Significant other's top 5 films. - Page 2

Great topic. Here's my wife's list:

1. Amelie
2. Rushmore
3. The Royal Tenenbaums
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
5. The Fantastic Mr. Fox

Can you tell she has a thing for Wes Anderson? I'm not sure I'd have any of these on my top 5, but I think she has pretty good taste in films.
Nice coinsidence. While she's crazy about movies (she also edits documentaries) we never really talked about our favorite films until a few days ago. She named more than five films, so I will just mention the ones that she watches way too many times.

The Terminator
When Harry Met Sally
West Side Story - thankfully, it's been a while since I heard it playing in the background.
The Fisher King
It seems like District 9 is a recent addition to the list.

I don't have a sig other at the moment, but my ex hating No Country for Old Men, The Assassination of Jesse James and Tropic Thunder certainly contributed to our relationship's demise. He considers himself a movie buff, and owns more movies than I could probably collect in a life time, but a) he hasn't watched even a quarter of the movies he owns and b) he can't discuss why or why not he likes/dislikes a film without taking it personally.

What about mistresses' tastes, y'all?

Diva, be my mistress.
I only allow my side girl to watch Criterion releases.
Oddly enough, my right hand enjoys the same movies I do.
I've never asked, but from what I gather:

1) Return of the King
2) Up
3) Howl's Moving Castle
4) Monty Python and the Holy Grail
5) Pirates of the Caribbean

She used to enjoy Twilight, but has come to accept that it's shit. I take credit for that. She's also got an abnormal hatred of aliens, Chevy Chase and Uma Thurman that I can't figure out for the life of me. Oh, and extreme violence, too.
She told me three of them a while back, but now I've got two more to add to the list. In no particular order

1. Grease
2. Armageddon
3. Edward Scissorhands
4. Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist
5. The Notebook
Okay.

I will go on record as saying that my husband is heavy into movies, and probably watches serious flicks more than I do. He just doesn't have the time to come on here and talk about them.

But according to him, this list right here is based purely on rewatchablity:

Terminator 2
Predator
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (this is our shit together right here)
The Breakfast Club
The Matrix

My girlfriend's top five:

Spanglish
As Good As It Gets
Serendipity
Grumpier Old Men
My Life
I'm single, but the girl I'm currently stalking really likes RUGRATS GO WILD.
The wife could only cull together three:

1. Howls Moving Castle
2. My Neighbor Totoro
3. The Princess Bride

My wife could only come up with 3.

Apocalypse Now
The Breakfast Club
West Side Story

On the surface, my wife and I have pretty disparate taste in films. Yet there are significant overlaps in certain areas that, in a way, seem completely bizarre.

Her top 5 would almost certainly be
THE PRINCESS BRIDE
THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT
STAR TREK II
WEST SIDE STORY (Gay! )
THE KARATE KID
FATHER OF THE BRIDE

She's drawn to weepy shit, but not the Facebook age neo-weepies (think WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN vs Nicholas Sparks-y crap). It aligns with her teen years being the later 80s. She carries a spreadsheet of Disney dvd releases and monitors it with the tenacity of a Spanish inquisitor.

We both, however, have a serious sweet tooth for disaster films (the good, the bad and the SyFy level). It's like our own personal Satellite Of Love. Oh and Columbo. You can imagine the sheer joy as two people seperated by a big enough age gap discover a shared love for the detective in the rumpled raincoat.

There's also been some sincere cultural exchange between us. Over the decade and a half, I've become more fond (her word...tolerant=mine) of Will Smith, though we both fell asleep during THE LEGEND OF BAGGY PANTS. Her appreciation for Peter Cushing has grown from a seedling into a beautiful flower over the years. Weirdly, my mania for historical films has rubbed off on her in a way that has led to her personal appreciation for Stonewall Jackson(?!), though I know it's Stephen Lang she's smitten by, and who the hell wouldn't be.

We're not about to sit down together and revel in the sweaty angst of SORCERER or work through a container of HaagenDazs with ONLY YOU anytime soon, but as the years roll by, we've seen a very complimentary process at work.

The wife would like to add Wayne's World and Hedwig and the Angry Inch to round out her five.

She had me at Howl's Moving Castle.

My girlfriend isn't a huge film buff or geek girl, I guess. She likes stuff like Dirty Dancing, Scream, Wall-E, and Newsies. Also, pretty much anything with Sandra Bullock gets rented when it comes out, even though it's the same fucking movie every time. I can't complain too much, though, because she'll sit through and usually enjoy anything I suggest watching.

Plus, one time, when I realized she had never seen a single Star Wars movie, we watched A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back one after the other. Then we went to bed, woke up, she cooked us an awesome breakfast, and we watched Return of the Jedi. I know true love when I see it.

My girl is not really into films, I think her all time favourite is Clueless, she seems to watch it every bloody month. She's also really into Juno and Up at the moment which isn't too bad, she went to see Twilight after a few of her friends raved about it but she thought it was "fucking rubbish and the guy looks about 12", ha!

She completely hates anything gory, horror, action or sci fi films which limits our cinema trips a bit, we end up watching a lot of comedies. I told her District 9 was a comedy and she nearly freaked out when the soldiers got splattered, although she enjoyed it in the end as it's quite goofy/slapstick.

I think she's slowly coming round to sci fi and geek stuff that I have on a lot, she's really into Lost thanks to watching along with me, she spends hours reading Lostpedia and asks me endless questions while we watch.
My wife loves:
  • LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy (this is her cinematic comfort food) and HARRY POTTER
  • Studio Ghibli
  • Typical mainstream geek blockbusters like the STAR WARS trilogy and INDIANA JONES and THE MATRIX.
But I believe her favorite flick is THE JOY LUCK CLUB. Having a close relationship with her sister, she likes the exploration into the lives of these different women and the family dynamic. A close 2nd, maybe The LORD OF THE RINGS?

Other movies that I've seen her respond to, recommend to others, or watch frequently:
  • Xmas Ad Nauseum: SCROOGE (the Albert Finney musical) and WHITE CHRISTMAS
  • WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING and MISS CONGENIALITY (and really most Sandra Bullock romcoms)
  • LEGALLY BLONDE (and other Reese Witherspoon fair)
  • THE INN OF THE SIXTH HAPPINESS
  • MUSIC FROM ANOTHER ROOM
  • FATHER OF THE BRIDE 1 & 2
  • ONCE
  • THE TENTH KINGDOM
  • Errol Flynn swashbucklers
  • Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly or Bing Crosby flick
  • Carey Grant's resume, especially the lighter stuff like OPERATION PETTICOAT
  • Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals
  • ADAM'S RIB
  • Any awesome Kung-Fu or Wuxia flick (DRUNKEN MASTER 2 especially)
  • THE MUMMY and POTC series
  • CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK
  • Kickass female leads like TOMB RAIDER or UNDERWORLD
  • Because of her Dad, John Wayne westerns
  • ENCHANTED

And from her youth...
  • DON'T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTERS DEAD
  • THE KARATE KID
  • CLUELESS
  • Disney's ALICE IN WONDERLAND
  • Disney's PETER PAN

On the TV front, we watch/ed all things Joss Whedon, ALIAS, LOST, BONES, CASTLE, and SUPERNATURAL together. Like me, she adores SCRUBS and will watch any rerun at any hour, no matter how many times we've seen an episode. As a couple, we get a kick outta SCARE TACTICS and any ghost/haunting show with re-enactments. When we first started dating, it was XENA and HERCULES.

But she's prone to channel surf... She also likes Charmed, Will & Grace, Ghost Hunters International, What Not To Wear, Project Runway, Clean House, How Do I Look?, Dancing With the Stars, Extreme Home Makeover, Law and Order, and Judge Mathis. And if any Egyptology special pops up on History, she's there.

She sees movies as something to escape to (fantasy and fairy tale) and prefers not to be too stressed out by them. She loves a good on-screen ass-kicking though. When asked what she's in the mood for, it's almost always a comedy or adventure flick. She hates unhappy endings. And zombies. I wish she shared my fondness for horror, but we have watched EVIL DEAD 2 plenty of times. She loves a good bunch of geek properties, will watch any pulpy scifi or comic book flick, and gravitates towards a decent balance between "guy properties" and "girl properties". SHe was looking forward to and enjoyed the new STAR TREK for instance, follows news about the HOBBIT with baited breath, and is glad to her Diesel is making another Riddick movie.

The wife's top 5:

Love Actually
Sweet Home Alabama
Moulin Rouge
Star Wars (esp. Episode III)
Super Troopers

Though, she wanted to list others as well:

Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Guys and Dolls, The Princess Bride, The Notebook, Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, Cinderella, Zoolander, Grease, Shakespeare in Love, Best in Show, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Speed, The Court Jester.

I make fun of her "romantic comedy" affections all the time...

So, can we officially state that Princess Bride is essentially the female Star Wars?

If by female you mean "Awesome despite its horrible score," then yes.

Maybe, but women also eat up The Lord of the Rings.

I suspect it's due to the 9+ hours of men crying.
1. The Departed
2. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
3. Velvet Goldmine
4. The Buttoners
5. Moulin Rouge

Those are her five "desert island" movies. She also watches a lot of bad musicals (Connie and Carla, cough), and independent films from Utah about Mormons. She herself is an Italian Catholic from Pennsylvania.
in no particular order

NOTLD
16 Candles
Shaun of the Dead
Green Mile
Sixth Sense

I would cheerfully choose The Princess Bride over the Star Wars movies any day.

My wife likes to watch all kinds of movies. But her tastes is all over the place. She'll watch anything with a young pretty girl (Hilary Duff, Lilo, Alba, Brittany Murphy etc) but right now she is in to the zombie/infected genre (28 days later, I am Legend and the like) as well as horror.

She loves Iron Man, G.I. Joe (who would of thought, but pretty girls as I said earlier), No Country, Children of Men, The Hangover, Die Hard but her all time favorite is Save the Last Dance.

Like i said her tastes are all over the place which is good because she'll roll with me and try anything, this is very good trait because she is always game to watch movies and that I love about her.

If my wife was in to hot young broads, I like to think I would spend less time watching movies and more time cultivating our other common interest.

My husband's top five favorite movies (in no particular order):

- Back to the Future
- Raiders of the Lost Ark
- Grosse Pointe Blank
- Aliens
- The Dark Knight

There are a lot he loves - Star Wars (not the prequels), LOTR trilogy, Die Hard, etc. There are plenty that he thinks are good but aren't so re-watchable like Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, etc.

On the "will your SO go see things with you?" -- He is very willing. I made a point of choosing some really good ones to start - tried to make sure he would like them - and try to be honest about whether or he's likely to like them. So it's not a problem trying to get him to go see Moon (which he of course enjoyed). He totally rocks - takes me to see Bright Star and that sort of thing.

What can I say: I married the perfect man.
1. Annie Hall
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Amelie
4. Grease
5. Saturday Night Fever

Honorable Mentions: Rushmore, May, Blue Velvet, Goodfellas, Carrie, Dirty Dancing, Une Femme est Une Femme, The Apple

Pretty good taste overall. She's a bit too squeamish to watch most horror movies, and she loves French New Wave which aren't really my cup of tea, but overall we're very compatible when it comes to movies. Especially when it comes to rape movies. Good Christ Almighty, do we love rape movies.
My wife's favorites.
1. GONE WITH THE WIND.
2. THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT.
3. GREASE
4. MOULIN ROUGE
5. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

I was surprised by how much she adored BASTERDS: we have a long history through Tarantino. One of my early dates with her was to see PULP FICTION, which she despised at the time (she hates when people use the n-word in films). But she loved BASTERDS so much. She doesn't do horror movies, period, but she's okay with gore if the context of the film justifies it.

I agree with Phil: I don't want a carbon copy of my tastes. I'm already weird.

Ten movies I know she really likes:

1. When a Man Loves a Woman
2. The Talented Mr. Ripley
3. The Anniversary Party
4. The Break Up
5. Sex and the City
6. Steel Magnolias
7. Boogie Nights
8. Brokeback Mountain
9. Marie Antoinette
10. The Holiday
My wife has zero interest in anything with zombies, spaceships, crime, superheroes.
1. Love Actually
2. Amelie
3. Pan's Labyrinth
4. Home for the Holidays
5. some Harry Potter or something I would guess.
Tigeroovy's Top 5:

1. Eternal Sunshine

2. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

3. Watchmen

4. Fight Club

5. Walking Life

We have pretty similar taste in movies, although I'm probably more into horror than he is.
