The Van (1977)

Got this flick in the Mill Creek "Too Cool For School Collection" and was pleasantly surprised by it. It's a teen sex comedy, but it's also surprisingly sweet as the main character initially wants to just get laid, but then realizes he should focus on the one girl that's been in front of him the whole time. The van itself kicks major ass and has tons of stuff in it, water bed, refrigerator, super speakers. It's a major piece of equipment, and when they go to a van show/racing area, it reminds one that once it was cool to have a van.

The scene where his water bed gets popped is pretty damn hilarious, and the Sammy Johns tunes "Chevy Van" and "Hey Mr. Dreamer" are infectious.

They used to run this on Channel 5 in NY over and over. The lead is the ginger who wanted to date Marcia Brady even after her nose got smashed with a football.

I found it on VHS like 15 years ago and they had edited random shots of girls in bikinis into it.

They never use 'fun truckin'!' as a tagline anymore.

Yeah, I think the copy in the set is the "uncut" version. I don't remember those random scenes, so I'll have to see it again. I'm only halfway through the set, but thus far it's the best of the lot. Most of the rest are pretty crappy, and only worth background noise. My Tutor does have Crispin Glover being pretty funny. Aside from that, that flick was boring.

Don't forget Danny DeVito in a supporting role!

The title song must have been a big hit, because I hear it often on my local oldies station (and also "Sky High," the theme to THE MAN FROM HONG KONG).
