Angel Heart (1987)

It's exquisitely well-made. The score, the cinematography, the actors...all excellent. Its twist ending must be the envy of M. Night Shyamalan. So why didn't I like it more?

A well-executed Polanski riff. Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby...they're here. But the movie doesn't transcend its inspiration. The movie isn't weird enough, or "un-supernatural" enough. This movie is in-between. The religious scenes have been seen many times before - and I rolled my goddamn eyes at the African-American chicken sacrifice.

Mickey Rourke saves this movie - his performance is believable, as his character grows to become capable of what you wouldn't initially expect. But Angel Heart reminded me of the other Alan Parker films I'd seen so far, like Midnight Express - it pretty much does exactly what you'd expect it would. The ending is a bit of a surprise, but if you wanted to see this movie, you would've been hoping to see one.

I really don't know about Angel Heart. The movie works, and its craftsmanship is remarkable. But it's too familiar at times, and too tries too hard at others with cliche imagery. See: freaky voodoo fucking.

I agree with your basic premise (well-made, but doesn't work for me). In my case, though, I think it was having read the book first that made the film pale by comparison: the movie's Hollywood spooky, but I recall the book as being genuinely creepy and disturbing.

I've never read the book, but this is the first time I've heard someone say something positive comparing the two. I've ALWAYS heard the book was shit.

Yeah im actually the other way, I realy enjoy this flick more more so than anyone I have met. Also with a blu-ray floating around out there for 10 bucks.....good times.

I love the shot of Rourke taking a drag from his cigarette with his hands covered in blood and holding a razor. The film used to freak me out as a kid, although a lot of the demonic/apocalyptic stuff used to do then, but watching it as an adult I actually thought elements of it were kind of hokey.

Love the look of the film it's beautifully shot, but it feels opulent and rotten at the same time like the entire film is diseased. It's also remarkably claustrophobic at times, although that's helped by knowledge of the ending and the understanding that Harry is just slowly walking towards oblivion.
