Pizza Hut now offending more than taste buds

"At first I thought maybe this was some type of promotional," said Karl Mayberry. "This had to be the name of a pizza that I didn't know."

But it wasn't. The words Mayberry saw on his Pizza Hut order ticket did not describe the pizza at all. He believes they described him. Where his name should have been, there were two adjectives instead.

"It was 'big' and 'black,'" he said.

Would it be racist if I wanted to shove this guy's receipt up his black ass? The guy behind the counter at the Hut is a fucking moron, but this guy is acting like he's had some great injustice done to him, and he's really just going for a cash grab.

That's Albany, Georgia, for you. I grew up about 45 minutes southwest of there. This was our NBC affiliate (WALB). That's why I moved as soon as I graduated high school--too many rednecks.

"It's good that they did manage to step up and do something, but still they have not addressed Karl Mayberry's problem," he said. "First you've got to deal with Karl then you deal with everyone else."
I find it far more disturbing that he refers to himself in the third person.

Martin doesn't like your comment, Mattioli.

At least the employee can't claim he never heard his name.

There's no lawsuit here, of course, just a PR disaster. And even though Karl Mayberry is going for a cash grab, it had to be unbelievably offensive to see that on Kar--his receipt.

I'm struggling to see the racism here. Is the word "black" now taboo?
if anything i would be more offended by the "big" than the "black", but i'm not black.

How would they know if he's "big"? Unless either he's ordered a lot of pizza from them or hell, he just sounded like a Big Black man on the phone.

Hey! Let me tell you something, Savage. When you see this Martin guy, you tell him... oh, wait. I see what you did there. Mattioli finds this amusing.

Do you honestly think if the guy was white the cashier would've written Big and White on the receipt?

Not the point. He might've put "big blonde" or "big redhead" or "big bearded". Describing someone as black is not an automatically racist insult, and this guy's massive overreaction just makes it harder for genuine incidents of racism to get the attention and justice they deserve.

EDIT: Before I get called a racist or anything, I'd just like to confirm that yes, the cashier is an idiot, and yes, Pizza Hut were absolutely right to offer compensation for the perceived insult. The guy's continued pursuance of this case as if he were Rosa Parks is just silly.

If he really is "big" he should try to fly Southwest and get another lawsuit going. Furthers the cause and such.

This was incredibly stupid on Pizza Hut's part but I agree it sounds like the appropriate action was taken in this case.
