Deadly Premonition (XBox)

After hearing by chance about this low budget, quirky survival horror title, I find myself totally intrigued. Visually, it looks like a PS1-era game and the reviews are extremely divided, but the praise from the cult followers it's picking up has me curious. Looks like it's for people who want a surreal mystery counterpart of Killer 7 or No More Heroes.

Twin Peaks-inspired? IGN hates it? $20? Shit, I'm going to have to buy this for myself...

Edit: Turns out it is Region locked

Damn shame too, looks like a mix of Shenmue (that open world that Alan Wake might have taken out), Silent Hill, Detective stuff and Twin Peaks.

One can hope it gets a EU release, along with Way of the Samurai 3.

IGN gave it a 2.0 rating, saying: "Deadly Premonition is the definition of a system seller. Once you play it, you'll want to go sell your system" *Rimshot!*

Though I guess it's possible that the publisher didn't give IGN their payoff, so take it for what it's worth

Picked it up and made it through several hours. The funny thing is that all of the criticisms are right on but I'm still compelled to keep playing. You can validly take issues with any number of aspects of the game and their execution but the entertainment value is there.

One of my favorite elements so far is the fact that the main character is obviously insane but also a movie geek. To pass time during long drives, you have the option of having him discuss films with his ever-present imaginary friend.

This is the years best game in my opinion. Alan Wake is poo in comparison.
SWERY, the director of DP says he would love to make a sequel:

Bring it on. I'd buy it on day 1.

It's certainly a cult video game, if such a thing existed before now.

This game is delightfully insane. I really need to get back to it. While being seemingly ho-hum and nothing special there IS something oddly compelling about it. Not for everybody but absolutely PERFECT for some.

Bioshock 2 wasn't making much of an impact on me, so I started playing this instead and...holy shit I love this game. I don't care that it looks and plays like an early PS2-era game, I'm far more entertained by this. I found myself sitting in the car just so I could finish listening to some of York's conversations with Zach about 80's movies, I love that the sheriff won't interrupt his squats to focus on a murder investigation until I find his workout buddy, and that my reward for doing so was a trading card of a turkey sandwich and stern warning that we were even.

Well, as luck would have it, I found an auction on the local trade site for a PAL version of this game. Naturally I jumped at the chance as the price was under half that of a regular retail game.

Barely gotten started as I've only just begun Chapter 2. And I'm loving this game, I don't know why but it just clicks. The QTE don't even bother me in those Clocktower like sequences. This setting and how go about the investigation is a treat for me. Plus York is... utterly loony.

Exactly what I was thinking, and not a bad thing to be.

And having tried a sinner sandwich... actually pretty good.
