More or less... Except it seemed you had some kind of expectation with Captain Ron. I expected Old Dogs to suck. It was still worse than I could have possibly imagined.

I actually really liked this movie a lot.

.....

Your "discovery" of the Death Wish series is heartening. Shame you weren't sold on IV. I admit it isn't quite as exhuberant as III, but it still has the delightful "sandwich" scene and that gem where the amazingly lifelike mannequin of Danny Trejo is blown to smithereens in one of the true highlights of 80s cinema.

Not to mention:

I TOLD you... I WARNED you, I'd KILL her. I TOLD y-- KERBLAMMMM!!!!

The mother scene. I couldn't believe someone got away with putting that in a mainstream comedy.
That scene just makes me think of the film that could have been. It's really brilliant. The rest... less so.

That scene is great for several reasons. It keys you in right away on what the "message" of the movie is. Also, it's genuinely moving. And it also shows that Ricky Gervais is more than a persona. He's actually a very good actor. The whole movie is a showcase of this. The scene towards the end where he's morphed into a fat Jesus and he's trying to convince Jenny Garner not to marry Rob Lowe is also very good.

I will accept any criticism that says the movie could have been better directed. It lacks almost any sense of style and feels like a sitcom pilot. But the writing and acting are, for the most part, very solid. Louis CK disappoints. But he's not a very good actor in any case. Just a terrific stand-up.

161 - Mr. Majestyk (1974) - Bronson as a bad ass ex military melon farmer. Really fun.
162 - The Wild Bunch (1969) - A great western. Even if you can'y really root for anyone.
163 - The Mechanic (1972) - Bronson as a bad ass hitman. Good kills. Weird ending.
164 - Yojimbo (1961) - Kurosawa makes a classic that would inspire generations.
165 - Death Hunt (1981) - Rambo meets Cliffhanger. Only with more bad ass men.
166 - Changeling - Not one of the best Eastwood's, but decent story and acting.
167 - Prince Of Persia - Average big budget entertainment. Terrible acting and script.
168 - The Sting (1973) - Newman, Redford and Shaw = A class act all around.
169 - Tombstone (1993) - Amazing cast of characters. Pure pop corn fun.
170 - The Elephant Man (1980) - Such a sad story. Amazing Black & White cinematography.
171 - Rashomon (1950) - Kurosawa explores the meaning of life and good vs bad in men.
172 - Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid (1969) - Great chemistry between leads.
173 - Touch of Evil (1958) - Welles directs and acts masterfully. Cheston in brown face.
174 - Undisputed III : Redemption - Kick ass DTV cage fighting movie. Adkins is a monster.
175 - You Don't Know Jack - Great story, very good acting. Direction is a little flat.
176 - Toy Story 3 - Gets way better as it unfolds. Good direction, script could be better.
177 - Network (1976) - Timeless story. Fantastic all around. One of the best scripts ever.
178 - Some Like It Hot (1959) - Really funny and great performances.
179 - Hot Tub Time Machine - A few killer moments, the rest is average.
180 - The Crazies (2010) - A very well shot mediocre horror remake.
20 more!
I'm gonna do 185 by the last day of june. Will assure me 365 by years end. Finishing the IMDB 250 (80 to go) and i will start completing the top 1000 list on the other thread. I think i can tackle it in less than 5 years.

Don't forget to eat!

I'm just editing my initial post as I add films. You'd never hear from me if I did it in batches of 20...

Jesus christ, Tati. How's the colostomy bag holding up?

(also, good work)
I'm never going to have time to watch as many as Tati, but I have found that keeping a list has for some weird reason motivated me to watch more movies. I'm only averaging two a week but that's way up from where I'd been. The list is a nice reminder to keep up.

Yeah, i noticed that when i first started last year. Used to think i watched a lot of movies. Made the list and realized i was watching maybe 2 or 3 a week. And decided to change that and learn more.

Also, the last 2 months i've been pushing this into overdrive just because i have a lot more free time and to keep my mind engaged and not cry on the corner or post in the broken heart thread hahaha
post #61 of 149
Solid plan. I hope you're not getting fucking huge over there, but it's impressive to see you go after so many quality films. I'd want to let them marinate a bit myself, but whatever works for ya.

Huge? As in weight?
Nah, i'm in better shape than i was 6 months ago. And i totally understand what you are saying about letting them sink and thinking about them. But if i have 3 hours to kill. I'd rather watch a movie. And if my choices are Brooklyn's Finest and The French Connection, I'm gonna watch The French Connection.
Yeah, I worry you're becoming a sedentary blob watching five movies a day.

Watch French Connection on DVD, not Blu-Ray.

I just watched the Bluray 30 minutes ago. It was kinda atrocious image wise. Loved the film though!

Friedkin insists the Bluray is an accurate representation of what the movie should look like. So what's wrong with it?

Tati, How do you watch all of these? Is there some kind of Argentinian Netflix? Serious question, I'm just trying to work out how to watch more movies without paying shedloads of cash.

If you rent all these individually it must cost you a bomb.

There is !
It opened up recently and it changed my life haha.

I use that combined with a really great store i found that sells and rents classic films. And TCM has become my best friend on cable.
Here's my last ten, fell off a bit this week:

60.Crime And Punishment In Suburbia - fucking horrible
61.1990: The Bronx Warriors - Rewatch. Castellari does dystopia. Pretty stupid, but stylish.
62.Angels In Disguise - Pretty sure Mean Streets is like a Nolan-ized version of The Bowery Boys. Like Abbott & Costello with pistol whippings.
63.Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All – “lost” animated film from 1979. I love rotoscoping.
64.Daybreakers – my second favorite film set in 2019.
65. Telefon - Don Siegel and Charles Bronson. Compelling story, Bronson doesn't DO a whole lot.
66. A Clockwork Orange - first rewtach in 17 years. It's politically and sexually juvenile, but what a beautiful looking and sounding film. Truly a musical!
67. Flash Gordon - rewatch. The colors, man. The COLORS. Great cast, and Sam Jones.
68.Five Easy Pieces - Rewatch. The end of the Sixties, the beginning of nihilism. A sympathetic portrait of a man shedding his humanity.
69.Dog Day Afternoon - Rewatch. So deceptively simple. For some reason I was near tears for most of the running time.
70. The Monster Squad - First rewatch since the 80s! If I were five years younger, this would be my Goonies.

I'm late to the parade, I guess.

Started a list on my laptop yesterday called "Movies Watched, Starting July 2, 2010". I'm planning on going until at least July 2, 2011, of course. (By the way, my list does count movies I've seen before. My goal is to get to 500 films again this year. I had a light schedule last year and did nothing but watch film, but it was the year I really, really fell in love with film.)

So, my list starts like this:

1. Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage - Excellent. As an enormous fan already, this just solidified everything I knew.
2. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - I knew I should listen to the Chewers more often. Fucking awesome.

I'll only update in lists of at least 30 from now on.

Went with The Apartment. Loved it. Wilder was a seriously talented guy.

Quote:
181 - A-Team - Decent fun. Great cast. Too much CGI. Needs a better story.
182 - Easy Rider (1969) - A time capsule if there was ever one. Messy as hell. Nicholson hey!
183 - Green Zone - Smart action film based in the Iraq war. A bit messy, but really good.
184 - The French Connection (1971) - A constant chase in 70's New York. Hackman is aces.
185 - Pale Rider (1985) - A boring western. Terribly paced and 20 minutes too long.
186 - The Searchers (1959) - John Wayne goes looking for a kidnapped niece. Very good!
187 - Bonnie & Clyde (1967) - The acting did it for me. Hackman and Dunaway were great.
188 - Le Scaphandre Et Le Papillon (2007) - Moving, inspiring, great. I'll never complaint again.
189 - Repulsion (1965) - Sexual repression leads to homicidal spree! Beautiful photography!
190 - Rio Bravo (1959) - Good, but not great. Can't get myself to really like Hawkes & Wayne.
191 - The Losers - Perfectly mediocre action film. Good cast but wasted. Jason Patric owns.
192 - The Seventh Seal (1957) - Fantastic idea and themes. Timeless cinematography.
193 - High Noon (1952) - Nice little western. First and third acts are great. 2nd drags a bit.
194 - Strangers on a Train (1951) - Great story. Fantastic acting. Bruno is a great character.
195 - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - A little bloated. Great thriller, amazing photography.
196 - Cop Out - The worst movie i've seen all year. Completely incompetent. Just horrible.
197 - Ladri di Biciclette (1948) - Really sad story. Great acting. Lacks a bit of resolution.
198 - Louis C.K Chewed Up - Fantastic stand up. Probably the best on the job now.
199 - Cool Hand Luke (1967) - Great ensemble cast and script. Loved the ending.
200 - The Apartment (1960) - Just great. Incredible script. First act was hilarious.

201 - Diarios de Motocicleta - Inspiradora.
202 - Repo Men - Great first and third acts. Good world building. Gory, Solid fun.
203 - It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - Fuck sounding cliche. It's wonderful. Stewart is great.
204 - Edmond (2005) - A lesser Mamet script made good by a great William H. Macy.
205 - 8 & 1/2 (1963) - Expertly shot and staged. Mess of a script. Great acting and women.
206 - White Heat (1949) - Fantastic performance by Cagney. Great story. Timeless ending.
207 - Juice (1992) - Tupac has gangster aspirations after watching White Heat.
208 - Platoon (1986) - Visceral portrayal of war. Fantastic ensemble cast.
209 - Glory (1989) - Great ensemble cast. Denzel was amazing. Brotherick was not as good.
210 - The Conversation (1974) - Very interesting and gripping story. Great direction.
211 - Spartacus (1960) - The definition of Epic. Holy shit, so many people, locations, etc.
212 - A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) - Great acting. A Great role for Leigh. Brando hot.
213 - Date Night - Direction and cinematography are very weak. Cameos are fun. Mediocre.
214 - The Big Sleep (1946) - Fantastic. Bogart, Bacall, Hawkes in top form. A little complicated.
215 - A Town Called Panic - Funny, inventive, crazy. Beautiful!
216 - F For Fake (1972) - My crush on Orson Welles grows every moment. Great documentary.
217 - Key Largo (1948) - Great little film. Simple, short effective. Edward G. Robinson's film.
218 - The Lady from Shanghai (1947) - Good story, some great shots. That funhouse finale!
219 - Sabrina (1954) - Loved it, and one my favorite Bogart performances. Wilder is great.
220 - Duck Soup (1933) - A comedy masterpiece. So simple, yet so smart. Perfect timing.
Middle of a Bogart / Welles phase.
Ten more:

71.Miami Vice - Sizzle > Steak
72.Cyrus - Nowhere near as broad as depicted in the trailers. There's a bumpy third act shift but it's a sweet little story.
73.St. Ives - Bronson is all breezy fun one last time before Cannon turns him into the 80s angel of death.
74.Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein – one franchise’ best meets several franchise’s worst.
75.Scarface (1932) – X marks the spot! Surprised at how much of a remake the remake was.
76.Black Dynamite – probably made Tarantino jealous
77.Amer – Giallo homage that missed the pure joy of film the real ones had.
78.Confessions of a Superhero – compelling but I felt like I was laughing at real pain and real issues a little too much.
79.Inception –
80. The Phenix City Story – weird blend of film noir, redneck revenge flick, and documentary. Very unusual film, incredibly harsh in parts for 1955.
Why the blank spot after Inception, Phil? Still mulling it over?
Yeah. I'm real curious to see if the blockbuster has turned (or walked up, wokka wokka) a corner with that movie. But I'm still thinking about its place in a list of movies I watched this year.
Reading these makes me regret not starting my own at the outset of this year. I really think it'd be the kick in the pants I often need to watch more films.

221 - On The Waterfront (1954) - Fantastic story, acting and script. Hell of a performance.
222 - Mr Smith Goes to Washington (1939) - A little too cute, but fantastic. Stewart is perfect.
223 - Rope (1948) - Perfectly staged little film. Was it adapted to a play?
224 - Harvey (1950) - Sweet and fundamentally great. Lacks a little focus. Stewart delivers.
225 - The Graduate (1967) - Really great. Visually appealing. Smart, funny, touching.
226 - Inception - Mind Blowing. Gonna need several viewings to process it.
227 - Brief Encounter (1945) - Lovely short exploration about an affair in the wrong time.
228 - The 39 steps (1935) - Really interesting early Hitchcock. So many seeds of the future.
229 - Don't Look Now (1973) - Weird and creepy as fuck. Some great scenes.
230 - Outland (1981) - High Noon in the Alien universe. Great cast, good effects. Decent.
231 - The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957) - Some weird editing choices apart, masterful.
232 - Once Upon A Time In America (1984) - Stunning. A better score away from perfect.
233 - Macbeth (1971) - Polanski reacts to his wife's murder by doing a very dark adaptation.
234 - The Battle of Algiers (1966) - Stunning. Beautiful, horrible, crude. Great photography.
235 - Predators - Serviceable. Well shot. Terrible script. Goggins steals this.
236 - Youth In Revolt - Pretty Strong, nice visuals and great script. Liked it a lot.
237 - I Love You Phillip Morris - Very good. Strong acting, story and direction.
238 - Manhattan (1979) - Woody Allen's companion piece to Annie Hall. Lovely and true.
239 - Marley And Me - I love dogs, so i enjoyed this quite a bit. Even if it's pure vanilla.
240 - Dial M For Murder (1954) - Another impressive script and movie by Hitchcock.
Hitchcock wins this batch.

242 - Notorious (1946) - Another grand slam by Hitchcock. Fantastic ending.
243 - Scotland PA (2001) - Let's adapt Macbeth into a fast food joint in the 70's. Or let's not.
244 - REC 2 - A very clever sequel. Effective twists on the genre and great camera work.
245 - Centurion - Great locations and violence. But the weakest of Marshal's output.
246 - COMPAÑEROS (1970) - Corbucci's & Nero's Masterpiece. Incredibly fun.
247 - Brooklyn's Finest - Crash with a better cast and slightly better story. Barely good.
248 - Un Prophete - Great French crime film. Reminiscent of Goodfellas.
249 - About A Boy - I really got to enjoy Hugh Grant romantic comedies. Lovely.
250 - You, Me & Dupree - Lacking.
251 - Karate Kid (2010) - Almost great. Chan is fantastic and the photography is stunning.
252 - The Red Shoes (1948) - Excellent. Simply magnificent.
253 - A Night At The Opera (1935) - Marx Brothers continue to create comedy classics.
254 - The Day The Earth Stood Still (2009) - A few decent ideas. Keanu's not bad. Average
255 - Amazing Journey: The History of The Who - Really interesting docu about the band.
256 - Talk To Me - Don Cheadle rocks this movie. Ejiofor is also on fire. Great biopic.
257 - Assault On Precinct 13 (1976) - Great idea, score and a few good shots. Average
258 - The Runaways - Great first half, very good acting and music. Shannon steals it.
259 - The Gold Rush (1925) - A comedy classic.
260 - The Square (2008) - Really solid crime noir from Australia. Great performances.
COMPAÑEROS & A Prophet won this round

Latest batch:

81. True Believer – rewatch. Fun late 80s courtroom potboiler. Great score.
82. Winnebago Man - The director is too present, and tries too hard to separate himself from the people laughing at the youtube video. Still compelling.
83. Macbeth - Roman Polanski's first movie after his wife's murder. About as grim as you'd expect, and twice as bloody.
84. Scotland, PA – Flawed but clever and charming.
85. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World – Wright is three for three. Loved the influences.
86. The Other Guys - There Goes My Hero
87. Piranha 3D - Why God made 3D
88. Mad Max - Scrappy fun. Gibson's a kid!
89. The Road Warrior – The perfect car chase film, and when the smoke clears, maybe Gibson’s best movie overall.
90. Lethal Weapon – I was too cool for school in 1987, but I’ve come to appreciate it.
91. Animal Kingdom – solid but I was reminded of the dour crime indies of the 90s.

Oh shit you dudes are keeping up with rewatches too? I'm only listing the "new" ones. Up to almost 70 so far!
Many of my rewatches are the first rewatch in over a decade, and in many cases two decades. I'm not listing every time I pop in a commentary track as background audio and the like. And I saw Piranha 3D twice but only listed it once.
Groovy. Not that I'd want my list to have BEE MOVIE on it multiple times, anyway.

Ahhh, this is essentially a movie tracker thread, something I've done for years, in some form or fashion.

So, I'll share my LJ tracker, starting with this past August. If you want to check out this year's prior months, you can access them rather easily through my LJ.

I list all my viewings, and I don't watch movies/shows in pieces or listen to them as background noise. Full, proper viewings.

Here is last month's movie section of my tracker:

August 2010 Tracker

8/02 - Kick-Ass (2010) (DVD) **** "Take cover child! Now, switch to Kryptoniteee!"
8/03 - 'Gator Bait (1974) (VHS) ** Swamp rat, Desiree (former Playboy Playmate of the Year, Claudia Jennings), is framed for an accidental murder and hunted by a posse of inbreds and lawmen, all of whom become hard to tell apart from one another, save for the badges and uniforms. This is your standard rape/revenge flick, done at an absolute crawl. Jennings is short on acting chops and even shorter on her clothing throughout the affair.
Gatorbait II : Cajun Justice (1988) (VHS) * Former G.L.O.W. (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) girl, Jan MacKenzie, takes over the lead female in peril spot this go-around. This sequel's only merit is that it makes the original look (marginally) better by comparison. MacKenzie is an attractive lady, but one would be better served ogling her fine form on the VHS cover art, instead of wasting their time with this mess.
8/04 - Warlock Moon (Joe Bob Briggs audio commentary) (1975) (DVD) ****
8/05 - Scared to Death (1981) (VHS) ** Bored to Tears. Alien rip-off with lots of cat and mouse stalking filler between hapless actors...er...victims...and a man in a suit....er, The Syngenor (SYNthesized GENetic ORganism), a science experiment gone horribly wrong. Rick Springfield was to play the male lead, but Lady Luck smiled upon him and he was replaced in the eleventh hour.
8/06 - Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) (DVD) ***1/2 "Okay, lay down. We got a stupid baby to make."
Three O' Clock High (1987) (DVD) **** "You know what Mitchell? You're the biggest pussy I've ever met in my life. You didn't even try. How does that feel?"
8/12 - Friday the 13th (Killer Cut) (2009) (DVD) *** Manfredini's music is sorely missed.
8/13 - Friday the 13th (1980) (BD) **** The ending scene, in the canoe, with all the colors from the trees bouncing off the lake water, and "Sail Away, Tiny Sparrow" soaring on the soundtrack, looks and sounds so good on Blu that I was tempted to raise a lighter in salute. A lighter I don't even own.
"Fresh Cuts: New Tales from Friday the 13th" (2009) (BD) ****
“A Friday the 13th Reunion” (2009) (BD) *** Adrienne King can still scream. Bless her!
“The Man Behind the Legacy: Sean S. Cunningham” (2009) (BD) ***
Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) (DVD) ***
8/14 - Friday the 13th Part III (Anaglyphic 3-D) (1982) (DVD) ***
8/15 - Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984) (DVD) *** The Citizen Kane of Slasher in the Woods films. Trish is tied with Alice for my favorite Final Survivor girl of the series.
8/18 - Piranha (1995) (DVD) ** Alexandra Paul reminds me that I love her not so much for her acting skills.
8/20 - Piranha 3-D (2010) (Regal White Oak Stadium 14 Garner, NC) ** It's like being stuck with a Girls Gone Wild tape that had 12 minutes of a KNB effects reel accidentally taped over it. No exploitation film, with this much nudity and violence (and there is a ton of both), should be so lifeless and limp as this effort.
8/21 - Welcome to Spring Break (1988) (DVD) *** A slasher, incognito underneath a visored-helmet, is electrocuting Spring Breaking teens with his motorcycle. Meanwhile, John Saxon is being John Saxon.
8/25 - Clash of the Titans (2010) (BD) *** Dare I say "Better than the original!"? The CGI is so impressive throughout, that I actually felt that the creatures were occupying the same space as the actors. The Kraken sequence is one for the books. You want a giant monster movie, this is it. The only real quibble is Sam Worthington's anachronistic hairstyle (or lack, thereof), which really sticks out, distractingly so.
8/26 - The Naughty Stewardesses (1975) (DVD) *** Of course a film with the marquee allure of "The Naughty Stewardesses" manages to pretty much deliver everything but the titular promise. Young, naive Connie shacks up at a stewardess pad to start her career with the airline, and is shocked by the sexually open nature of her new sky buddies. Before long though, Connie is out and about on the town, hooking up with a brooding photographer (who apparently is searching for the woman to cure his longstanding impotence), and shacking down with a sugar daddy, who has designs on flexing his pent-up militia skills and basket sex prowess. That this all culminates in a laughable kidnapping/ransom finale didn't surprise me in the least.
8/28 - Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) (BD) *** Solid animation and great voicework really enhance this DC Animation effort. The highest compliment I can give this film is that it makes me want to read the original source material. Looking forward to other works from this creative group.
8/29 - DC Showcase: Jonah Hex (2010) (BD) **** Effectively captures the feel of the comic book with an animation style that I didn't think would. Thomas Jane and Linda Hamilton lend voice work to this great short of Jonah crossing paths with a homicidal woman of the night.
8/30 - Halloween II (1981) (DVD) *** An out-of-season viewing in honor of the Weinstein scheduling prowess.
8/31 - Deep Blue Sea (1999) (BD) *** "Einstein's theory of relativity. Grab hold of a hot pan, second can seem like an hour. Put your hands on a hot woman, an hour can seem like a second. It's all relative."
Deep Blue Sea (Renny Harlin and Samuel Jackson commentary) (1999) (BD) ****
"The Sharks of The Deep Blue Sea" (1999) (DVD) ****
"When Sharks Attack! The Making of Deep Blue Sea" (1999) (DVD) ****

Ratings:

**** = Excellent
*** = Good
** = Fair
* = Poor

All titles in bold represent first-time viewings.

I will try to continue what I started long time ago.

51. The Lovely Bones – I had way too many problems with the film to enjoy or appreciate it even a little bit.
52. It Might Get Loud – It’s not a great documentary mostly because the concept of getting them all in one room doesn’t really work, but separate stories about them are great. After the film, I practiced my guitar for the first time in many years.
53. Armored – It’s sad that Nimrod Antal hasn’t made anything to rival his debut Kontroll. Great cast mostly wasted here.
54. The Square – Nice little crime film from Australia. It did wet my appetite for Animal Kingdom even more.
55. The Road – I really liked The Proposition, but this one doesn’t really work. It looks great and a few scenes are terrific, but as a whole it left me cold.
56. The Men Who Stare at Goats – A couple of months have passed since I saw it and it seems I have totally forgotten about it, but I remember not having any major complaints while watching the movie.
57. Looking For Eric – It’s pretty good, especially when Cantona and Evets share the screen.
58. The Ghost Writer – Romanski hasn’t been this good in decades. It has been said many time before, but I loved how pleasantly old fashioned it was.
59. A Prophet – So good. Tahar Rahim’s performance is perfect.
60. The Cove – Brilliant and heartbreaking documentary. I really like the way it was put together.
61. Gentlemen Broncos – Not very good, but I chuckled at some of the jokes.
62. Let it Ride – Dreyfuss is on fire here. Actually, the film is still a lot of fun.
63. Shutter Island – It was creepy, scary, pulpy yet appropriately serious. Loved every minute of it. Even the end.
64. Bloody Sunday – Nice to see how Greengrass started using his trademark style. He was still learning it, but emotionally film works.
65. Hausu – Another film I discovered thanks to CHUD. It has been a party favorite ever since.
66. Mister Roberts – It’s pretty good, I guess. Lemmon’s performance was interesting, the ending not so much – even though it made sense and was obvious.
67. Curse of the Demon - It’s enjoyable, but Tourneur has made better films.
68. Spies Like Us – A childhood favorite that still managed to make me laugh all the way through.
69. Detour – All that sexual tension between the main characters really surprised me in this low budget film noir. Really good film.
70. Weird Science – Saw it for the first time. It’s OK, but I have already forgotten about it.
