THOR Pre-Release Discussion

Well, this sucker's already more than a month into shooting and all the important roles have been cast so I figure a Pre-Release Thread where everyone can chip in and talk about the flick should come in handy.

To run down just what we're dealing with:

Thor

Release date: May 6, 2011

Director: Kenneth Branagh

Cast:

Chris Hemsworth as... Thor
Natalie Portman as... Dr. Jane Foster
Tom Hiddleston as... Loki
Anthony Hopkins as... Odin
Joshua Dallas as... Fandral
Ray Stevenson as... Volstagg
Tadanobu Asano as... Hogun
Jaimie Alexander as... Sif
Idris Elba as... Heimdall
Rene Russo as... Frigga
Stellan SkarsgÄrd as... Prof. Andrew Ford
Kat Dennings as... Darcy, assistant to Dr. Foster
Samuel L. Jackson as... Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Clark Gregg as... S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson

And finally, Colm Feore as... uhhh, somebody.

Anyways, there we go! Quite an eclectic cast, I must say! Even without Brian Blessed, I think what we got is still more than interesting enough.

Plot-wise, there's been hints and rumors around, but it seems the gist of the movie will be that Thor gets cast out of Asgard by his father Odin for being selfish and an all-around asshole. While on Earth, he meets up with Portman's Foster and I assume comes to realize the error of his ways, just in time to fight back against his half-brother Loki's evil machinations.

There are other spoiler-worthy details that have popped up and Marvel Studios has quickly had taken down, but since this is the Pre-Release I'll just stay away from those for now.

Some people have raised doubts about how all this magic brouhaha would be able to fit in with the "realistic" (quotation marks, of course) world established in Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. In an interview I read recently, Branagh (I think it was him, in any case) fired back that there would be science involved in the whole thing, and that Yggdrasil would play into it. Verrrry, interesting, honestly!

Also, it seems the S.H.I.E.L.D. presence is bigger than anticipated. Samuel L. Jackson's name has popped up in the cast sheets since the very first press release, and Clark Gregg jumped on not soon after. And I should remind you, we all saw Robert Downey Jr. sporting his Tony Stark look during the GG and it wasn't for IM2 reshoots. Finally, Marvel Comics E-i-C Joe Quesada and their star writer Brian Michael Bendis both tweeted a week or two ago that they were going to CA to film a cameo involving lots of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

Fiiiiinally... how awesome is it that we're gonna see the Warriors Three on the big screen, battling alongside Thor (wielding Mjolnir!) on a multi-million dollar summer blockbuster?

Speaking of aesir, that's a lot of big asgardian roles they filled out. Which is odd, considering how much of the movie takes place on Earth. You'd think they kept Mark Protosevich all-Asgard script instead from the looks of that cast rundown. Glorified cameos, or is Bifrost gonna hook up with Midgard during the climax?

Speaking of Asgard, what kind of look do you think the set design might have for those scenes? Bright and colorful, or grimy and "realistic"? What would you prefer, for that matter?

Well, that's all I have on the movie. Feel free to discuss and dissect and think out loud!

Concerning the casting, I'm really not all that excited to see either Stevenson or Hopkins in the roles in which they have been cast. They've played roles like those quite a bit in the last few years, it seems like you know exactly what you'll get with them.

Having said that, I think Branagh showed he can blend fantasy and science pretty well in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, so I am looking forward to this.

Yeah, as soon as I heard of Hopkins being cast my first thought was of him as Ptolemy in Alexander. But still, he's a perfect a choice as any, and the recent interview where he said he looks "like God" in his Odin makeup can't help but make me smile.

Stevenson in a fat suit (yes, he's gonna wear one) should be either ridiculous or hilarious (bad and good, respectively). Can't wait!

I sure hope they continue the AC/DC infatuation like in "Iron Man"; A "Thor" trailer featuring brutal viking/asgardian action set to "Thunderstruck" would be fucking awesome.

BTSMGL, I love everything about the film version of Marvel's...Thor! I think Thor should be...Jack "King" Kirby's Thor, the sheer Majesty of his Asgard. The film should be as outlandish, with every Asgardian speaking Faux Shakespeare as well. If there is a sequel, I would definitely want to see...Marvel's Olympus, and it's Lion, Hercules battle Thor on one of his quest/missions for Lord Odin. Hopefully, Don Blake will still be a surgeon, and eventually protect NYC, from petty criminals as well as major league Base Villains. Realism in a...Thor film? I say...Thee Nay!

Yeah, I forgot to add that Don Blake will no longer be part of the equation with the Marvel Movieverse version of the character.

If (and that's big "If", honestly) there's ever a sequel, I think we'll definitely see Hercules and his ilk show up.

I wonder how Kirby-ish Asgard's gonna look, or if it'll be just another big medieval/fantasy setting like LotR.

Seeing Kevin McKidd as Poseidon in PERCY JACKSON recently made me ponder what could have been.

BTSMGL, Then is Chris Hemsworth playing Thor, without a human guise? I would really like that, if that is so.

Yeah, Thor will be Thor full-time in the movie.

I wouldn't be surprised in they work in the Mjolnir-as-stick disguise into the movie, though. It'd sure be more inconspicuous than hauling this around:

Anthony Hopkins tells The Los Angeles Times a little bit about Odin. "He's a stern man. He's a man with purpose. I play the god who banishes his son from the kingdom of Asgard because he screwed up ... I decide he's not really ready to rule the future kingdom, so I banish him. I'm harsh and my wife complains and I say, 'That is why I'm king.' He's ruthless, take-it-or-leave-it. Women are much more forgiving; men are not so forgiving. I know in my life, my karma is, 'If you don't like it, tough, move on.' And I move on. I'm a little like Odin myself," says the actor.

So Jane Foster has been upgraded to a Doctor? Actually makes sense if Don Blake is out of the picture.
Amused that Stellan SkarsgÄrd has a role since there was quite a fanboy campaign going on to cast him as Thor.

I'm excited too, but the campaign was for his son, Alexander SkarsgÄrd (who I still think would have been fucking perfect, but I have faith Hemsworth can do a good job). When Marvel announced all their plans for the films a while back I was so pumped. I still am, but a publicity pic of Thor or some casting news for Captain America would get my blood pumping again.

Hell yes, but they've gotta close the movie with Immigrant Song, though.

So as I was sitting in the movie theater this morning, having just seen the Iron Man 2 trailer, I got to pondering....

Are we going to get a post-credits stinger that introduces Thor somehow at the end of IM2?

I think IM2 is gonna stand as alone as it can, without too many references to the other batch of Marvel Studios films. I mean, sure, there's the "superhero boy band" reference and maybe a lil' hint of super-soldier, but I don't think we'll have anything on the level of Fury in IM or Stark in TIH.

I hope I'm wrong, though. I'm unashamed about loving flagrant geek-bait like that. Just give me a radar blip in the shape of a hammer, Ed Norton on a computer screen (the movie takes place before TIH) or Cap's shield covered in ice right before the smash to credits and I'm set for the next year.

Also, there's an unofficial The Avengers (the movie) Facebook page with a spy shot from outside the studios and they show giant chunks of ice waiting to be loaded inside the building. Frost giants, maybe? (swipe for mild set-dressing spoilers which might reveal a specific and fan-favorite setting from the "Thor" books)

Yeah, it doesn't surprise me that they'd go with the bearded look for Thor. I'm wondering when we'll start getting our first "official" images from the movie, though. I'd imagine they'll show some teaser footage for Thor at Comic Con, but I'd think some images would show up before then.

I have to say, based on his interviews, Hemsworth is a damn sight more charismatic than fellow Aussie Sam Worthington turned out. Glad they're going for the beard look.

Here's another new Hemsworth video talking about the story being true to (and an amalgam of) the comics:

"long blonde wig"... ecch... that's PROBABLY the trickiest part of the whole get-up.

All those wigs never caused problems for the cast of Lord of the Rings, so let's hope they put some effort into this.

First Official Pic of Hemsworth as Thor!

Yahoo Movies has revealed the first official picture of Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

Let the debate begin!

Personally, I like it, and it's a lot more comic-accurate than I would have expected (albeit the modern costume as opposed to the original). I'd like to see some more shots (better lit, and including the helmet and such), but so far I like what I'm seeing.

Additionally, Latinoreview leaked what was apparently a stolen pic of "The Destroyer" yesterday, which was arguably even more comic-accurate than this costume is (pic's been taken down, but I bet you can still find it out there).

I like it, I don't know why but a Thor moive really appeals to me.

I wonder if Thor is cast out of Valhalla for not submitting news to the site.

Just to give credit where credit's due, several sites (Latinoreview among them) seem to have released this pic this morning...not sure who was first.

I don't like the plastic feel to elements of it, but overall it works.

Hemsworth looks the goods, as I knew he would. And by Hollywood standards, the guy is a monster in the height department . . . everyone in AICN is giving the rubber look to the suit shit, but let's face it, lighting and so forth will fix that right up. Iron Man, after all, is mostly rubber, too.

Its also possible they might add some cg effects to it, similar to "Clash of The Titans", but I doubt that.
Costume design and Hensworth look great.

There's a link right at the top of the homepage. They're not going to be too happy about this. This is not: Seagal is making a DTV movie about herpes. This is legit news.

Anyway...

I guess Iron Man 2 is going to bring pre-release discussion of this to a boil now. I don't follow the comics all that much. What I'm most curious about regarding this project: How will they explain his origins? Will Thor be an alien? Will he be an honest-to-God... GOD? And Valhalla a real place? An alien planet? Or an actual other dimension where vikings go when they die. What exactly are they doing? That interests me. And how, exactly, will they integrate all this mythological fantasy crap into what has so far been set up as a "realistic" world. By that, I mean a world grounded in reality - despite giant robots and mutant monsters and all that garbage.

Another thing... Kenneth Branagh has never really made a big ticket picture before. He's acted in a couple *cough*WILDWILDWEST*cough*... But this is not his ballpark. His last film was the inexplicable Sleuth. The closest he's come to the mainstream is Dead Again.

He's a talented guy, he can probably pull it off. And he has a sense of the Shakespearean, which will come in handy for all the campy larger-than-life portent that is sure to populate this film.

And will he play in the Marvel sandbox? Because he's being forced to use pre-existing characters already and somehow work them into his story. Favreau had the benefit of setting everything up. Branagh has to kind of follow through. How self-contained can this movie be?
That's a good-looking Thor, for sure, but is anyone else picking up a slight resemblance to this?

Little bit of a lookalike thing going on there, I reckon.

Well, I've submitted it now, really didn't mean to cause problems. Maxi mea culpa.

As for the handling of Thor and his world(s) I suspect they're just going to play it straight out of the comics. "Relatively Faithful" seems to be the vibe they're going for if the costume is any indication. If you want to get technical the Marvel Asgardians are "otherdimensional aliens with technology indistinguishable from magic" according to some descriptions...albeit ones that were worshipped as gods in earlier times. I don't know that they'll delve that much into it, though.

Didn't Branagh do Mary Shelley's Frankenstein? I figure that'd probably be his most mainstream effort so far. I have a reasonable amount of faith he can pull all this off. As you say, he's got the Shakespearean chops and someone described the underlying theme of the film as being "a story about a father and his two sons" (Odin, Thor, and Loki)...which lends itself to those Shakespearean sensibilities pretty well, I'd imagine.

If rumors are to be believed, most of the "links" to the Avengers stuff will be in the form of a shared SHIELD agent showing up (same guy from the first Iron Man movie...and the second, I'm told: Clark Gregg/Agent Coulson). I think Samuel L. Jackson said he's not even cameoing in Thor, so it sounds like the main gist of the story will be pretty self-contained. Though they'll almost certainly have the post-credits stinger that may well be a Tony Stark appearance.

The movie that's going to get hit with the "interconnected" bug big time will be Iron Man 3, if Favreau's comments on the matter are any indication. I think he expressed a concern about all the interweaving since that film is supposed to take place after The Avengers film. He also listed that concern as a possible reason he might be leery of directing Iron Man 3 himself...which seems a little odd given that he's an executive producer on Avengers, but it is what it is.
