Continuing on my Haneke odyssey......
Another fascinating piece of work, and more proof that Haneke is a brilliant actors director. Binoche is superb, particularly in the audition scene and during the argument in the supermarket.
The film looks at not just issues surrounding communication, or rather the difficulty of it in a meaningful way inthe modern world, but also intervention- when is it OK to step in, when should we leave things alone? This is bought up on a number of levels, from the suspected problems in the family above Binoche's, to humiliating the beggar, to the scene on the train, to Kosovo.
It also includes Haneke's regular concern with reality and cinematic reality, and how the audience reacts to these- the previously mentioned audition scene is played and shot in a way that works fantastically.
The film doesn't work for me as well as The Piano Teacher or Hidden, although it was still a thoroughly rewarding watch. Anyone else seen this?
