Jonsi (Sigur Ros) - Go

go contains nine songs amassed from the large pool of songs written by jónsi during his many years with sigur rós. the album is sung in english and icelandic, and was co-produced by jónsi, his partner alex somers and peter katis (the national, interpol).

when he began working on go, jónsi initially thought he would be making a low-key, acoustic album until, as he says, “somewhere along the line, it just sort of exploded.” that explosion resulted in sheer aural fireworks. not a straight ahead pop record, nor rock, folk, ambient or electronic, it encompasses all of these to create an expansive musical palette that’s been brought to life by jónsi alongside a number of free-spirited collaborators.

chief among these is nico muhly, the philip glass protégé who is renowned for his work with björk, antony & the johnsons, bonnie “prince” billy and grizzly bear. muhly has arranged all the songs on go, bringing strings, brass and woodwind to dance playfully alongside his offbeat piano playing. add into the mix the percussive genius of samuli kosminen, whose original drumming powers many of the songs along, and you have a sonic landscape that bears little relation to anything else around today, yet explodes from the speakers with sheer happiness and wonder, wide-eyed and eager to be heard.
The first single? "Boy Lilikoi" is pretty amazing but it sounds weird hearing him singing in English (yes I know he did on the last album but it was still unintelligible). I cannot wait to pick this up and hopefully catch a show.

Boy Lilikoi is great, but Go Do is fucking awesome. I've been listening to the same 4 tracks for weeks now and this migh be my most awaited release of the year with Arcade Fire. So great I bought tickets for his show based on these 4 tracks.

Pure fucking joy. It definitely takes the happier tone of the last CD and cranks it up a notch.

It leaked.

It's glorious. God I'm buying that.

So, uh, yeah, this album is...incredible.

This is the super exuberant, energetic album I was hoping Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust would be after I heard "Gobbledigook" for the first time (not that that is a bad album, just not what I was hoping it would be). It's awesome.

Though I'd still like to hear a more stripped down, acoustic-driven album from him or Sigur Ros

Jonsi did play a couple of acoustical version of his songs. It's on the net somewhere.

'Animal Arithmetic' is owning me. If that song doesn't put you in a good mood than you're a very miserable person to begin with.

The entire thing is great. Even the slower songs are owning me.

Yes. Yes indeed Mr. Savage. You were so right about the Vampire Weekend before I listened to it. And you've struck gold yet again with this new disc.

After a few days of listening to this album, I can confidently claim that it is the best album of the young decade and will likely stay atop as one of my favorites for a very long time. It is absolutely glorious and has left me in awe.

Favorite so far is "Tornado" which contains an emotional (perfect) balance between soft and loud music.

Seriously this album is like a shot of pure joy, it's just an amazing piece of work. Still absolutely head over heels in love with Go Do but I'm starting to really adore Tornado and Animal Arithmetic.

Still getting to know it, but I'm really liking it. Like Dan said above, it elaborates (and improves) on the upbeat vibe of the last Sigur Ros album, while sounding decidedly not like a Sigur Ros album.

...still loving the album but wanted to know if anyone was able to catch any live shows? Sigur Ros are amazing live so I expect the same from Jonsi.

Here's a short article from the LA Times about his performance at Coachella this past weekend.

Quote:
...But it wasn't until the end, when he sang plainly over an ebb of white noise, that things felt dangerous. While he repeated a simple, incantatory vocal line, the band escalated the song with a busy drum corps and a deep-well bass. Guitars poured in on the margins, then overtook the song, and finally crescendoed into one of the most pristine yet violent walls of sound that Coachella's ever seen.

It blindsided the stunned crowd, yet felt a little apropos -- Iceland's on quite a roll for geologic-level intense events right now.
