My favorite part...

Quote:
It concerned a piece I recently did that mentioned Henry Johnson, who was awarded the French Croix de Guerre in World War I
Quote:
My mention of Johnson's heroics drew a rebuke from a fellow named Ken Thompson, which I quote verbatim and in its entirety:

"Hate to tell you that blacks were not allowed into combat intell (sic) 1947, that fact. World War II ended in 1945. So all that feel good, one black man killing two dozen Nazi, is just that, PC bull."
Classic...You just can't make shit like this up.

Oh god, the comments are killing me and not in a fun, laughing manner. Like I can hear them killing my will to exist.
Thanks Richard, I was having a really pleasant day before I read that. And Doc, why'd you have to call my attention to comments?
Depressing article. Extra depressing comments. Made me want to nuke the US. No offense meant, of course.

Yeah, the comments are a nice kick in the testicles. Especially the one saying the article is an attack on "people who think for themselves". Sigh.

Internet! You were supposed to be this great Library, an archive of truth and thinking! Oh how we have failed you!
You people need to go and check other sections of the internet. I see these idiots all the time on news opinion boards. They're dumb as shit, angry as hell, and completely paranoid.

This columnist doesn't seem to realize that it was the Un that Un-Nazied the world.

There's an old adage I rediscovered a little while ago, and I've been repeating it to myself lately almost to the point of absurdity:

You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.

Reminding myself of this has let the bruises on my forehead heal after years of brick wall butting. As a result, I scowl a lot less. Almost made it a new sig here; might still.

This comment has me scratching my head:
Quote:
Facts and truth?
Are you kidding me?
I've been blessed with three son's.
One of them has become a father and better yet, a DAD.
Her name is Kassie. She is a miracle. She has done a lot for me but maybe the best of all is that she has been teaching how to love a girl, all over again, from scratch.
I've fixated lately on Lady Ga-Ga, Taylor Swift, & Tik-Tok. Sexual? You bet!
But Kassie has given me so much more respect for the female person.
Another reason to love our country is the fact that we allow the gift of Women to show us who they are. No wonder that the Taliban is such a mess?
I love Girls!

oh god what is that

Good Christ, where's the Patriot Act when you need it?

Also, someone tell this guy that fixating on that weird robot from RETURN TO OZ doesn't equate to "I love girls!".

I read a couple of them and my brain tried to escape through my ears. Jesus fucking Christ, at what point in time did "I'm right because I WANT to be right" become a mantra to live by for these people?
Wow. Mr "Ken Thompson" was bad enough, but those comments... This is why I try to stay away from internet comment boards (though morbid curiosity usually wins out over reason). Instead of ignoring facts, why can't these people ignore their self-preservation instinct and save us all future generations of low-IQ, mouth-breathing idiots? And who is teaching these people how to navigate the internet? Stop it!
That shit is so fucking depressing I couldn't even finish reading it.

Come on, this isn't anything new. Like AT ALL. We've always been a nation plagued by ignorance, racism and people who just stick their fingers in their ears and say "la-la-la." The only difference NOW is that thanks to the internet 1) they have a voice and 2) we have an exposure to said voice. Their bullshit isn't just relegated to churches and Klan meetings anymore.

I disagree. There were commonly accepted channels of intellectual discourse in the national mainstream media that either sought to educate against these views if not ignore them altogether, but now most of those channels--not just Fox News, although that is a particularly vile offender--have been corrupted in order to pander to ignorance, which in turn only emboldens people in their stupidity. Yes, there has always been ignorance, but never before in the course of American history has it been so highly regarded on such a wide scale. Thusly, it runs runs rampant in ways it never has before.

I think it's more that more people have access to having a voice. The sad truth is that half of everyone has to be bellow average.

Well, there's nothing wrong with being below average, or ignorant. It's the reveling in it, as opposed to remedying it, that is the problem.

Given the subject matter, I'll assume that was deliberate.

I must be a true pessimist. I think it's closer to 75%, if not more. My location undoubtedly has a great deal to do with this notion.
75% of everyone can't be below average.

The problem isn't that there are more idiots (there aren't), or less respect for facts (there isn't), or even that "these people" have more access to the means to make their voices heard (which they unequivocally do). The problem is that the mainstream media now bows to such people. There was a time when media and communications were dominated by intellectuals who had some respect for the rules of discourse. Dimwits like Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter would never have survived publicly going up against people like Edward R. Murrow or Walter Cronkite. The mainstream media now caters to the idea that opinion is equal to fact, and so much airtime is dedicated to that principle that it's now effectively become true.

What's sad is that the media does this not because the people in charge believe it, but because the majority of the public (who are, and always have been idiots) believe it, and would rather see reflections of themselves and their pre-existing notions than actually be informed. The fact that the public debate has been openly hijacked by dunderheads encourages the common man to believe that this form of debate is acceptable, and in fact, preferable.

So yes, there were always this many ignorant people, and they always wallowed in their ignorance. But until now, they weren't publicly celebrated and seen as a model for debate and thought. Hell, intellectualism is now openly vilified.

I would argue that there are probably just as many loonies, it's just that Fox has cornered that market in terms of broadcast "journalism" and that base is more reliable than liberals, etc. I don't have the stats, but the percentage of people who are loyal Fox watchers is marginal, it's just the mainstream gets juked by this.

The current narrative is that Scott Brown voted for a job bill, but four other republicans did as well. But only Brown is singled out. This is being gamed to build a narrative.

Well, Brown was supposedly the symbol of the average Joe's disgust with the Obama plan.

The symbol voting FOR a Dem-sponsored bill doesn't quite work out so well for the narrative.

Personally, I think it's specious to draw a wide-ranging conclusion from a single senate race. It appeared to me that Brown was simply a superior candidate to Coakley.
