Phil Appreciation Thread - Page 2

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of Phil.
Wow. I was just watching Caddyshack and all I can think about is the caddy scholarship scene after the fight and the whole "Go see Judge Smails.' 'And kiss his ass." exchange.

That aside, Phil is the shiznit.
Speaking as a total nobody around this place, every few days i'll click on the "Find all posts by Phil" to catch up on what he's been talking about, as it's likely to be worthwhile. Or at least funny and sharp. The best kind of "Movie Geek".
He Phils the hole in all of our shriveled, prune-like hearts.
Phil 'er up!
Had your Phil?

Yeah, I'll stop there. Phil's great.
I'm REALLY glad the ass-kissing in the redneckjoe thread worked out so well. Aim for the stars, people.

Here's some more for you:

Devin - very kind words, but I'm fairly sure I was pretty shitty with you at first (think I called you a "profoundly unhappy person" during one regrettable drunk exchange). Frankly, all that happened was I got better at posting and you stopped wanting to ban me. Funny how that works, eh kids?
I dig ya Phil.

I don't normally do these kinds of threads, but I like these boards, and I like most of the chewers here.
I fucked 'im.

"I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!"

This was probably about eight months ago, I was feeling pretty blah about my love of movies. I didn't hate the art form or anything, but I was having a really hard time being able to watch anything/stay engaged/generally get excited about it. Phil's one of the few people on the boards who seem to have a pretty comprehensive film knowledge (I would put Devin, Dre, and the late great Tony Ryan in that category), so I asked him for some advice. Not only did he take the time to write back, but he also gave me some pretty good advice -- mainly, that he didn't know, but it was okay to have ebbs and flows in your enthusiasm for film, and that it was okay to take a step back and not to worry about it. I've kept that in mind.

Phil is also one of those guys who understands that if you love film, you should try to see everything. I've been around the boards for a while, and there have always been guys who serve as a model, something to aspire to for the guys who love movies but have wide gaps in their knowledge, or who are just starting out in exploring film, or are coming back to it after a long period in the wilderness (like I currently am). Phil's one of those guys, and the boards would be a lesser place without him.

One of my favorite nuggets of Phil (besides his balls in my mouth) is:

"If you like/dismiss something purely based on genre, you are my enemy."
Phil's a great guy. He introduced me to THIS. How can I ever repay him? Also, if you are Facebook friends with Phil and you come across something he posted that says "Sweet dreams." Don't click unless you are into weird unicorn furry porn.

But yeah, when it comes to movies Phil is the goods.
Phil is a wonderful human being. You can just tell. I would crawl over broken glass for this man.

He is the best poster in this forum's history, rivalled only by thefaint268, who once started a thread called "grilling is it you", a thread whose intial post contained only the sentence "what is your favorite thing to grill".
I grill many things.
Yes. Phil is great on the boards and most likely a wonderful human being. So much so I was compelled to be friends with him on Facebook. Its always nice when smart posters don't have any of the snobbery that comes with being all smart an' shit.

Don't click that even if you are into unicorn furry porn.
Phil is one of my favorite posters.
I always wanna kill myself if I can't please Phil. A thread couldn't be started for a better poster.
So many posters who should be ignored get so much attention it's awesome to get a chance to fling some love at Phil. One of the best.
phil cured my cancer. Thanks Phil
Finally, some true-blue positivity on the boards!

Phil is da man. He'd make a great writer on the CHUD team. Always enjoy reading his opinions and posts. He doesn't come off like he's trying too hard, and is just being himself, which is a pretty rare thing nowadays in the age of "I'll do anything to get attention on the internet, including embarrassing myself in every possible way".
Phil taught me the magic of ROLLING THUNDER. Thanks, Phil.
Phil has his will written on his cock but his lawyer said it will not stand up in court. And I'm glad to see Jake is here today. Now at least I know my hubcaps are safe.

Phil's one of the few around here who makes me want to be a better poster. I trust to his take on things (notably in the zombie arena) and he's not frightened by nostalgia and sentimentality.

Seriously, how can I not love a guy who has the same god damned PLANET OF THE APES garbage can as I do?

Be that as it may, and I doubt that it was, let me wrap up by saying that someday I'll crack his TITANIC nut. If I can get his birthday, I'll mail him the damn thing as a gift - as I don't see myself as being able to arrange sending Jessica Biel's finger for his anus!.

Phil...you will be missed.
Yep - been one of my favorite blokes here for a long time. Always worth reading without fail, and a top guy to boot.

I charge my glass to you sir.

To be fair, Phil fantasy casts Jackie Earle Haley in everything. EVERYTHING.

Favorite Phil / Keith Hallmark moment: He sent me Rolling Thunder on DVD. I had not seen it for several years, now I can't stop watching it. He did this without asking for payment of any kind. He was just happy to share the wealth. A year and so later, I did send him a widescreen copy of JOHNNY HANDSOME, just because I never forgot. Has anybody used the word mensch yet?

I am fairly envious of Phil (and others like him) regarding his seemingly undying passion regarding ALL film. I don't turn the envy into bitterness, often I am inspired to watch something new, to fight through the burnout. I'm babbling.

To smuggle in some other appreciation, I want it to be publicly known that Moltisanti once sent me a brand spanking unopened package DVD of the Brian Bosworth classic STONE COLD. He had an extra copy and knew I wanted it. He also asked for nothing in return, or actually something about doing a favor in the future ala Stingray, I don't remember the specifics. So also a mensch.

Count me in as another big fan of Phil's. The man is doin' fine and cherry wine. No matter how shitty a thread gets, he always cruises by, like Dean Martin with a drink in his hand, and says what's exactly needed in as few words as possible.

If I'm not mistaken, he's the first Chewer to inspire me to posterize him (Myers, Fleed and Fabfunk don't count) in the My Fan Made Movie Posters thread...

Phil? Fuck him!

Kidding. Phil, you complete me.
Couldn't have picked a better person to start a appreciation thread for. Guy knows his stuff and has great taste. If he recommends it I'll watch it. Easily the poster more of us should aspire to be like.
That Devane poster makes me guffaw.
Just adding to the goodness. Phil manages to be informed, funny and productive without being an asshole or territorial. In other words, a great poster and without doubt someone who makes the CHUD boards a better place.

Glad you're here. You're one of the posters that have taught me a lot about film.
(raises whiskey glass)

Phil.
When this guy shows up in the B Action thread, he rules, and he's one of the most iconic posters around her.

He is also the only person to successfully kill someone with a Nintendo Power Glove that he made a gun and trigger motion with.
I haven't posted much lately, but this is certainly a time when I need to do so.

Phil rocks.
Late to the party, very unfashionably so. But still - Phil's a damn good guy. Definitely deserving of such a thread.
C'mon people, let's see if we can get this to 10 pages, let's make the party last all night.
This guy...this guy right here...this is the guy.

I am a Philfan.
Phil is a terrific poster. He always has something interesting and intelligent to say. And he's often quite funny while doing it.

We may not have very constant communication, but I always enjoy reading his posts. I really respect the guy.
The best guy.

Can't be said enough, total class act.
I'd buy him a beer.

And I hope his last name's McKracken. Then I'd buy him a beer and a shot.
Haven't been around long enough to really talk with any authority, but yeah, Phil always has thoughtful and interesting things to say, more often than not about movies that very few people have seen. Props.
So THIS is where you fuckers are when you're not posting about film!!!!

In other news, I too like Phil.
Can't say much else that hasn't already been said other than Phil is a class act all the way.
Phil's great. And he loves Monte Hellman.
If Phil really isn't William Devane, I don't want to know.
He's good people.

He makes me wanna...

When that guy Phil Owen was writing for the site for a while I had no idea he was a different Phil than the one this thread is appreciating. His articles received so much venom from people on the comments and boards, I couldn't figure out how so many people would hate a guy who was so nice and learned in the movie realm. Coincidentally, Phil is exactly the kind of poster who probably never had a negative to say about Phil Owen.

You rule, Phil.

Whatever happened to Phil Owen, BTW? Does anyone know? I literally just now realized he hasn't written anything on the site in a while

He's still around on the Facebook and Live. Do you have Live, Kate? Phil Prime doesn't, but that's because he's too busy discovering one-sheet posters that are worth more than my car.
Three things, Phil. If I ever get to have binge problems, I hope to discuss them with you over a fine, fine brand. Second, we seriously need to discuss Salma Hayeks breasts more often and third, kudos to you for being such an interesting, neat and thoughtful chewer. You're a fine contributor to this internet thing and always welcome.
