The Best JRPG Of All Time Comes To PS3

Absolutely cannot wait. Definitely pick it up if you haven't already.

What are your picks if you disagree?

Man, Grandia was one of my all time favourite games on the PS1. I remember getting really excited whilst climbing the wall at the end of the world and being genuinely shocked that all of that was about maybe a third of the way into the game. The game just had an amazing sense of discovery and place, you honestly felt you were on an adventure and it was pretty tough too.

I remember getting my ass kicked by a bunch of the early bosses and then the final BIG BAD being a complete nightmare. Definitely going to download this when it hits.
Grandia II was even more awesome.
Never played Grandia, but the Shining Force series was one of my favorites (I was a Sega Genesis guy).
My pick for best is Xenogears, but I sure won't fault anyone for liking Grandia most.
Phantasy Star 4 or the two Lunar games.
FF 6, Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears trump this game.

Grandia's pretty fun though.
Yeah, FF 3/6 and Chrono Trigger are the best for me, CT being the tops. I do still have fondness for the original Suikoden, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, FF 8 (yes, I'm that douche) and could be convinced that Skies of Arcadia is damn good. Also Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia, but they're more Zelda likes.

However, Grandia was pretty cool. Although, it hit right about that time where I was starting to get super fucking sick of Japan-ness and young children saving the world, so it had that going against it.

This reminds me, Lunar: Silver Star Harmony is coming out for the PSP in a week. Can't wait for that, especially since I missed picking up the PS1 version.

I've gotta give Xenogears another whirl sometime soon. I dug it but remember getting very tired of it by the end of the game.

Another game that I might consider challenging Grandia's place at the top is Skies of Arcadia. Such a fun, beautiful game. Gotta play through Legends again, maybe I can dust off the Wii one day for it.
Skies of Arcadia and FFX were the last two times a Japanese game really hooked me in. I remember nearly flunking my Journalism course because I was up until about 3 or 4am every night playing Arcadia. It just had this weird rhythm where you'd uncover new stuff like every 30 minutes.

That still feels like one of the longest games I ever played, the thing just kept going on and on. I remember finding the Japanese/Chinese secret kingdom and thinking I was near the end and then realising I still had an entire third of the game left.

In my personal opinion, Xenogears is one of the greatest games of all time. The first disc is so unbelievably great and provocative. I don't think I ever looked at a video game in the way I would look at a book that blew my mind. Xenogears was one of those revelatory moments in my life where I realized that video games can transcend something more than just a throwaway disc experience.

The 2nd disc, not so hot.

I loved SKIES OF ARCADIA. I've never played GRANDIA but an 80-hour game for $10? Can't pass that up.
Having played the hell out of Grandia II, (and never played the first one), I'm getting this.
Im just amazed Grandia made it to the PSN store; with the direction the've taken with the PSone classics (ugh), I was expecting Shadow Madness or Legend of the Dragoon to make it fist.

Also, were the fuck is Alundra for the psp, Sony? i'd pay ten bucks to have that on the go.

EDIT: forgot about picking a best PSP jrpg; I'd go with Xenogeras or Valkirye Profile.
I played the Grandia about biplane enthusiasts for the PS2. Quit halfway through.
I've never been an R.P.G. guy, and I'm not even sure if Grandia registered on my radar at the time, but this article made me very curious, indeed. Nishi said in the excerpt that it's "ideal for R.P.G fans" and "casual" gamers, but will those really unfamiliar with the genre find this a viable stepping stone?

Hey, I love Shadow Madness! The combat is absolutely horrible but the game still remains one of the most clever and downright funny rpgs. Dialogue and characters are some of the best, but I guess no one wanted a Western take on the JRPG. I dorked out when I found out that one of the art guys for Dead Space worked on it (this interview)

I gave it a fair chance, but I couldnt just get into it, Alex.
Guess it was just too bizarre for most players at the time.
I still stand by my "PSone classics selections is awful" argument, though.
Well, they did get Jumping Flash 1 and 2, and for this I am forever grateful.

Not enough to make me forget that Japan has Vagrant Story, Tecmo's Deception, Bushido Blade, Policenauts, and Philosoma already, but, you know, that's something.
You had me sold until I watched the game in action. Then I remembered: oh yeah, it's a JRPG.

I think the last JRPG I played was Final Fantasy I. Or maybe Dragon Warrior II. We all have our vintage favorites. I still replay Final Fantasy periodically, and it's still a lot of fun. Though the Marsh Cave can go fuck itself.

The Snatcher fan in me would kill for a western Policenauts official release in PSN.
Also, where the hell is Strider 2?
The Snatcher fan in me would kill for a western SNATCHER release in PSN. Let's start there.

Good point...then again, it took 16 GODAMNED YEARS for us to get Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.
No that, "Dracula X" SNES game doesnt count...it never did.

Certainly didn't. What a mess. I almost bought a Turboduo just for that.

Suikoden is also on PSN, and certainly required in your collection. Now if we could get that second one...

How the hell has Suikoden 2 not made it yet to PSN? (that Persona remake was a good step in the right direction, then again, thats Atlus for you)
There's a goldmine here to be exploited.
Also, i will once again raise the issue of Guardian Heroes not being re-released.

Man, I would be all over Guardian Heroes. That, Dragon Force, and Panzer Dragoon Saga and I could finally get rid of my Saturn.
That SNES Dracula X port wasn't THAT bad. It just has more in common gameplay-wise with the NES games than Castlevania IV/Bloodlines/Rondo of Blood.

That is to say, it's pants pissingly hard.

Soundtrack is still damn impressive for a cartridge, though.

It wasnt BAD, but it paled so much in comparison to what the real game actually was.
Still, gotta give it how fucking hard the last Dracula fight was...goddamn pillars and pits!
This reminds me, I cant be the only want who wanted Samurai Showdown RPG to make it to the west, right?
Having never experienced the first Grandia and having just recently wrapped up Final Fantasy VIII (which I got off of PSN), I'm going to be all over this one. Thanks for the heads up Alex! There is a handful of decent stuff on the PSOne Classics but most of the time we've been getting lackluster releases. The last few weekd have been particularly dismal. I got the first Suikoden off of the service so, like ryoken, I'd be happy to give them the cash for the 2nd one, and I'm hoping they get to Final Fantasy IX sooner or later too.

Dude. YES. Except I don't have any of those games for my Saturn. Goddammit, why do I even own a Saturn?
I've often considered buying a Saturn just for the Panzer Dragoon Saga (which, from the few people I know who've played it, is incredibly good) and the Dungeons and Dragons arcade package.

So once I'm done with FFVII, I should pick this up over FFVIII (which I never played)? I admit to knowing nothing about Grandia, I just don't want to end up with another Wild Arms.

Jesus man, don't you even mention those two together! Blind buy that sucker.
Hey, Wild Arms was kind of worth it for the awesome intro music.

I'm replaying FFVII right now too. I got so burned out from that game when it came out, I didn't have the energy to go for FFVIII. However, since I'm breezing through it, not really trying to explore every inch of content, I'm thinking of giving it a go.
FFVIII: There are like thirty summons, and the game is around 100 hours long, no joke. I haven't played it since college, but I remember liking it more than VII, which is to say it's ok.

Someone ought to finally rank the FFs once and for all.
I just finished up FF VIII after getting it off of PSN. I clocked in like 92 hours (on PSP... commute etc etc) when all was said and done, but I think I did almost everything that can be done and I did some OCD grinding for sure... I never finished VII or VIII back in the day and revisiting VIII sucked me in more than VII did. I was always a big fan of the setting and characters. For the price, it's worth checking out if you've enjoyed some other Final Fantasy stuff, but there are definitely some peculiar mechanics at work that may make it a love it or hate it kind of game. I fell on the 'love' side for sure.

But, to get back to Grandia. It is now snuggled up inside of my PSP and I'm working my way through the intro. It's already working it's charms on me. I've played about two hours and I'm definitely enjoying it more than my initial impression led me to believe I would. Really looking forward to playing some more and having it open up a bit.
I've never completed a FF game. Played the fuck out of I, IV, and VII, bits of VI, and never paid attention to the spinoffs (though Tactics looks tempting, though I'm no fan of tactical RPGs, or RTSs, for that matter). I just got Cloud back in my party before Weapon in FFVII and it's definitely the farthest I've been in the game. Having a PSP helps. I guess I'm interested in VIII just to see why the hell no one could be bothered to buy a Dreamcast on 9/9/99. Still, 100 hours of running around as an emo bitch with a gunblade. Blah.

But 80 hours for Grandia? Fuck.
VIII has the best card game, so there's that.

God, where is my glitchie (from conversion from word and Russ disliked)-filled retrospective?

DAMN YOU REVAMPS!!!!!

I liked IXs card game better.

AND FF I and II are on the iphone so yes I'll have bought my 4th version of I.
Hahaha, I remember enjoying reading that one. You truly are chud's FF guru, for better or worse.
HAHAHA.

I begged Ian to play FFI. Out of it came an awesome Late to the Party column so if that can be found, read it.

Hmmm... Squall is not too much of an emo bitch. I actually like the character. He's not overly talkative so I guess he doesn't whine enough to be an emo bitch. And the gunblade thing kind of works too. The timed button press makes the attacks feel like they have a bit more oomph behind them and he can be quite the powerhouse if you set him up that way. By the time I had gotten him his best weapon his attack stats were already maxed out so the weapon made no real difference in his attack power. But it did add a special twist to his limit break and that's probably what eased me throught he final battles.

This is true. I was more addicted to the card game than anything else when it was first released.

Wait for them to get around to FF 9. You'll be happier for it.

Everyone should at least *try* 8, though. There's stuff to like, but the logistics of getting anywhere in that game just arent worth it for me.

Then again, I'm the guy that liked X-2.

Does the version of FFVIII on PSN have an option to skip the Guardian Force animations? That was the only thing that turned me off of that game, honestly.
Card combat? Blech. Hell, I think I'll pick up that copy of Earthbound at the flea market. I rented it back in the day and never got around to buying it. Gotta love a game that's sold with the strategy guide for the boorish Americans.

It has more in common with Othello than YuGiOh, and it's addictive as hell. It's actually the one thing I did love in that game.

I'll defend it to the death. That game's the last time anyone actually has FUN with this fucking series.
