the power of the awesome and the Ghost did shatter into pieces upon meeting his glowing visage.

Amen.

Amen brothah! Amen.

Many a Ghost have fallen prey to our divine intervention.
Have you guys tried any of the custom maps? My favorite is "A Dig to China", which really changes the whole dynamic of Infection.
good times last night Master Shake.

I am a proud card carrying member in the Church of the Armor Lock!!!
The epic Rumble Pit matches were awesome. My favorite was the insane Oddball game on the Countdown map where you were lucky to hold the ball for more than a couple seconds. There were so many grenades going off ALL the time.

On another note, I finally finished the campaign on solo Legendary yesterday. The last mission became a bit of a grind, but I made it through despite having little ammo for a large portion of it.
The only achievement that I don't have now is the one for buying something from the armory that requires the Lt Col rank. I am slowly climbing thanks to daily challenges and spamming a few commendations during the campaign. Still, I am a few thousand points away from Major rank.

Looking at a handy dandy ranks chart I found online, it looks like I am still about 125,000 points away from Lt Col. I guess I'm gonna be playing a ton of Firefight as it seems I get the most points there. Hopefully I'll make a big dent in those remaining points over the weekend.
Yeah, it takes something like 450k cR to get Lt. Colonel. Something I realized a bit too late after my decision to try to get 1000 achievement points on the game.
The first DLC for Reach, the Noble Map Pack, is coming November 30th. It comes with three "new" maps and 250 points worth of new achievements all for 800 points of Microsoft money.

Three maps for 800 points? I don't think it's worth it for me, especially with the long wait. I'll be pretty much done with Reach by then. Unless Bungie has something special up their sleeves for future DLC (single player DLC? Awesome firefight maps?), I doubt I'll be playing Reach regularly after another week or two. Once I hit Lt. Colonel for that last achievement, I'm putting Reach away for a while.

But I'm sure the new map pack will include new ranks.
Oh sure, new ranks will be in there, and I'm sure some of the achievements will revolve around leveling up to Super Galactic General or something. There are so many game I want to play between now and the end of the year that I'm just not sure I will care about a tiny map pack by the time November comes around.
It took me long enough, but I finally finished the campaign on normal difficulty last night. I'm very satisfied with how Bungie handled this one from start to finish and the full-circle nature of the ending and the rest that followed was probably the best way they could have done it, ending on a graceful note right back where they started and a little bit beyond.

Hopefully I can find time to play through again on some of the harder difficulties, or at least tinker with them. I got the game on day one so my experience was a bit fractured with all the starts and stops along the way before finally getting to the end, but it was a good ride nonetheless.

I'm planning to try to hop on to the multiplayer a bit more too, so I'll have to get a feel for whether or not the new maps coming down the pike are gonna be worth it for me.
If you just finished the campaign on normal, I can't imagine how long it'd take you on Legendary. I'm slogging my way through on Legendary now (just started Exodus) and it's so painful.

I played through a level on Normal yesterday for the daily challenge though and it was so much fun. It's kind of awesome to run into a bunch of guys and beat the crap out of them. None of this leave cover, fire two shots, hide until my shield recharges crap. It was funny how different of a game it is.
So, Reach has been out for a little over a month. I can say that this is my favorite Halo game since the first one.

Surprised that no one has mentioned yet about Bungie banning the cheaters as well as wiping their credits. I could only get through the first few pages on that forum. The level of entitlement with some of those people is scary. They sound like crackheads. Really.

Almost at Lt. Colonel - never thought I would even get over the Warrant Officer hump.
I just made it to Major Grade 3 this weekend thanks to some daily challenges, so I'm hoping to get to Lt Colonel sometime this week. Then I'll be able to have a complete 1000 achievement points in the game for about month until the new pack comes out.
How did you get that far, just by doing daily challenges or did you work on specific commendations? I'll get to Lt Colonel but probably the day before the DLC is released at the rate I'm going.
Yeah, I entered the 66K death valley between Warrant Officer Grade 3 and Captain and having finally finished solo Legendary don't know that I'll be able to make myself slog through it.
Well starting tomorrow I'm going to be neck deep in New Vegas so I think I'll just pop on nightly for the daily challenges and do the easy ones but that's about it.

A combination of both, pretty much. According to my bungie.net profile, I've done 71 daily challenges and 5 weekly challenges so far. I usually just try to do the ones that are worth a significant amount of points. As far as commendations go, it says I am at 39%.

So really, I've played fully through the campaign twice, heroic co-op and solo legendary, and I've played a bunch of standalone missions here and there. I've played a little bit of multiplayer, enough to get a few commendations started (none higher than bronze). I've played a ton of firefight: normal, rocketfight, sniperfight, score attack, gruntpocalypse, you name it.

Here are my time stats for each mode as broken down on my profile:

Invasion - 2 hours
Arena - none
Competitive - 14 hours
Campaign - 43.5 hours
Firefight - 30 hours
Custom - 2.5 hours

Damn! I didn't realize how much Reach I've actually played. It didn't seem like that much, but I guess it was pretty much the only game I was playing for about a month.
Once I realised I'd never get that stupid 'assassinate an Elite to break your fall' Achievement I gave up on trying to get Lt. Colonel. Seriously tempted to trade it in towards Castlevania.
That one took me a lot of tries but eventually I got it. Got really good at jumping off the cliff at the beginning of The Pillar of Autumn though.
I think I got lucky with that achievement. I've only been able to assassinate that elite a couple times. There are a ton of Noble 6 corpses at the bottom of that cliff. I kind of wish I had footage of all my attempts just so I could edit it all together scored to the 1812 Overture.
Well, what makes it hard is that you can't assassinate while sprinting but you generally can't make it to him without sprinting for the majority of the jump. So you have to run, jump to where he is, turn off sprint, and get the assassinate animation all within a few seconds. And he's not in the same spot every time so you can't just keep jumping to the same place.
The jumping actually isn't that difficult.

You just walk up to the cliff, wait for the elite to start moving to one of two spots that are close enough, back up a couple steps, sprint to the edge, jump at the last possible second (when you actually start to go down a little bit), keep sprinting as you fly through the air (I like to imagine Noble 6 is actually still running in mid air but I've never checked), wait until gravity starts to pull you down about halfway there, stop sprinting, stare straight downwards at your victim, hit the melee button at the last possible second when the elite all but fills the screen, remember to keep holding it down, and hope the elite hasn't decided to wander off to pick a flower somewhere before you land making you look like an idiot when you slam into the ground.

What's so hard about that?
That achievement was a BITCH to earn. It's doable, but it'll take many tries.

Yay, join the flock at the Church of the Armor Lock, and those who seek to do harm unto you shall experience the swiftest of retributions.
Finally made it to captain. The thought that I've got to play as much Halo as I have so far AGAIN to get to Lt. Colonel makes me want to cry though.
For those that don't know, the level cap was lifted today for Reach. I hit the cap about 6 days ago, and was surprised that I was already promoted to Commander.
I think there were going to be new armory items as well. Sadly, I just made it to Captain Grade 1 though so it'll take a while if I want to make it past that. My current goal is the Onyx commendation for firefight headshots.

New Firefight playlists coming soon as they're currently testing them and looking at Bungie's sight, these might only be temporary but I hope not, I'd like the variety to be permanent.

1 team of 4 takes on the crazy Firefight experience. Teams have unlimited lives as they play for 15 minutes.

Fistfight: (Based on Rocketfight with weapon pickup enabled, Hammers and Sword starting weapons, added 200% Damage and Melee modifier, 2 each grenade count, Player Movement 120%, enable Grunt B-day, IWHBYD and Cowbell skulls, disabled dropship, 2X Overshields, Skirmisher Bonus Round, Loadout 5 is Hologram, 5 Second Respawn, added Heretics into Waves)

Nadefight: (Based on Rocketfight with weapon pickup enabled, Grenade Launcher and Concussion Rifle starting weapons, added 150% Damage and Melee modifier, 4 each grenade count, enable Grunt B-Day, IWHBYD and Cowbell skulls, disabled dropship, 2X Overshields, Skirmisher Bonus Round, Added Evade for Armor Lock, and Hologram for Dropshield, 5 second respawn, add Heretics)

Rocketfight (weapon pickup enabled, add: 150% Damage and Melee Modifier, 2 each grenade count, enable Grunt B-day, IWHBYD and Cowbell skulls, disable dropships, 2X Overshields, Grunt Bonus Round, Swapped out Armor Lock for Evade, Swapped out Drop Shield for Hologram, 5 second respawn, add Heretics)

Sniperfight (weapon pickup enabled, add: 150% Damage and Melee Modifier, 2 each grenade count, enable Grunt B-day, IWHBYD and Cowbell skulls, disable dropships, 2X Overshields, Grunt Bonus Round, Added Sprint back in and Hologram, 5 second respawn, add Heretics)

FRGFight (based on updated Rocketfight with Fuel Rod and Needler starts)

Plasmafight (based on updated Rocketfight with Plasma Launcher and Needle Rifle starts, and 4x Plasma grenades)

Sounds interesting.  Firefight is the mode I enjoy playing the most (although I ended up spending more time playing gruntpocalypse than anything else).  Just finally managed to make it to Lt. Colonel on Sunda though so I think I'm going to be taking a bit of a break from Halo for the forseeable future.  If only the map pack had included any new firefight maps or achievements.

I found getting the DLC achievements weren't that hard. Most of them you can get just by playing normally, you just have to make sure you play the right games (ie: Infected for the shotgun double kill). True, you can get them on any map but it's easier on a smaller one than say Hemorrhage. Like with a lot of achievements, once I stopped trying to just get them is when I usually ended up having them pop up. I'm with you though, I wish they had added more Firefight maps and I wish to god they'd take those annoying snipers off the ridge in Waterfront, I hate that level so much.

Holy crap yeah, the snipers on the ridge on Waterfront make me want to punch somebody.  And if you go up there it tells you to return to the battlefield.  There's a dude friggin' up there shooting me.  Seems like the battlefield to me.

Well, the new DLC will be coming out next month so I wanted to bump this up. Anyone still playing? I took a break the last 2-3 weeks as I wanted to finish up some other games before Dragon Age 2 came out but I'm gonna hop back in this until said game releases. They've added new Firefight modes called Arcade Firefight that was discussed above (at first they were temporary and went away but are now permanent). They've also added a bunch of new Score Attack modes that look interesting, like the one where you just choose your power but the weapons are totally random.

I still paly this quite a bit online. Don't know about spending another $10 on three maps. Not unitl they are in the regular rotation anyways.

I spammed the Arcade Firefight to get my diseased smoking armour.

Halo: Reach Title Update 1.1 is now live on Xbox.

Click the link for all the juicy info. It's really just some "behind the scenes" housekeeping. In a week and a half, the big update hits with new playlists (with physics and bloom similar to Halo: Combat Evolved). It's only 2MB - not big at all. Even though it appears that the 2011 Fall Gaming Tsunami has already hit me starting with Gears of War 3, I still enjoy Reach.

This is my first and only Xbox game to ever actually get 1000 achievement points. Once I hit that, I pretty much just quit playing. I might give the multiplayer another shot once Halo: CE Anniversary Edition comes out (since that will have the Reach multiplayer as well) but I think I'm pretty much done with Reach for now.
