Not even coming to this country and four English shows? There, my friend, is the rub.

I'm expecting big things from this, considering how long it's been since Self-Titled. "World Sick" is a solid start, but it doesn't feel like a massive stretch. Granted, more of the same isn't really a bad thing, when it's that nice.

Just listened to World Sick. Fuck Yeah, can't wait for the rest.

Minehead?

Really, they're coming to Minehead?

Really looking forward to this, I absolutely loved their self titled album but I found myself getting into all of the side projects a whole lot more. I realised, some time last month, that I actually owned 16 albums which had some vague connection to BSS and it's amazing how phonically varied all of those side projects are from the wussy pop of Stars (which I love despite myself) to the almost country folk of Feist, punky pop of Metric and the Post Rock of Do Make Say Think there's definitely a lot of different musical stuff going on in the heart of that band.

Definitely going to have to try and get down to Minehead to see them.

The appearance at Heaven is as equally as head scratching? Didn't know the London gay scene had got that far out of their dance shell.

Surprised this thread hasn't picked up since it leaked a couple weeks back and started streaming at NPR yesterday. They also played Letterman.

Loved You Forgot It in People for the most part, but I've been on the fence on this band since the self-titled, which had some great moments, but also highlighted some "too many cooks" problems. Hated Spirit If... and didn't get the second BSS Presents album.

I'm kind of loving Forgiveness Rock Record, though. I'm not sure how it fares in terms of actual playing time, but this feels like their tightest effort, despite the signature big, big sound still in play. Not much filler at all, and a sturdy set of rockers and pop songs. It's strong enough that it should hold up to the onslaught of great records coming out (or already out) this year.

Totally agree with Dave. This album is easily their strongest yet. Too many highlights, and the variety is impeccable. Tight and focused.

This year? How about this (coming) week?

BSS, New Pornographers, Hold Steady (I'd venture that at least one of those tops the year-end list of about 90% of this board)... plus off-the-wall efforts from Mike Patton (Italian songs?) and Flaming Lips with Henry Rollins covering Dark Side of the Moon. Plus The Deftones (who don't do much for me, but people whose taste I respect certainly like them), Godsmack (see Deftones, but without the "taste I respect" part) Minus The Bear, Court Yard Hounds (half of the Dixie Chicks, and the first single is decent), Asia for god's sake, and the goddam-still-not-dead-yet Temptations??

Well, I've heard the BSS, New Pornographers, Hold Steady, and National albums, and I honestly don't know which I like best (probably between the last two, but I've only streamed the NP album once, and BSS has never been on the same tier as the others for me - although I do think this might be their best). And that's on top of pretty stellar albums by Ted Leo, the Liars, Frightened Rabbit, Midlake, Joanna Newsom... and I've been super busy the last few months, so I'm sure I'll be backtracking well into the summer.

Prediction: Pitchfork's going to hate the new BSS. It's just accessible enough that it doesn't fit their narrative for the band. Although they may surprise me.

The past two years have been somewhat weaker and it's paying off in dividends with this year in music. All of the albums you mentioned above, plus plenty more that have been worthy checking out. I was even thinking of starting a thread called "what the hell is with all the great music this year?" It's been amazing so far.

I don't know, I think Pitchfork has been pretty tired of BSS farting around with shitty side projects and albums that aren't terribly thought out as well as You Forget It.... My money is on them liking it (although not loving it, and certainly not claiming that it's their best) and hailing it as a return to form. Somewhere in the 8.0-8.5 range.

I'm not the biggest Broken Social Scene fan for some reason (the "too many cooks" issue has blocked me to a certain extent, I think) but I like what I"m hearing from this so far.

Best year in music since '94. No joke.

Between Vampire Weekend, Mumford & Sons, Jonsi, The Hold Steady, Broken Social Scene, The National (my first listen was euphoric), and LCD Soundsystem (don't know how much I love this one yet, but the strong tracks are REALLY strong), my ears have been pretty overjoyed.

The MGMT disc is even growing on me. From what I've heard of the new Kate Nash I dig a lot.

Oh, yeah - forgot about Vampire Weekend and Jonsi... and Drive-By Truckers, too (which isn't one of their all-time best, but I like it lots). Maybe Parker should start that thread before we get sidetracked here.

Been loving the new BSS.

I loved the self-titled because of how loose it felt and basically love this album for the opposite reason. Definitely feels like their tightest most focused release yet.

Also: No potential year-end love for Broken Bells and the new Spoon? This year is ridiculous, New Pornographers, BSS, The National and Menomena are all must-buys for me.

I actually hadn't intented to derail the thread with a consideration of 2010 as a whole (I was just remarking on how front-loaded next week is, when this album comes out), but if I were, I'd suggest we not overlook The Sadies, Sharon Jones, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Willie Nelson, David Byrne/Fatboy Slim, an upcoming brilliant release from Richard Thompson, and potentially interesting new stuff from Tom Petty, Balkan Beat Box, Stone Temple Pilots, The Black Keys (though on first listen I'm not loving it), Paul Weller (which I am loving), the newly-unearthed Exile on Main Street tracks, The Boxmasters, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, interesting-sounding live sets from Johnny Winter, Hot Tuna and Moby Grape ...

and oddly enough the new Jackson Browne, who I normally can't tolerate for more than a few minutes at a time, but on his new live album he's given co-billing to David Lindley, and it looks like about a third of the songs will be his stuff, so who knows...?

Shows you what an amazing year it's been when I forget Spoon. Haven't heard the Broken Bells.

Oh, and Surfer Blood's debut needs a shout-out (thanks to Brad for putting them on my radar!).

Your prediction was correct:

8.3 from Pitchfork.

This album just gets better and better.

Totally in love.

'Meet Me in the Basement' is the greatest instrumental I've heard in forever.
