Well, this sucker's already more than a month into shooting and all the important roles have been cast so I figure a Pre-Release Thread where everyone can chip in and talk about the flick should come in handy.
To run down just what we're dealing with:
Thor
Release date: May 6, 2011
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Cast:
Chris Hemsworth as... Thor
Natalie Portman as... Dr. Jane Foster
Tom Hiddleston as... Loki
Anthony Hopkins as... Odin
Joshua Dallas as... Fandral
Ray Stevenson as... Volstagg
Tadanobu Asano as... Hogun
Jaimie Alexander as... Sif
Idris Elba as... Heimdall
Rene Russo as... Frigga
Stellan SkarsgÄrd as... Prof. Andrew Ford
Kat Dennings as... Darcy, assistant to Dr. Foster
Samuel L. Jackson as... Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Clark Gregg as... S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson
And finally, Colm Feore as... uhhh, somebody.
Anyways, there we go! Quite an eclectic cast, I must say! Even without Brian Blessed, I think what we got is still more than interesting enough.
Plot-wise, there's been hints and rumors around, but it seems the gist of the movie will be that Thor gets cast out of Asgard by his father Odin for being selfish and an all-around asshole. While on Earth, he meets up with Portman's Foster and I assume comes to realize the error of his ways, just in time to fight back against his half-brother Loki's evil machinations.
There are other spoiler-worthy details that have popped up and Marvel Studios has quickly had taken down, but since this is the Pre-Release I'll just stay away from those for now.
Some people have raised doubts about how all this magic brouhaha would be able to fit in with the "realistic" (quotation marks, of course) world established in Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. In an interview I read recently, Branagh (I think it was him, in any case) fired back that there would be science involved in the whole thing, and that Yggdrasil would play into it. Verrrry, interesting, honestly!
Also, it seems the S.H.I.E.L.D. presence is bigger than anticipated. Samuel L. Jackson's name has popped up in the cast sheets since the very first press release, and Clark Gregg jumped on not soon after. And I should remind you, we all saw Robert Downey Jr. sporting his Tony Stark look during the GG and it wasn't for IM2 reshoots. Finally, Marvel Comics E-i-C Joe Quesada and their star writer Brian Michael Bendis both tweeted a week or two ago that they were going to CA to film a cameo involving lots of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
Fiiiiinally... how awesome is it that we're gonna see the Warriors Three on the big screen, battling alongside Thor (wielding Mjolnir!) on a multi-million dollar summer blockbuster?
Speaking of aesir, that's a lot of big asgardian roles they filled out. Which is odd, considering how much of the movie takes place on Earth. You'd think they kept Mark Protosevich all-Asgard script instead from the looks of that cast rundown. Glorified cameos, or is Bifrost gonna hook up with Midgard during the climax?
Speaking of Asgard, what kind of look do you think the set design might have for those scenes? Bright and colorful, or grimy and "realistic"? What would you prefer, for that matter?
Well, that's all I have on the movie. Feel free to discuss and dissect and think out loud!
