SHOCK CORRIDOR Discussion

Ordered this based on the mentions of it by Scorsese and CHUD's own Andre Dellamorte, and I must say it was a whole big slice of awesome. Journalist fakes madness (obsession with his 'sister') to get admitted to a mental ward where he plans to find out the identity of a murderer.

The structure is simple (Johnny spends time with the three main witnesses in turn, getting clues out of them when they experience moments of sanity), but tight as a drum, there isn't an ounce of fat on this. Fuller is awesome, love the pan back and forth down the full then empty corridor, and the rainstorm scene is terrifying.

I like the internal monologue as an extension of madness- how many of us think and speak different things, and how close is that to hearing voices or being mad? Where is the line?

Great lines in this- 'Nymphos!', 'Let's get him before he marries my daughter!', 'Bigotry for breakfast and ignorance for supper',
and it's a movie with a lot on it's mind as well as being a thriller, as it seems to be how men, and by extension America, are being driven mad by hatred and violence.

Loved it. I've seen this and The Big Red One- what Fuller should I be getting next?

In no real order: Pickup on South Street, Fixed Bayonettes, Naked Kiss, Park Row, Forty Guns would be the top of the pops. Underworld USA, White Dog, House of Bamboo, Crimson Kimono, and Merril's Marauders are second tier awesome. I like almost everything the man's done, though.

Man, there's just something about Fixed Bayonets. Like this weird universe where I can tell it's a movie yet it feels like you're right there in rear guard action with these guys.

I don't care how this sentence comes out, but this is the movie that changed the way I felt about Richard Baseheart.

Shock Corridor is greatness, too, but it's been too long.

Thanks Dre, can't wait to get stuck in.

I watched this last night and thought it was pretty great, it was a prison movie, only with mental patients. The individual stories of each patient were amazingly well acted, the black man who believes he's the leader of the KKK, the patient who still thinks he's in the civil war, just tragic stories of alienation from different perspectives.
Johnny encountering those Nymphos was horrific, they surrounded him like velociraptors. Fuller really knows how to stage a climax, complete with amazing fistfight.

Yeah, much love for this one. Out of all the Fuller films I've seen thus far (only four at this time, but I plan on changing that soon), this one is my favorite. As Nathan said, the scene with the nymphos is pretty incredible (just that close up on Johnny as he thinks, "NYMPHOS!"), as is the reveal with the kid who thinks he's Grand Wizard of the KKK (I swear Chappelle has seen this movie). Also, Larry Tucker as a guy who thinks he is Pagliacci! God damn, this movie rules.
