Soothe the Savage Beast

Thread Starter
Thought about posing this in Songs That Are Owning You thread, but it's a bit more specific. What tracks do you go to when you need to relax? Obviously, all of us around here celebrate Michael Bolton's entire catalogue, but other than that, what are the most soothing bits of music you know?

I spent the last month studying for the bar exam, and every night I would invariably get fed up trying to memorize 300 pages of bullshit. But I developed a playlist that I could put on that wouldn't overly distract me, but made it possible to get through another hour or two of tedium, and would send me off to sleep just fine if it came to it. Went something like this:

Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl by Broken Social Scene.

A Slow Dance by Explosions In The Sky.

All Things Beautiful by Nick Cave.

Njosnavelin by Sigur Ros.

Together We Will Live Forever by Clint Mansell.

A few others migrated through, but those are the staples. What do you listen to when you need to slow down and relax?

When I want something soothing in the background, either to help me relax or provide a kind of 'white noise' when I'm working, I usually turn to Al Di Meola or Ottmar Liebert. I don't have access to youtube (it's blocked at work), but albums that come to mind:

Al Di Meola:
albums:
- Elegant Gypsy
- Casino
- Acoustic Anthology

Ottmar Liebert:
albums:
- Nouveau Flamenco
- Solo Para Ti

Mogwai is pretty much the epitome of this thread for me, More recently, though, Buckethead's Real Diamond In The Rough has been my go-to comedown album.

Thanks for the reminder, Justin...I've been meaning to pick up some Buckethead.

Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Volume Two"
and
William Basinki's "The Disintegration Loops"

"The Disintegration Loops" kind of shift from "soothing" to "existential dread" the longer you listen though. Brilliant anyway.

Light's "The Listening". Because you've got nothing left to live for if you don't find the melodious sound of a keytar soothing.

Julee Cruise's Floating Into the Night and The Fountain soundtrack.

Most of the music referenced in this thread does not come from a happy place-more haunting than soothing. Except for Light and Buckethead.

For this kind of thing, I tend toward bossa nova and West Coast jazz: Stan Getz, Joao Gilberto, Charlie Byrd, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chet Baker, Vince Guaraldi, Cal Tjader, etc.

I thought this thread was about a band called Soothe The Savage Beast and thought it was a cool stoner rock band name. Can never tell what's a band name these days.

Anyways, when I was younger and dabbling in drum & bass, I'd put on Red Snapper's Prince Blimey to mellow me out.
