They'll be the Jamaica from the '88 Olympics of this year.

Yep. He's a Class A Weenie. He looks like the kid who got beat up in school every day and now he's the Prime Minister of a country and he's acting tough. Obama sent Biden who is still massively way more cooler then Harper.

The whale thing was pretty neat.

EDIT: Now we're rocking! Fiddling has never looked so bad ass!

Ok... WOW. I just turned on the Olympics for the first time in my life and it was pretty much the craziest sporting event I've ever seen. It was the story of how people first came to north america over the ice bridge, and it was all set to music with like, holograms and ice skating and a giant polar bear made of stars and it was all narated by Donald Sutherland. It was pretty awesome, what with the northern lights and holographic whales and the fish that flew up into the aurora borealis and then became totem poles that turned into trees

The commentator was saying how the Chinese had spent more money on their Olympics, but I think it would be hard to top the mind bending display I just witnessed

I'm impressed so far!
There's a storm a' brewin'..

EDIT: Impressive spectacle, with the rockies there

EDIT: Hover skiing better be an actual event , or I'm going to be pissed!

EDIT: With the traffic lights, it's like Koyaanisqatzi on Ice

EDIT: I want them to bring back the polar bear... he'd better make a reappearence at some point.

EDIT: The way he's talking up this torch lighting, it does sound pretty fucking magical. I'm pumped!

EDIT: For crying out loud, I haven't heard this much french since Apocalypse Now Redux.

To paraphrase doctor Ian Malcome, "There are going to be some, uh, sporting events -- at some point -- on your, uh, sporting event television program, right?"

Trudat. I sometimes forget what sort of pipes she has.
Oh man, he screwed up pronunciation of the name of the person they're having the minute of silence for...

That's not what people should have spent that minute thinking about. That's too bad, it kind of bums me out.

Who was that person, what happened to him? Is he the one who died in the training accident?
Overall, this opening ceremonies have been filled with the sort of overproduced, pointless, ridiculously overblown shit I abhor in modern-day society.

But since it's the Canucks doing it, it's semi-acceptable.
Moment of silence for Nodar Kumaritashvili. Just watched the vid. Unbelievable; not so much his death but just the comment on the precariousness of human existence - this guy went from a top athlete on the biggest stage, moving at a ridicuous rate of speed, to...stopped. In all senses of the word.
Gretzky is either bored or tremendously emotional.

EDIT - perhaps embarrassed?
Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated, we are experiencing technical difficulties with our opening ceremonies.

Torch mishap!

LULZ!!

The whole show went flawlessly until when it mattered.

Oh dear God.
I have to say those torches have a cool futuristic look to them. They look like items from MASS EFFECT 2 or something

Little hiccup, it all ended well.

No one will remember after a few Molsons - "sure it got a little pear shaped at torch time, but what about them whales, eh?"

The whales were bitchin

Biden coming across as a pretty swell guy in this interview.

Ah, like I said....projections whales > kd lang singing "Hallelujah" > fiddlin Wolverine > failed torch ramp.
It's not just that, it's the fact that they then have to drive Gretzky for 15 minutes through pouring rain to the external torch.

Kind of sums up Canada, really: technical fuckups, poor organization, everyone having a good time regardless.

It's that Scots heritage shining through - "your house just burned down!" "ah, but the whiskey was in the garage! SHOTS!"
God damn. CTV News just showed a better qaulity video of that lugers crash. It's insane. His body flies so fast and then just stops.

They drove Gretzky because of protesters.
The whales were great, Georgia's team entering to that beautiful ovation got me teary-eyed, but the mechanical fail on the indoor phallic cauldron was a laugh riot. Gretzky's WTF face was hilarious.

It was pretty cool that the people were running next to his car and not getting shoved away by security, but I suppose any person who would dare to harm Gretzky would be a marked man/woman in Canada.

How high quality video do you need? I got the "70 mph* to 0 mph" equation pretty well from the get-go.

* - conservative estimate
I was kinda hoping all the music was going to stop before the "cauldron" came up and was lit and this came on:

Win: First nations, Inuit, and Metis dancing for hours straight. Whales. The Great One. Georgian athletes showing courage, grace, and tact. Poetry Slam guy. Warm applause for American contingent. All nations with 3 or fewer participants (especially India with a grand total of 3 out of a pool of 1.1 billion). Levitating Coca-Cola bear. Nelly Furtado's ass (it must be repeated).

Fail: The cauldron.

144 km/h == 90 mph

There're places on the CTV website where you can see a close-up of the impact -- looks like he hit back-of-neck first.

That was the highlight for me -- can't get enough of her voice plus the Cohen song fit perfectly.

Anyone else a little disappointed that Cronenberg wasn't one of the flag-bearers?

The entrance of the Georgian team was brutal.

You were not the only one, sir.

I can't wait to see this opening ceremony complete with gaffes, I just got back from work which overlooks the Olympic village, so I've seen plenty of the athletes milling around already.

I even managed to buy tickets to an event (Cross country skiing) on the last day of the games without forfeiting an arm and a leg to the ridiculous prices the VANOC committee is willing to let fans swap tickets on their site. Speed skating tickets originally $95 are being hocked for $648 on the olympic website. The markup is absurd.

I was kind of hoping for Shatner myself.

At first, I thought maybe the fourth column not going up was sort of a "missing man" tribute to the luger, but all the torch bearers had that "Oh crap, keep smiling" thing going on.

Donald Sutherland's father-in-law is one of the most famous and popular Canadian individuals in Canada's history. T.C. (Tommy) Douglas, who was the premier of Saskatchewan, brought universal health care to Canada.

Shitty weather is screwing up the skiing. It's dissappointing, but it DOES appear to be helping Lindsay Vonn with her injury.

If you're curious about WHEN a particular sport is taking place, go to www.nbcolympics.com. Go under TV listings, plug in your channel, and they'll show you what events are being aired. You can also plug in a particular sport and plan ahead on your viewing. Pretty slick, actually.

Short Track tonight!

I was literally just going to ask that. Is it going to be in prime time again tonight? Because I was going to watch DOG SOLDIERS for the first time (what with it being WWW* at CHUD), but after that I'd totally be down for watching some ski stuff.

Kate: For Central Time, Short Track is scheduled for prime time tonight (7pm-10:30pm).

In general, it looks like 'the norm' for these Olympics (at least for my time zone and NBC channel) will be:
- afternoon coverage from 1pm-5pm
- prime time coverage from 7pm-10:30pm
- late night coverage from 11pm-12am

There's also going to be a 'prime time replay' every night from 12am until 3 or 4 am.

Ah ok. I see. So for the East Coast I'd add an hour to each of those, I'm assuming? Good to know. I have work till 5 or so today but then I'll check it out. Thanks a bunch for the info*

*and not just for me, I think it's good info to have on hand right on the thread

Skiing is probably one of the most expensive sports you can get into. Actually, most of the winter sports involve quite a bit of investment to participate. It's not like track, where all you need is some flat space and two good legs. It's most likely economics that keep India from having a large winter contingent.

I know. Believe me, I know.. I'm just saying that if your nation's pride is at stake, you think you'd be able to scrounge up more people for winter time fun than just three per billion

As for the cost of skiing, I just started going again this year. I took a two year break because of how much the stupid lift tickets are. I love skiing and own my own skis, but it's still hella expensive.

EDIT: I guess what I mean to say is that skiing is expensive for an individual. It's no so expensive that a nation could only afford to train three skiiers. I mean, they have the tallest mountains in the world to practice on.

Regarding India's winter olympians, I'd think it's a function of cultural import as much as anything. India's in a warm enough clime that winter sports aren't likely to be on the radar of the common citizen much. Out of sight, out of mind, and out of budget. Not that I'd know all that much about the socio-political climate in India as it pertains to sports, but but national priorities tend to reflect the priorities of the populace at large.

She should be! That's cool. Your mom's cousin has probably now been seen by more people than your mom will ever meet in her lifetime.

My cousin went to the Oh-Eight Olympics, BTW

Reasonable enough conjecture. But I do wonder about that "culural import" aspect. They got cricket and mustaches and all that other stuff from the Brits. It's a shame skiing never crossed over.
Umm we (Indians) got those Himalayans pretty close buy. As you could also see with a lot of other countries, just because they represent the country doesn't mean they train there.
