2010 NCAA College Football Season - Page 12

Goofing around with university landmarks in ways that don't cause any real damage and are done in good fun is one thing.  At my alma mater (NC State), the kids from Carolina would come on campus before we played them and paint our Free Expression Tunnel Carolina blue.  But this is wrong.  Having said that, with the way that some folks on ESPN were carrying on today, you'd think that the guy murdered Cam Newton.

Any volunteers to coach Ohio State's first two games in 2011?  Anyone ready to borrow the sweater vest for a couple of weeks?

I'll do it, the stadium's across the street from my office--no commute.

Tressel screwed up, arguably because he was trying to protect his players. He didn't do something like major recruiting violations. Still, he screwed up and he'll take his licks.

All I know is he should bill those players that were caught up in a federal drug trafficking investigation for his fine and loss of those two games' income. Idiots.

So we have five major players suspended for several games next year, and the coach for two. Who wants to bet the NCAA ups the penalty on Tressel to try to even things out for the rest of  the Big Ten(eleven....er...twelve)?

It won't matter. Tress will be back before the Big Ten season, and so will the players. They'll have chips on their shoulders and have major stuff to prove. I see pain for the rest of conference.

Heavy hangs the head that bears the sweater vest.

Until THE OSU's schlorships are reduced and cripples the program for a few years.  I'm sure Tressel's sole intention was to protect the players; I'm sure it had nothing to do with winning football games... Guessing from that charade of a press conference, he's only upset that his e-mails were read.

If the NCAA isn't crippling schools like USC and those involved in the Cam Newton Fire Sale, they're not going to pull the trigger on Tress.

Over the last few days as more details have come out about this, the more it stinks. But it's still not on the same level as paying Reggie Bush's mortgage or putting a quarter of a million bucks into Papa Newton's pocket.

Still, I expect last year's wins to be vacated. I considered it a lackluster year anyway despite the great record. Given the hype, the Bucks should have been more impressive. Tressel's appeal around here was his image as a father figure building men of character. That's been tarnished forever. Only his record against Michigan kept him from losing his job.

As someone told me this week, "Hey, Urban Meyer's available....."

That.  As a Michigan alum the part that really pissed me off about the pres conference was Gee's "I hope he doesn't fire me" line.  The entire attitude of aww, schucks you caught us and lack of remorse was disheartening.  While I think the NCAA will up the penalty to 5 games for Tressel, one of these times the NCAA is going to have to throw the book at someone just to prove a point.

That's what I'm still trying to understand--players are being penalized a substantial number of games, and now the coach is being penalized (at least) 2 games.  But the attitude I've gotten from OSU has been, "Oops!  Sorry!"  Even the players themselves seemed more pissed than apologetic about it.

Has Reggie Bush ever actually admitted to what USC got dinged for?  He blasted the decisions, the NCAA, et al., but I still don't think he ever really apologized specifically for what happened.  I think he said he was sorry to the AD for "mistakes he made", but seems to have taken the OJ method as far as apologizing for the direct actions.  "I am sorry for killing...uh, I mean, for your loss of your family that was killed.  By someone that was not me.  Probably."

The NCAA could make an example of Tressel, and you have to believe that there's going to be more serious punishment other than vacated wins and sitting out the Akron, Toledo games.

Especially when there's such media fervor over college football and its coahes getting out of hand.

If Tressel coached for an scrub school sure.  But Ohio St. is a top 10 football school(except against SEC) and they won't touch him.  Didn't Cam Newton and the Ohio St football players teach us anything?

If Tressel was coaching Akron, no one would give a shit about this story.

Yes.  Ohio State is a larger university with a (theoretically) more prestigious athletic department playing in a major Division I conference.  What's your point?

Ummmm.....

Speaking as an OSU alum and current staff member, this whole situation stinks to high heaven. If the stuff in the SI article is true, we need to kick quite a number of student-athletes off into oblivion. Pryor will never take another snap at OSU, and he knows it. That's why he drove a new sports car to the team meeting/announcement yesterday.

This is going to be a great time for people to kick the Buckeyes, but make 'em count. This won't last forever. Buckeye Nation won't tolerate another John Cooper with a 2-10-1 record vs Michigan. This interim coach has a year long tryout, I hope he does well. If not, expect Urban Meyer to be getting a rather expensive contact come December.

Meyer's official statement: "I am committed to ESPN and will not pursue any coaching opportunities this fall."  So get ready for 2012, Buckeye fans.

My bro-in-law, who worked at the hospital where Meyer's dad was a few years ago, is a huge OSU fan and also took pictures for their athletic department for a few years, may shoot himself if/when Meyer take over OSU.  He ran into Meyer a few times in the hallway at the hospital, and said the only time he ever talked to anyone was when he was complaining about the service in the hospital.  He also signed a bunch of pictures of himself and left them in the break room along with a bunch of signed Tim Tebow pics for the "fans".  My bro-in-law said he was tempted to take a Meyer or Tebow picture and send it to me.  I told him I would have wiped my ass with it and sent it back to him.

Am I wrong to want to thoroughly scrub and cleanse the Buckeye program of all the scurllious buffoons implicated in this terrible mess? I thought players were already tested for drugs, but clearly they need to be test for stupidity as well. Sure, all the top schools do it....so I want them caught and cleansed as well. I thought I was going to have to write off the next year for the Bucks, but clearly this debacle is going to last many years. There's going to be the NCAA penalties, of course, but now many years to recover from that and the stain of this ugly mess?

And if I have to hear Pryor's high school football coach lecturing us over the radio about how quickly we turned on Pryor....grrrr....

Seriously, the guy is driving a sports car (the latest one of eight he's had here in Columbus in three years) with a freakin' suspeneded license with the media following him around. The guy has million dollar talent and a ten cent head.

Not according to Herbstreit who, on Monday night's Sports Center, predicted that the Bucks will surprise everyone by running the table on their schedule this season.  And, although it was telephone interview, I'm fairly positive he said it with a straight face.

Now I get to listen to idiot Husker fans wring their hands for a year on the sheer possibility that Bo Pelini may leave Nebraska for Ohio St.....despite the fact that pelini hasn't even won a Big 12 championship yet, hasn't even contended for a National Championship yet, and has yet to beat OU or Tex. Hell, I'm not even sure if Ohio State has any interest in him WHATSOEVER, but that hasn't stopped Husker fans from putting it in the sports page everyday since monday. And don't let me forget to mention that this is the same guy they wanted to crucify after TV cameras caught him screaming in the face of Taylor Martinez during the Texas A&M game last year............even though it was because Martinez got caught calling his dad to talk about transferring DURING HALFTIME.

I love Husker fans.....they live in their own little world, it's hilarious. I hope Ohio State DOES talk to Pelini just so I can watch my co-workers hyper-ventilate during lunch.

In regards to USC vacating the 2004 title, can someone please tell me if the players have to return their rings?  I keep waiting for ESPN to tell me this, but I haven't heard it yet.

If they were Buckeyes, they would have sold their rings by now anyway..... :/

POV from an FSU fan: Herbstreit also said Chris Rix would win the Heisman (which I completely LOL'd at when he said it--to coin a phrase used earlier, million dollar skills with a 10-cent brain).

I wish I could predict the lottery with this kind of prescience.....
