Pawn Stars on History

Am I the only person utterly fascinated by this show? It's on all the time so you can catch up quickly on missed eps. Obviously a lot of editing and situational framing takes place or else we'd see mostly video of people pawning thier old gold and handguns. But the stuff they do show is fascinating and I love seeing what they pay vs. what people think their stuff is worth.

I enjoy it a good bit too. It's like a mini history lesson with a capitalist angle.

This exchange never gets old:

Appraiser : It's real. I 'd say that, at an auction, it would go for between $800 and $1000:

Pawn star: So what do you wanna do? Sell it?

Owner : I would like to sell it.

Pawn star : How much you looking for?

Owner : I'll take $800.

Pawn star: No. I'll give you $300.

Owner : Aw, man. How about $700?

Pawn star : $300.

Owner : can you do $600?

Pawn star: no.

Owner : $500?

Pawn Star: $300.

Owner : (long pause) $350?

Pawn star : ok.

I love this show. It's a more mercenary version of Antiques Roadshow.

There was one customer where the Old Man offers him $700, the customer asks for $900, and the Old Man says, "OK, $600." He's all kinds of take-no-shit awesome.

I have never even heard of this show, but the title of this thread makes me think dirty thoughts.

Love this show, but it makes you realize that unless you are down in the dumps desparate, don't sell to a pawn shop. It's a massive ripoff. Just ebay it or something.

I do want to check this shop out though. They buy such cool unique things that the store must seem more museum than pawn shop.

On the whole, you never want to sell anything to anyone whose plan is to turn around and sell it themselves.

Chumlee makes this show watchable. We're going to Vegas this August and we are going to go by there just to see if he's real or not. He's too good to be true sometimes.

See if they're giving hot air balloon rides.

I want to run a four-hour errand with him to the Old Man's house, chill, have a sandwich and watch a movie.

I love how pissed people get when their family heriloom is a fake. And nothing tops how offended the Pez guy from NJ was when they wouldn't meet his price.

- "What?!? My mom had these pristine ink-jet screened Pete Rose rookie cards in her attic for 30 years!"
- "The guy who sold me this real ivory tusk in India swore it was real!"
- "This bag of 4,876 used stamps is worth nothing! I don't believe it!"

"It can't be fake, I've had it for years!"

Yes, because forgery wasn't invented until, like, 2004.

Oh man, that guy.

"That's an insult to the Pez community!"

I would like to know more of this Pez community. Do they get together? Have conventions? PezCon '94?

That was the best. The Old Man asking Chumlee where the hell he's been.

"There was...traffic? Both ways?"

Those cards (late 60s Rose cards, not 1963 rookie cards) were super rare back when I was collecting baseball cards 20 years ago; pretty obvious that they were fake when the guy strolls in with these eye-popping bright 40-year old cards without any kind of protection on them.

I want that guy and his "community" to get their own show.

There was a guy on last night who brought in what he thought was a valuable French statue from the 1800s. Rick calmly pointed out not only a seam that proved it was a recast, most likely from the 1950s, but also a rather prominent "Made in the USA" stamp on the bottom of the statue. And the guy got all indignant, snapped "I don't care what you tell me," and stormed out like he was depriving them of some great treasure. Hilarious.
