Someone explain Phantasm to me.

I saw the first one and really liked it but was confused after watching. I saw 3 and 4 on TV a couple weeks ago. The ending of the 4th one didn't make much sense to me unless they're saying the whole thing was a dream.

What was "real" and what was a "dream" in the whole series? Was it all in Mike's head or was it real?

I can't comment on the particulars, but the feeling I had after watching the third and fourth films long ago was one of a "Coscarelli is just dragging this out, and making it up as he goes along".

I need to revisit said sequels, cause I believe in giving films a second chance, but after the second film, it just felt like more of a directionless cashgrab than a storyline to be invested in.

I think what you don't understand is that you fucked up and need to see Phantasm 2 immediately. You'll promptly stop caring about the others.

Do you guys think Phantasm could even be made today? I have a hard time seeing the modern corportate studios taking a chance on a film like that. Even at a tiny budget.

Only as a reboot. Otherwise no.

Was any of the financing through a major studio anyway? I thought the first one was made through shear will and then rights were bought later.

What does it all mean? The answer could lie in the title...

phan·tasm (fan-taz-em) "a dream, a nightmare, a sense of unreality, something in a place where it shouldn't be". ~Don Coscarelli (director)

Well put. The appeal of the Phantasm series (well, the first two) is an easier score to settle:
