The Asgardians will probably just speak LOTR-English.
Is it wrong for me to get a BEASTMASTER 2 vibe from the plot?
yes yes THROUGH THE RAINBOW PORTAL OF TIME
post #54 of 261
The jig is up if Natalie Portman drives her convertible into Asgard and says shit like, "I'd rather eat breakfast than BE breakfast!"

I hope they then drive through LA and see a THOR movie title on a theater marquee.

Erix, Marvel's Thor is from...Asgard. In the comics the Asgardians needed to take the...rainbow bridge, guarded by Heimdall to Midgard (Earth). Hopefully, the Asgardians will be speaking in...Shakespearian dialogue, and will actually be gods and goddesses.

I doubt they're going to go with too much of the Shakespearean dialogue (though with Branagh directing you never know). The "LotR English" vibe is what they've been shooting for in the current comics, and in all truth Thor's level of "Thorspeak" varies wildly from writer-to-writer. The most influential Thor writer outside of his Lee/Kirby origins (Walt Simonson) actually had the "thees and thous" very toned down. I do share your hope that the Asgardians will seem suitably "godly" though. Asgard should "feel" like it's different from the real world. Though I'll just be happy if it's handled better than Olympus in the Clash of the Titans remake....
I'm actually encouraged that the costume looks colorful and larger-than-life and even a little hokey. Thor's always been one of those titles that never played well small.
After LOTR, it should be clear that it's not impossible to make armor and winged helms look awesome.

Seeing this pic of Hemsworth struggling to lift the Hammer made me wonder what exactly Thor will be doing on earth. I'm assuming he won't have the Hammer for most of his Earth scenes and he'll probably be a bit depowered. To me, the Earth-based stuff is the biggest question mark, not the Asgard scenes.

Also, here's an official, Hi-Res shot of that Thor/Odin pic. Probably the best photo released thus far.

I'm really hoping for a modern day Masters of the Universe.

Not sure if it's a spoiler, but just in case...

*SPOILER*

Well, the synosis of the movie said that Thor will be punished by his father Odin, and got sent down to Earth as a mortal to serve his sentence. I think because of that punishment, he lost the hammer Mjolnir. In the picture released, I think Thor found Mjolnir and was trying to lift it, since he is the only one who is worthy & able to lift it successfully.
I don't think the synopsis is a spoiler.
But I knew about that stuff. I was just wondering what he'll be doing during his stay on Earth. I guess he'll be flirting with Natalie Portman and searching for the Hammer.
Holy shit, Hemsworth is buff in that pic, which is quite possibly my favorite one thus far. I'm still on board for the film, provided I can see it in 2D, as everything so far has the feel of the comics. I mean, I know it's hard to say just from still images, but that throne room pic was pretty much perfect. The one that wadew1 posted also looks like it could have been ripped right out of the comics. As long as Branagh manages to strike the right tone between epic and campy, and gives us a good story without skimping on the action, I think I'll be satisfied.

I'm guessing that S.H.I.E.L.D, not knowing what he is and having already quarrantined the hammer will cause him some problems. Eventually, they'll realize that he's not the enemy, and help him against Loki.

As for the picture with the Hammer, I think the coolest thing is that S.H.I.E.L.D had to create an installation around where the hammer fell because they can't lift it.

Best STUNNIN STAN cameo yet.

that would be awesome. Just to get a scene with a helicopter or crane trying to life it, only to collapse..

The 5 minute trailer/footage from ComiCon is on Youtube, in audio only.

All of the word from out of Comicon regarding the footage it that it was incredible, and that there was surprise that it was so long.
Does Marvel plan on releasing the footage online? Most of the other movies that had panels at comicon seem to be doing that.

After listening to the audio, all I can really say is that I'm glad they ditched the old English and I'm surprised at how nasty the Thor/Odin exchange got.

Someone got all Hi-Res on Thor's Mighty Helmet:

That's badass. Glad some heroes still have their head wings.

Love the Stan Lee pic above as well.

My father was a huge Thor fan when he was a kid, I showed him a couple of images from the film and for a second, I swear I could see that the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day.

I just noticed that Balder isn't in the cast list. I guess they're saving him for the sequel?
And I heard there were FROST GIANTS in the trailer, so that's great news.

When's that trailer hitting the internet? Comic Con's over!
It was in 3D, so most likely anyone who recorded it got nothing but a blurry mess.

I meant officially. I can't watch some blurry shaky bootleg (in any event). I want to seeeeee it!
Would appear to be out finally.

edit: or was until the bandwidth limit was exceeded on their site.
I am pretty excited for this film, I have to admit. I'm still upset that Kevin McKidd didn't get cast, but I'm also coming to the point where I realize that I need to get over that. Kenneth Branagh is making a super hero film, Ray Stevenson is in it, and I need to start getting psyched to an appropriate level.

I've actually enjoyed the most recent images I've seen from the film. They have the kind of operatic quality that I associate with Branagh's films.

Anyway,

I have a question, and I hope you'll indulge me as I know basically nothing about Thor

I've been reading this thread over, and it seems that there were perhaps going to be elements of Old English, or at least antiquated english in the film. Those have apparently since been excised from the script. Could those "old english" elements in the script have partially lead to Branagh's hiring? If so, would Branagh be upset if that stuff was cut out? Could it have been what drew him to the project? His career has not exactly been hot lately (Though he continues to do fine work in television and independent film), so he was probably happy for the high profile gig, but all the same I can't help but wonder if he could be disappointed by this development. If someone who knows more than I do about this would enlighten me, I'd appreciate it

Thanks!

Yikes, that stuff on Earth looks worrisome.
Liked the trailer quite a bit. Definitely feels very similar tone and look-wise (Outside of the Asgard material) to the HULK and IRON MAN films. My only worry is that the Asgard stuff could potentially come across as humorless and stuffy; somewhat reminiscient of the Krypton opening of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE. Hopefully I'm dead wrong.

All in all, it looks like it'll appeal to the normies and, if Branagh delivers, could be a really fun time at the movies. I'm not really expecting a SPIDEY 2/TDK/X2 though.

Yes, and it isn't a cam. It is great, 2D quality. AND IT FUCKING ROCKS.

What?! It looks like it fits perfectly in with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, which was exactly the point. It looks just as solid as the Asgard stuff.

Where can you find this footage? I really wanna see it

Why, I have no idea where you could find this footage. . .

Ahem. . . what were we talking about again?

Thread Starter
Can we talk about... *ahem*, it? I'm afraid to even spell it out for fear of getting Timed Out or Banned.
Just don't, y'know, LINK to it and I think you'll be ok...if you were at comic con.

In other news, that Stan photo is golden.
I cannot wait to see...Thor! I do not need any footage to be...Excited, though I will be looking forward to seeing a, teaser or trailer! Maybe, there will be something released by...New York Comic Con!
If it's stolen (which seems likely) then don't link to it... because things are a little 'odd' around here regarding that sort of malarky*...

...that being said, it's possibly leaked deliberately to create a bit more buzz, sounds like Thor got beat-up on a bit at ComiCon... Pilgrim and the likes stole his thunder (pun intended) so it could well have been leaked to get wider-range idea of how their little summer indie film is tracking.

Studios have done stranger things.

*I don't advocate piracy, but when you're stealing "advertising footage" for promotional purposes, I think banning people for discussing or linking to it seems a little bizzare
post #91 of 261
I think it looks good. ON BOARD!

If this is true it will be released soon.
If I had watched it I'd probably feel better about the movie. But I don't think I'd be completely on board yet. At least I'd think that the costumes work fine for me. If I had watched it.
If I had watched it, I'd say I probably would have loved the way they realised alot of the Asgard stuff, like the Rainbow Bridge. I'd probably think that it really had a fantastical, other-worldly element to it. If, as stelios said, I had watched it.
agent coulson is funney
If I've seen photos I'll say that I can't wait to see a trailer.. and Matthew H is an idiot.
Seen the footage, and I am way ON BOARD. I actually want to see this a lot now, and I was pretty "meh" on it before. So job well done to whomever "leaked" the footage.

Even my reservations about Hemsworth in the lead (I was previously cursing Branagh for not going with a more suitably talented actor who looked the part in Alexander Skarsgarrd) have been alleviated. Hemseworth has even done something with his voice, and looks to be channeling the more rugged, brutish stylishing of fellow Aussie Russell Crowe (which helps if you are playing a Thunder God), which is pretty far removed from my only experience of his acting (as James Kirk's bland pretty boy daddy in the first few minutes of the last Star Trek). Hemsworth may just pull this off.

But yeah, Branagh looks like he can pull this off. The stills looked pretty cheesy, but everything looks pretty good and acceptable in motion. And the earth stuff fits right in with Iron Man and Hulk. The Flash Gordon vibes have totally gone away for me.

ComiCon stuff usually surfaces a few weeks after the event, mostly for this very reason... Grainy phone-camera stuff hits the internet or leaked footage does. I've never understood why the folks who run ComiCon don't simply offer an "online subscriber" service (for international folk, or other who can't make it) that for say, $1.99 you get to log-in on the day of the con and enjoy the same footage that everyone else gets on the day, or hell... do it via iTunes.

Also... had I possibly found this footage online, I would be of the opinion, a hypothetical opinon mind you... but an opinion none the less... that this footage looked rather entertaining, and that Agent Coulson is going to be pretty wicked in this thing... If such a thing was actually reality... hypothetically... Regardless, I'm still not 100% on-board based on the officially released stuff I have seen.
I never understood why they don't have these videos ready to go the day after the con. The cat's out of the bag. Several thousand people saw it. What's to be gained by sitting on it for weeks after the fact?
I have no idea how I feel about the trailer or tone. I like spectacle. I like genre mashups. My gut tells me it's miscast in a few areas though.
