Phil Appreciation Thread

Thread Starter
I wanted to take a minute to bow in the direction of Phil. When Phil first started posting here he and I butted heads a number of times; usually I'm a better judge of character, but somehow I misjudged him completely. He's not just one of the smartest, best informed posters here, he's really funny and is one of the biggest supporters of real movie discussion. I've since met Phil in real life and can attest that he's even better in the real world.

Show your appreciation of Phil in this thread.

A QUICK NOTE: Please don't start up 600 imitation Appreciation Threads. Do me a favor and let me create a couple over the next few weeks to highlight great posters who contribute in big ways to the real point of the CHUD message boards, movie discussion. I'm going to ask Eileen to close other Appreciation Threads that get made. Thanks for understanding.

Uncle Phil is always fun. Specially off the boards.
Phil's great.

Phil a G.
I get chills when quoted by Phil!

I've tried to keep my infrequent posting away from posting about posting or posters, but I'll jump in here and add that I know when I come across one of Phil's posts, in almost any context, I won't be wasting my time. He brings some great good stuff.

Smart, friendly poster and when I see his name on a thread, I always check it out. One of the people here I wouldn't mind getting a beer with. And then we could get an apartment together.

I...I've said too much.

Phil is funny and always very diplomatic'. He's the one of the 20 posters that I recognize beyond his avatar.
Phil has always been a class act. Thanks for always being so helpful to me, especially in the PMs that we've exchanged.
I've never met Phil, but I'd be lucky to do so. I don't think I've learned as much from a poster so easily as from Phil.

He's also one of the kindest posters. I really do like Phil.
I like his William Devane icon. I will forever associate Phil as looking like William Devane.

But yeah - Phil is the kind of poster to emulate.

Did I ever tell you about the time Phil took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can't find one. Finally Phil takes me to a vacant lot and says, "Here we are." We sat there for a year and a half and sure enough someone constructs a bar around us. The day they opened we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burned the place to the ground. Phil yelled over the roar of the flames, "Always leave things the way you found em!"
I dig Phil a lot. More people, myself included, should have the insight Mr. Nobile has on these boards.

Yeah, Phil is the shit. Remember when everyone was fantasy casting for WATCHMEN and he picked Jackie Earle Haley for Rorschach long before the movie even started casting? Beyond impressive stuff, right there. Great film insight, especially about B 70's shit and movies in general.
Man knows his stuff, and is always worth reading.
If I ever need someone to help me take out the Texan and Automatic Slim, Phil's my main damie.

Absolutely. It's so appropriate Devin would kick off a series of appreciation threads with one about Phil. Dude is great and I hope to be more like him someday.
I hope Phil's middle name is 'Awesome', because he deserves it to be. He makes great, informed posts and encourages discussion, and he's one of the posters who, when I see he's posted in a thread, makes me click on it.
Phil changed my life!

Seriously, he's a Great poster.
He's been one of my favorite posters around here since he was still going by 70sCinema. Just a great guy who actually causes me to reevaluate my stances on specific films and film appreciation with just a simple well reasoned comment or two.

I do! Then I remember Devin bragging about whispering the idea into Snyder's ear and taking all the credit for it. Good times.

I too have met this prolific man of the people when he was gracious enough to visit my table at a low rent indie comic con in the desolate wastelands of Philadelphia. He is a CHUD patriot, through and through. Despite my many overtures to register at the TFL boards, he will not betray this site.

Oh and he knows a lot of cool shit about every obscure movie ever made.

Phil's great. Love his various takes on film.
Phil's awesome.
A few years ago, I used to just lurk. But part of what convinced me to actually join were the great posts by Phil, along with ton of other folks.
Good to have him here.
Phil may be great and all, but the reason he's getting an "Appreciation Thread" right this minute is because he kissed Devin's ass really good in the "redneckjoe" thread.

Masterfully done, Phil. Boys and girls, that is how you get ahead in life.

Fuck off, diggity. This is an appreciation thread. Don't shit it up.

Go die in a fire. Please.

Yeah, Phil's awesome. His threads are always enlightening and interesting, even if some of them die quick, sad deaths.

Poor Phil's appreciation thread...
BUSTER! You can't do that on the balcony, buddy?
Yeah, should have ignored him. Sorry.
As much as I tend to talk about other things besides movies here, I usually avoid participating in the threads that are about the message boards, even when they're positive. But making an appreciation thread about Phil serves a really good purpose. Although there are other types of posters who are a valuable part of a message board, Phil is the kind most should be like. He knows his subject, is informative, and seems nice. Solid and without frills. The Robert Duvall of chewers.
Phil is one of the best curmudgeonly old, power drinking horror pro's posting in the Creature Corner forums. My favorite quote of his regarding the mention of Whedon in a thread about a Re-Animator television series:

There was a huge gap before Phil.
Nothing wrong with throwing some appreciation out. Completely warranted for a fellow like Phil. He's made me chortle like a stunted pokemon more than a few times.

And shares all of the cool stuff he finds around the web. I so appreciate some of the links he's sent me to items that he knows i'd get a kick out of. Plus he owns some of the greatest geeky movie inspired collectibles including ones that I foolishly threw away as I got older and would kill to still own. It's been said before by others but does anyone cause you to hurry to ebay the way Phil can?
I would actually love to see a weekly column from Phil on random movie shit.
Phil is the finder of cool shit in everything. Plus, he's the only Chewer that impresses me on a consistent basis.

I don't know, I'm thinking more Jeff Bridges. Really knows his shit, pretty laid-back, can count on him to bring some quality.
I'm thinking Gene Hackman, because he's good in anything. However, he'll always be William Devane, all the way.
Good work, y'all, you've managed to start fancasting for a forum poster.
Phil is good people, for all the reasons already stated. He's also one of the best drunk posters on the boards.

I kind of miss the exclamation point. If I ever switch to my real name I'm totally using one. In honor of Phil.

Movie related discussion!
I started out butting heads with Phil too. We exchangd PMs and its all good since. I respect his posts a hell of a lot, though we often do not necessarily agree. That's the best thing you can say about a poster, in my opinion - that you don't agree with them but enjoy their posts more than many of those that you do agree with.
I didn't know there was all this HEAD BUTTING during Phil's early days.
I guess he has since traded in his camaro and hung up his rebel badboy leather jacket.
My favorite thing about Phil is that never does he try to be/write/act like someone he's not. His stuff is funny and insightful, for sure, but more importantly it comes without affectation. That's becoming an increasingly rare and valuable commodity around these parts.
The way he posts, it sounds like he'd sound like a Phil. If that makes any sense.
Almost comically timed to be one of the weirder threads to come back from a lunch hour to...

Thanks everyone
