Baffling movie. I can understand its themes, but still, while watching it...the most suspenseful scene is when its protagonist is politely asked to leave an office building, to which he obliges. The dramatic pull of the movie is weakened by its attempts at realism, in depicting an ordinary family that's really, well, a bit strained, at most, throughout much of the movie. I was expecting sharper observations about corporate culture, and this pathological liar, who sleeps in cars to avoid tending to his dull, bourgeois lifestyle. Unfortunately, the film itself is as dull, and exhausting, as the universe it frames for us.
I watched it because it's placed 11th in the AV Club's top 50 movies of the past decade. But this is a bore, a kind of OK drama with solid performances. Nothing really WRONG With the movie, but ah, a pretty standard, mainstream drama from Europe, that won't offend anybody. Like Dark Blue Almost Black and The Bothersome Man, among other mid-level productions, there's a hook in the story (in this case, the story is inspired by a true one, although the truth is gory) and it's pretty alright but forgettable. Meh.
