2010 NCAA College Football Season

Thread Starter
Well, there's an NFL one, so why not college football?

New rules under discussion for the 2010 season:

* Stricter taunting rules - Could be a spot foul--if a player is flagged for taunting at the 20 and goes on to score, the score doesn't count and it goes to the 20. If it's in the end zone, it's pretty much like it is now--assessed on the XP, 2-pt conversion, etc.

* New concussion rules

From SI.com, the rest:

• Television monitors will be allowed in the press box coaches' booths beginning in 2011. The home team has responsibility for insuring that coaches' booths for both teams have identical television capability.

• Requiring players who wear "eye black" to use solid black with no words, logos, numbers or other symbols. That will be effective next season.

• Ending the requirement that players' pants always cover the knees.

• Eliminating the intentional "wedge" on kickoffs and punts, a rule the NFL adopted last season.

• Recommending conferences that do not have a pregame warm-up policy use a 10-yard, no-player zone between the 45-yard lines beginning 60 minutes before kickoff.

I shall now refer to the eye black rule as the "Tim Tebow Rule", thereby allowing him to remain in the minds of college football forever.

And to the taunting rule--I predict that's going to get really heated really quickly, especially when it comes to determining "the spot" of the foul. The first time it affects the outcome of a game, there's going to be a bunch of pissed off people.

Great, so we could have games decided on what a referee thinks is taunting or not. Does slowing down and strolling into the end zone constitute taunting? Does diving across the goal line a sommersault?

And I can't believe they won't allow school logos on the eye black.

I'm sure there's going to be some pissed off eye black manufacturers out there. I actually bought a set of FSU logo eye black for my son, and one of the kids on his team last year always had eye black with his numbers on them.
I'm ok with the eye black rule. I get so damn sick of kids calling out their retarded area codes, personal Jesus messages, or whatever. But you know what I want back....the Darth Vader all black facemask visors/screens. Those were awesome. Of course they're gone for good and it makes sense why, but I loved seeing them. Bad ass!

Renewed my FSU tickets last weekend. The Fisher area is on fire ladies and gents. Recruiting was awesome and season ticket sales and Booster contribs are up 200%. Jump on the FSU bandwagon folks before you get left behind! Ponder for Heisman!

And is too late to start rooting against Kiffin? I'm glad he's there as I now have a reason to watch those late night Pac-10 games and root for every other team to beat his ass.

USC meets the NCAA. Meeting is taking place today to discuss allegations with OJ Mayo and Reggie Bush. Only took 4 years.

Now it's Michigan vs. the NCAA. Allegations stemming from "too long/too many" practice/workout sessions. UM says they'll have an answer for the NCAA by the end of the summer. AD Brandon: "Rich Rodriguez is our football coach and will be our football coach next year."

USC is supposed to hear something from the NCAA in the next few weeks.

Someone went to the trouble of transcribing Mike Leach's tirades - I don't know whether or not he's nuts, but man I love him.

We thought we were too good to play Baylor. We thought we were too good. The mighty Red Raiders, oh yea, poo poo, fucking Baylor. Fuck you. And fuck me. And fuck everybody. That is fucking bullshit. And then we come out this year, after they rub our nose in the fact that we, they, that we're not too good to play with them and they do the same fucking thing this year. Because we don't fucking listen, and we can't pay attention to history, and we only half-ass fucking pay attention and listen! Because we want to tell everybody, yea at one time I was 11-2. Well that doesn't make you shit anymore! That doesn't make you shit. Oh but we're a young team, and then in the back of some of your minds, even though we don't talk about it, oh but we've been injured. Fuck that. Fuck. That. You know it's fucking bullshit, and I want that shit changed. I want that shit changed. As coaches we need to change it, as players we need to change it. We can't deal with success. As soon as we have a little bit of success, we think we're too fucking good. Ok, last year, we beat a team that's going to put, or last week we beat a team that's going to put a bunch of draft picks in the NFL. Yea we did, but that was last fucking week! That wasn't this week. That was last, fucking, week! That was last week. That wasn't this week. And so we're too good to play Baylor. Fuck us. That ain't true. You know, shit, what are our three goals, they beat us on all of them. Be a team. Be the most excited to play, be the best at doing your fucking job. They beat us on all three. They didn't win the game, but they beat us on all three. Now, as coaches, we're going to meet, and we're going to meet, and we're going to decide what we're going to do this next week, and I don't know what it's going to be; I haven't quite decided. But I'll tell you one fucking thing. We do not have the mentality and identity that we need to beat a team that we need to beat. And I'll tell you that there's a couple of you guys, uh, that your current living situation is going to change. You know, I was sitting there, you know, we've got several of you, uh, particularly on offense, that all you do is pull mediocrity out of one another.

Mike Bellotti is leaving the Oregon AD position for an ESPN job. Makes you wonder if there's something more coming on the horizon...

Hey! I'm talking to myself!

Apparently a UF receiver made some remark that concluded with saying that new UF QB John Brantley is a "real QB" as compared to Tim Tebow. I'm an FSU fan, but even I don't think the kid meant any kind of dis towards Tebow. However, a guy from the Orlando Sentinel (among other papers) wrote an article on the quote, and apparently Meyer didn't take kindly to it. That's not how you keep your stress level down, Urban. There's video of the confrontation on the link as well.

This is why I quit following Darnell Dockett on Twitter--after the whole Bowden thing ended, he made comments like "They ain't gettin' no more of my $$!" and "Who's this Fishin' guy? I don't know him!" Now that the Spring Game (which I'm going to) is upon us, his latest post: "Can't wait to go back to FSU tommorow, I'm excited as my First day 5yrs ago! To see my DL coach and all the new staff I might put my pads ON"

He's kind of a schmuck.
Dockett is full of shit. Always has been, always will be. The guy talks a good game about supporting FSU but he doesn't do dick when it comes to Boosters, fundraising or showing up for in person support.

Have fun at the Spring Game, I bet the atmosphere will be awesome this year.

Lots of big news right now:

* USC is barred from two years of post-season play, and will most likely vacate all 2004 wins, and the BCS may consider to revoke their title. Only took 6 years to figure all that out. The Kiffin Kurse kontinues.

* Oregon QB, who was already suspended the whole season for theft, is now booted off the team after being busted again for various minor atrocities.

* Apparently there's something going on with the Big XII conference...
Now we see why Pete Carroll ran to Seattle.

For the Big Ten fans out there, Michigan's top recruit failed to gain admission to the school so they released him from his letter of intent. It's a major controversy as giving someone who hasn't had the best life a world class education seemed to be the school's admission philosophy and, more importantly, we need a great safety and he is awesome.

Is Bush's Heisman affected by this? I heard something about them stripping him of it, but ESPN won't answer the damn question for me.
The Downtown Athletic Club can choose to strip him of it, but Vince Young (who came in second that year), has said he wouldn't accept the award if Bush was stripped.
So if Young doesn't take it, do they just pass it on down the line until someone does? Or would they just void the award completely for that year?

It's like Christmas in July here in Tennessee. Best news since the end of the Nashville flood. Everyone has an extra spring in their step this morning.

One thought: How old is Monte Kiffin going to be at the end of this suspension?

They're also taking away 20 scholarships, which hurts their recruiting. This means Kiffin and Orgeron will have to rely on their weakness: Coaching.

I'm torn on this. On the one hand, Bush was obviously benefited from actions that were in violation of NCAA rules, and there were probably players instrumental to his success that might not have been at USC if not for these shenanigans. On the other, did those benefits make him the best player in the country that year? Having cash in his pocket and a free house didn't make him a great running back.

There's no way in hell admissions would railroad Dorsey if not for the recent infractions squabble. The academic progress rate for 2010 for just the football program is barely above passing, so it's not like admissions can really fall back on their precious philosophy for support here, which, like you said, misses the forest for the trees anyway. And speaking of philosophy, if he meets basic standards, and he does, isn't it better to get him in to, you know, better his future? Dorsey says he hasn't burned any bridges with the school, but once he reopens recruiting I can't imagine UM ever getting another bite at the apple. He signed a juco letter of intent as a fallback, but I just can't see him waiting around another year for the "privilege" (as admissions would call it) to play at UM.

I really hate my alma mater sometimes.

Dorsey's dad mentioned he'd like to take a look at FSU (again), and Louisville (assuming because Charlie Strong is now there). I'm 99.9% sure FSU won't take him. Fisher has been trying to avoid potential academic problem kids, if not problem kids in general. I believe I read a few months back that his classes have had no kids that have missed admission due to academics, and the most recent influx had the highest GPA that a new class has had in a long time, if not ever.

The NCAA is a joke.
I think 2 years suspension from Bowl games is too excessive, especially since this is just a case of a player taking money from some potential agent, and it didn't help USC recruit athletes at all. Hopefully there will be an appeal and the suspension is reduced to 1 year.

The problem for USC is, they already have admitted that a basketball player got money/gifts and implemented their own punishment for that, and 2 other football players have been nailed in the same timeframe for accepting money/gifts. They'll be lucky if they don't get the "repeat offender" tag for Mayo then Bush. The reason they probably won't is because the NCAA is investigating both at the same time.

Also just occurred to me...how pissed are Auburn fans right now? Auburn got shut out of the national championship game in 2004 even though they finished the season undefeated as well, and USC went on to pound OU in the game to win the MNC.

FSU isn't interested.

Now, let's have a laugh:

AAU used to be an impact player in athletics and now it's regulated to whatever it's become. Bilas thinks the same could happen with the NCAA. That's what they need to realize. The schools don't need the NCAA. The NCAA needs the schools.

Well I caved in and bought Opening Game tickets to UNC vs LSU in Atlanta. My Dad is an LSU alum and I went to UNC so I figure it will be a grand family event.

Let's see how the Tigers handle the #1 ranked defense preseason.

You should swing down to the Marriott Marquis afterwards and check out the Dragon*Con crowd. Our friends did that last year after the Alabama/Va. Tech game, and we hung out until almost 3 AM. Don't need a pass to get into the Marquis lobby, and there are a ton of people that hang out there. We stay at the Marquis every year.

USC player Malik Jackson transferred to UT. Not a huge deal, until I read this on sportswriter Bruce Feldman's Twitter account a few minutes ago:

Quote:
“Weeks ago, Vols faxed over a list of every JR & SR on USC’s roster to the Trojans’ compliance office to alert them of their recruiting plan.”
So basically, the primary recruiting goal of UT currently is to screw Lane Kiffin. This is the kind of spite I can get behind.

That's hilarious.
UT was given the chance to play USC next year and they backed out

So it makes their spite look a little more than silly.

I'm sure Kiffin is really hurt... having the easiest job in college football and alot of fucking cash.
"Easiest job in college football?" Maybe before the sanctions.
Because of the sanctions, the program isn't going anywhere for close to a decade, anyway. He gets a pass for at least the next 5 years. He certainly can't be blamed for any of the infractions or players flying coop. Derek Dooley has a MUCH tougher job at Tennessee.

He has enough talent on his staff to win some games and it will be much easier in the PAC 10/12.

It's basically a waiting game.

Couple of NCAA investigations going on:

* Several players from UNC, including perhaps the best DT in the ACC, Marvin Austin, are being investigated for taking benefits, trips, etc., from agents. Word is Austin may even be suspended for all of 2010 (his senior year). Also he and a TE from USC (South Carolina) have been told to stop talking to each other, as apparently they've been talking about which agent is giving them the "best" deal.

* Rumor is that Maurkice Pouncey took money from an agent prior to UF's bowl game.
That Pouncey thing doesn't surprise me. It was sort of odd that he would come out and his brother wouldn't.. they've essentially done everything together all throughout UF. He probably figured he had to once he took money.

several means 2 players. Austin and Little. If they get suspended, UNC will probably go down the toilet even with the #1 defense in the NCAA.

Regardless I'm still going to have a blast at the game.

I'm starting to consider this thread a form of masturbation, since I've had the last 3 posts. Anyway, Fisher sent a bit of a message to the team--Jarmon Fortson, FSU's #2 WR this year, has been kicked off the team for "violating team rules". I'm sure what actually happened will come out eventually, but that was a major surprise. He's a guy with a ton of potential that made these crazy catches, but would drop something right in his hands.

NFL football tonight, and less than one month to college football. Woo hoo!
