8.8 Earthquake hits Chile

To our Chilean chewers, hope everything is okay. I doubt posting is high on the list of the priorities.
For informational purposes, here is a link to the U.S. Geological Survey page on the quake.

And, yeah, Chilean (and, according to CNN, Argentinean perhaps) Chewer roll call when you can, guys. Be safe.
Feral was online here ten minutes ago, so I assume he's fine. (EDIT: He is.)

But now Hawaii is facing tsunamis.
I've hear that the tsunami generated by the quake now imperils a third of the globe!

PS I mentioned this to a coworker and her response was "My there sure is alot of odd weather lately!"

I did not have the heart to mention that an earth quake is not a type of weather.

EDIT: PPS, my thoughts are with you Chile Chewers. I you are safe and doing ok.

There's also Ryoken.

So a 7.0 hits near Okinawa, Japan yesterday and now this. And then there was Haiti last month. That "world is over in 2012" stuff is looking mighty interesting now.
Yeah hope you guys can post an "I'm OK" when after you are done doing all the important stuff (taking shelter, checking on your family, helping the rescue/relief efforts, etc) and you have an internet connection.

Not necessarily (Yeah, I know you're joking), Japan and Chile are HUGE earthquake hotspots. There was a huge one in Iran sometime ago and there was a massive earthquake in China a couple of years ago. Granted, I'm not a geologist.

It amazes me how lucky this town can be sometimes.
I don't know ryoken's IRL and cellulars are down right here.
Everything is kind fine around my house. Minor fractures inside the house.
I won't lie. The reason I wasn't more scared is I knew shit about quakes until 2 years ago. Now I'm just reading the Lost thread and watching Arrested Development. It was really heavy down here.

Thx Phil .

Sadly, It's like a fucking huge balancing pole. I heard about the quake on Japan and was kinda worried before this.

I live near the downtown area and the people were outside their homes for a few minutes but that was all. I went down waiting for a nightmare but It was peaceful', in a weird sense. No lights but no alarms or scream or nothing like that.
It was South from here but here it was 8.8 too. As I said it was really weird when I went out and this big city was without lights.

Yeah, I just came across that. The map they had on CNN showed the epicenter coming from the north. That, or I really screwed up looking at the map.

Unless we (FL, America's wang) end up underwater and are unable to get online ourselves. I hope that Ed Harris gets shit straight with those aliens STAT.

Glad you're safe, Feral.
Guys this is not shill but Huff has a great coverage as I said local media sucks.
Thanks Darkmite.

Say what you want about big bro Google but they pulled an app for finding people really soon. The net is perfect while the cells sucks.

The Tsunami alert is bad news. The aftershocks here are big too (We had one minutes ago).
Take care, guys.
I think the news channels were hoping for more damage in Hawaii.

Maybe next time guys.
Glad you're ok, Feral, and I'm glad the damage in Hawaii wasn't as bad as I thought. I was watching CNN expecting a monster wave to come roaring ashore, but so far, so good.
Glad you're OK in your long, skinny neck of the Earth. Man, 8.8, that's huge (I'm just going to let that simmer).

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquak...gest_world.php

The Earth's mantle hates you, Chile. The 1960 quake in Chile was nearly 10 times stronger(!!!!!). Looks like they're likely safe from another massive one for 40 years or so. I'd suggest looking into moving before then.

Also, for the Chicken Littles out there (like my mom): note how often those massive earthquakes are followed by other massive quakes within a few months (and this list considers anything below 8.5 too feeble to count). It appears not only not unusual to have large quakes bunched together, but actually normal and predictable.

The relatively low death toll shows how important modernized construction is. It's pretty amazing that this quake in Chile was nearly 100 times stronger than the one in Haiti, yet so many fewer people were killed.
So Ryoken is still MIA?
Be safe, guys.

The level of Troy Maclurism on the news is impressive. A lady in a rich neighborhood was talking in front of the camera, complaining about the building structure, while in the background a TV was falling down two floors with the aid of ropes. People is really scarred and this dicks are securing a fucking TV. It was really bizarre.

Sadly, the death toll is rising. A tsunami affected one island far from the coast.
I am very lucky the area were I live the net and electricity came really fast. Maybe ryoken is in the area without lights.

I am really worried about some friend who is far from Santiago. There are no phones over there.

Here I am with 5 more people so I am glad I moved recently as I posted on the achievements thread.

ETA: Maclurism #2, Reporter: "So, excuse me for asking this, but does this mean we are now 8 meters closer to Eastern Island?"
ETA 2: The airport looks like a old school cheap set of a Sci-fi films full of stuff hanging down.
According to Yahoo! News, Japan has received it's first minor waves from the Chile earthquake. Hawaii is apparently safe from any kind of tsunami.
Glad you're ok, Feral. Hope other folks are too.
Feral ----> here's looking at you. Godspeed.
Thx chewers.
Yesterday I have no internet connection. South from here it's a disaster.

Ryoken is fine.
Sorry everyone for the delay; power and phone was out for almost 3 days, but more importantly, my family and loved ones are all fine and out of danger, and the only casualties in my family had been material.
Im glad to see Feral is well too, and Id like to thank him and everyone else for their concern about us and our country.
South is a nightmare straight out of a bad post apocalyptic flick right now...looting, arson (fires are being set to distract cops/army from looting) and robbery are common.
The government fucked up big time by not declaring martial law and giving the army control of the area; i now its not time for politics, but the political consequences for this are going to be huge...there is no way the left party ever recovers from this, and PiƱera's administration is going to have a HUGE amount of problems to deal with.
I'll say this, the looters stealing anything that isn't food, medical supplies or shelter materials are a disgrace.
A fucking 3-4 story high shopping store (which does not sell food or any relief items) was looted, burned down and it collapsed.

Even more fucked up, science reports are starting to gather proof that the quake might have tilted earth's axis in 8 centimeters.

Good to hear you guys are okay.

Dont worry, all my family and loved ones are safe and sound, and we couldn't care less about the material losses in the face of how lucky we have been to have not experienced the pain or loss of any dear or close persons.
Asside from the quake, the only other danger was that the electric pole next to my house FUCKING exploded.
Ive already done everything i can, and tomorrow i must go to work and endure and rebuilt, as our people will.
thanks again to everyone for their caring and kind sentiments.

EDIT: Ringo Dingo (my westie pup) is safe and sound as well...i just grabbed him and ran outside to the garden with my family when the quake hit.

Edit 2: while i was up writing this, Ringo stole my seat...guess hes back to highs spirits.
Serious question - was Ringo Dingo acting at all out of the ordinary before the quake hit did you notice?

He was sleeping as a log, so he started barking just a couple second shorts before it hit.
He has barked in advance of the following aftershocks, though.
he truly is a good dog, and he's been getting a lot of petting and treats these days as he has been one of my few companions through this weekend.

PS: Also, Comic Book/dvd/videogame Collection + Quake = one huge mess.
PS2: But knowing everyone i know and love are okay and that my home stills stands = gratefulness.

Little late to the game, but glad you guys are okay. Everyone's checked in now? :P

Both Feran and I are ok, but ihave no idea if theres ny other chilean chewers.

A friend of mine was awake thanks to her dog who warned her. I would seriously consider buying a dog if I wasn't a foreigner here. And puppies are expensive too.
A mother's friend realized her son was dating a girl with a child thanks to national TV. A reporter talked with a neighbor and she spread the news talking about him and his spouse.

Haha, ouch. Nice way to air dirty laundry, lady.
