We're doing a bunch of recording to try and nail down about 3 years of songwriting. This is actually a much older song that we've resurrected and recorded called "Time Gone". Have a listen, let me know what you guys think:

Once again, there's a lot to love about the main guitar passage. Those sparkly lines are always a lock when you gents are concerned.

Given my tendency for positive comments, you've probably wondered if I'm capable of anything approaching criticism where Green's concerned. Well, I like you guys too much to not be honest. I'm not wild on the transition from verse to chorus. The heaviness seemed a little out of sync with the rest of the song. The back-up vocals could use a lift as well. They sounded very faint.

Having said that, the outtro's great. It follows on so beautifully from the regular verse that I wish it'd been used more than once. I know this sort of idea isn't for everyone (and it can go awry in the wrong hands) but it could be interesting to marry the form to the content here. "Time Gone" suggests nostalgia. Nostalgia suggests repetition. Maybe a very simplified structure of essentially that one section repeated (like the verse and chorus of "The Sweater Song", but with a different vocal melody) could work. I know I certainly wouldn't mind hearing variations of that one sequence for the song's duration.

I hope you don't mind me weighing in with this and turning the thread into a songwriter's "workshop." In the spirit of the Guitarist thread, I thought it'd be fair game.

I appreciate the feedback Bobby!

We tinkered with the mix, the problem with the levels is actually me. I sang my part in the beginning a lot louder than the chorus part, so the mix is really off, probably going to go back and re-record the chorus. As for the transitions, it's funny, this song used to be kind of one level (we wrote it as a four piece with a different drummer 8 years or so ago). When we brought Joe into the band, we wanted to heavy up the chorus a lot to play up his double bass skills. Probably still a work in progress in some spots. I definitely had fun playing the ebow, though.

Thanks again for your insights Bobby, suggestions means investment, and I love that!

Happy to hear that, man. I'm the same way, but I appreciate the sensitivity of sharing these sorts of ideas and opinions. It's hard enough with band-mates so, if it's an outside voice, it becomes even tougher.
