Countdown to Sony lawsuit...

My 60GB is working just fine now. Just switched it on, and saw 2/28, gave my friend a call and he said just to go to the date and time settings to fix it via the internet.

Problem all fixed. All those idiots posting those stupidass videos about the 360 being better now can go fuck a duck.

What I'm trying to figure out is Sony says its a clock error due to it being the first even number year in the decade thats not a leap year.

How do you not have the correct leap year programmed in a calander system?

So I need to bring my PS3 somewhere that has Internet, and just update my clock via the Internet and that fixes the issue?

Did you have it hooked up to the internet when it crashed? If not, I'd imagine it would be fine.

Based on how the internet was still able to run on my old system when the network was down (the scrolling announcements were still on and I was able to run my Netflix instant watch), I'm thinking it was all related more to how the clock setting related directly to the PSN.

From the official Playstation blog:

Quote:
Playstation Network Service Restored

We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally.

If the time displayed on the XMB is still incorrect, users are able to adjust time settings manually or via the internet. If we have new information, we will update you through the PlayStation.Blog or PlayStation.com.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Good job, Sony. Never let it fucking happen again.

I don't own a PS3, so this didn't affect me in that sense, but it led to a series of hilarious tweets from Slater, so I'm glad it happened. To wit:

Oh shit, my Playstation 3 just attained sentience and robbed a gas station. This is the worst glitch ever.

Now it's drinking a Mad Dog 20/20 and downloading a bunch of Toby Keith songs with my iTunes account. This isn't cool, Sony.

My PS3 demands to know why black people are allowed to say the n-word but sentient video game systems aren't. Great, now it's racist too

Fucking Playstation 3 wants to have a serious talk about my Thetan levels. Strutting around the house, bragging that it's already an OT3.

Scientologist PS3 invited Nancy Cartwright over. She keeps saying Eat My Shorts, Man, then holding out her hand for a tip. This sucks.

Okay, I don't want to sound dense, so I want to check one more time.

1. My PS3 wasn't connected to the internet, but crashed all the same.

2. Now that Sony has fixed the problem, do I need to connect to the internet to fix it? I ask because I don't have a way to get internet access on my PS3 at my house. I'll need to cart it to a friend's.

Also, did you guys lose any data?

It's been fun watching the nerd rage and hand-wringing on some other forums over this. Really glad this happened while I was at work.

I've seen a few console-only gamers suddenly bring up DRM, as though it's a newfound horror that needs to be addressed. Tragic.

From what I've read the bug was internal. Your PS3 thought it was Feb 29 even though it was Mar 1. However, despite the root cause being internal, the symptoms manifested themselves when dealing with PSN, particularly trophies.

My best guess at what has happened is:

a) There has been no patch
b) it simply disappeared when it hit March 2nd GMT
c) They may have patched something server side to accomodate for the PSN errors.
d) They'll probebly send out something in the next 12 months to deal with it before 2011.

As far as I can tell, I've had no lasting damages to data or trophies.

Being a programmer as some other folks have mentioned they also are/were, coding date issues is a major pain in the ass, because there are always situations where "this is the case 99.99% of the time", and as soon as you miss that .01%, it will inevitably happen, and you look like a fool. I still have a sign that another programmer gave me years ago before he left, and any IT workers will understand it--"No one knows what I do until I don't do it."

It was a problem, it made life not so nice for a lot of people for less than 24 hours, but it's fixed. That's actually a pretty good response time for such a large IT department. Of course, I'm not a hard-core gamer so I didn't lose my mind over it being down, and I don't think it affected my machine. I still think, compared to the cluster that is the red rings of death, this is a lot smaller scale than that. At least they were able to fix theirs via the internet instead of the users having to send in their machines and be without it for weeks at a time.

If it really is a leap year issue - and I do doubt it's as simple as that, frankly - then that's just depressing for Sony. Calendar functions are basic school project stuff. A google search yields countless free, perfectly functional C++ date algorithms that account for leap years or Hindu Lunar/Julian conversions or whatever else you might need.

Why would it be any more complicated than that? If the problem corrected itself, which it seems to have done, without any input from Sony, then why not just chalk it down to something as stupidly simple?
post #68 of 71
Because it's hard to imagine a non-student fucking up a leap year. It's not like the Gregorian calendar is some new thing programmers are still wrapping their heads around.
post #69 of 71
It's not unheard of. Microsoft had a similar problem with the Zune a few years back. And again, if the error began at midnight GMT on the 1st and sorted itself out at midnight GMT on the 2nd without any update or patch, what other conclusion is there to draw?
post #70 of 71
I don't know. I'm expressing shocked disbelief, because this dumb, 4-line thing will tell you that 2010 isn't a leap year:

if(year%400 ==0 || (year%100 != 0 && year%4 == 0))
{
printf("Year %d is a leap year",year);
}
else
{
printf("Year %d is not a leap year",year);
}

There is nothing to download. It's ok to turn on your PS3, if the time and date is off, just set it manually. No need to do the internet sync.

No lost data here.
