DeepStar Six

So many of the disasters in this flick are caused by human error or poor judgment, it's ridiculous. And that's even before the monster gets in.

I love this cheesy flick (and most of the "monster from the deep attacks!" subgenre) directed by the father of FRIDAY THE 13TH. Surprising, the pretty biology expert (Nia Peoples) bites it fairly quickly.

Lots of memorable deaths, including Matt "have you seen my lower half" McCoy, Ferrer's "suicide", and death by C2 tipped spear-gun.

Greg Evigan is truly the 2nd rate, but goody2shoes (AKA non-evil), mustachioed twin of Biehn's psycho from THE ABYSS (released around the same time, see also: LEVIATHAN).

Sure it's no DEEP RISING, but what is?
I miss Carolco.

I like the set pieces used in this one. Much more than those in the Abyss and Leviathan.

DeepStar Six and Leviathan are the same movie in my mind. I don't know where one begins and the other ends. That being said, I loved both of these movies growing up. The bottom-half missing scene is still pretty vivid in my mind. DeepStar has one of the coolest looking VHS covers I've ever seen (Right up there with Split Second and Day of the Dead if memory serves). I would hang a poster of the legless diver right now, or at least get a minature one for my fishtank.

LEVIATHAN = genetic experiment/mutation
DEEP STAR SIX = giant McCoy-leg-eating lobster

BOTH = underwater awesomeness and both feature actors from ROBOCOP, so I can see the confusion

A foreign DVD decided the soggy "actors" were a better selling point. WTF? Why are they looking out at us in surprise? The monster's behind them.

Behold!!! Percy "JAWS trailer" Rodriguez's awesome trailer VO: http://www.garagetv.be/video-galerij..._six_trl_.aspx

Too bad my DVD is only fullscreen.

I remember thinking DeepStar Six was ok. Granted this was in 1999, and it was the LIVE vhs that I rented from Hollywood Video. Once it's properly released on dvd I'll check it out again.

I've always been more a fan of Leviathan. The actors, and fx are pretty awesome. Nothing beats a mutagen in the Vodka.

Is Deep Star the one where Miguel Ferrer accidently starts an Atomic explosion?

It's been almost a decade since I saw this or Leviathan.
Hmmm, so then I take it LEVIATHAN is the one where someone has a mouth in the palm of their hand? Or is that another 80s underwater creature feature altogether? I though that and the halved diver were in the same movie but I guess I misremembered. Either way, both scenes really scared me when I saw whatever movies they're from on TV as a kid.

The mouth on the hand belonged to Hector Elizondo in Leviathan. Yeah, that scene is really creepy. The overall amphibian creatures are cool to look at, but I wish they did more scenes like that and with Daniel Stern and Lisa Eilbacher mutating. A bunch of Lovecraftian creatures running around the mining station would have been cooler than the huge monsters.

Then again we wouldn't have priceless dialogue like "Say ah, motherfucker!"

I'm glad I'm not the only one here who remembers these two films as one.

Both flicks contain a "haul ass to the surface only to be followed by the monster" ending, but LEVIATHAN is much more influenced by ALIEN/S than DEEPSTAR...

LEVIATHAN features:
- blue collar mining crew (DEEPSTAR is Navy) who discovers a derelict where the infection is located
- "evil" corporation
- flame-throwers
- creature who acts like a parasite/absorber, taking on features of its host
- self-destruct countdown climax

DS6 has a beast that just straight up wants to eat (as all giant prawn should), but I think that it uses the dangerous deep sea environment more effectively as a threat. Between the massive leaks and decompression mishaps.

How the 3 at the end of LEVIATHAN make it to the surface so quickly without the bends is beyond me. And (RIP Winston) the deep sea tentacled barracuda man in LEVIATHAN reminded me of the Jabberwocky rubber suit in the 80s Wonderland TV mini-series. And since it can regenerate, the JAWS-ripoff bomb in mouth only helped them escape, right? It's multiplying as we speak?

Six-Pack (Stern) is so cartoonishly horny in this. "Sit on my face" he says to the pinup taped to his bunk ceiling.

The scores to both films (and DEEP RISING as well) are actually pretty great IMO.

Like this POS?

Or the DVD where they added the monster as a reflection?

The original poster was better, right Miss Pays?

Ah, the age old (dating all the way back to early 89!) Deepstar Six vs Leviathan debate. I'm not sure if it will ever be properly decided in our lifetimes.

I'm going to take my stand, I prefer Deepstar Six. Leviathan has the "cooler" monster, but really loses points for the terrible ending.

On the other hand, Greg Evigan gets top billing in Deepstar, so my expectations were never very high to begin with.

Confirmed LEVIATHAN fan, here. While I don't really see it as a versus thing, I'm more drawn to the Cosmatos film almost totally for the cast. Weller's tired quality (employed again to great effect in SCREAMERS) rubbing Crenna's "can't be bothered" phone-it-inism is a real highlight in this for me.

Favorite exchange, though:
"I realize you've all gone through hell-"
"Gone? Bitch! We're still here!"

At a con years ago, I had Ernie Hudson autograph a pic with his line. He couldn't stop laughing.

"How Long Can You Hold Your Breath?" is a tagline worthy of 'Alien' standards...
Pity it was only used on the teaser posters.

...also, no love for 1990's

AKA 'Endless Descent'?
I can't remember if it's this move or Leviathan, but in one of the deep sea monster flicks, there's a gratuitous shot of a nude Playboy centerfold page that screams "WE COULDN'T GET ANYONE TO TAKE THEIR SHIRT OFF, SO HERE ARE SOME BOOBS."
There seems to be a decent R2 release of this movie that's anamorphic from Momentum that seems to be OOP, which is too bad because I would have been willing to import the DVD.

Never saw Endless Descent.

When I was a kid, DS6 was my favorite movie for a year or so. Lots of fun, cool little death scenes. Ferrer's impression of an M-80 was fantastic. I saved a special place in my hear for Leviathan too. Why do we have to choose one? Isn't there room on the Underwater Mount Rushmore for both?

Ha yeah, I made mention of that... It's LEVIATHAN.

Yes, the R2 release from the UK seems to be OOP. But, you're in luck because the Germans have done you a solid and their R2 release is anamorphic. And it's only EUR 6.97. That's less than ten bucks in American dollars. They also have a widescreen Action Jackson for less than EUR 5.00.

Dammit! I just ordered Split Second from Amazon Germany. If I had known they had a decent version of Deep Star Six I would have added that as well. The shipping costs are too freaking high.
Can't you cancel the first order?

It shipped three days ago. I actually should have it in a few days.

Split Second is shit.

Stopped by the Salvation Army a block away yesterday, and what did I spy?

Deepstar Six on VHS, for $1.99.

This may be true but the poster was really rad in the video store when I was 11 years old. "Holy shit! Is Hauer going to fight Venom in this movie?!"
Bump out of spite. Still better than Leviathan.
Keith, DeepStar Six doesn't have a pair like Leviathan.

That Split Second poster is awesome. HBO needs to license it out or re-release it. It warrants it dammit!
