BIG GIANT MEGA Portal 2 ending spoilers, but I think I've had this tab open for a good hour and I'm still not tired of it

I'd volunteer Trevor, but I have the feeling our timezones are not very compatible.

For once it would be nice to have a story about evil computers in which there is at least one AI that doesn't at some point betray the Hero or Heroin, as it is wheatley's "surprise" betrayal wasn't a surprise for me.

I don't know if Portal 2, specifically, would be better off if it were that story.  Don't you think that would take away from the loneliness of the solo game's theme?  It seems essential to me that the sidekick is completely unreliable.  It reinforces the tension when the second sidekick asks Chell to trust it.

Wheatley's betrayal isn't the surprise. His genuine apology at the end is. That's a far stronger character beat than either AI being good or evil.

You know the spoilers show up when you scroll over the latest post in thread before clicking on the thread?  Pointing it out and making sure noone else see's it :D

If anybody else bought this on PC (Steam) and is having the same issues I've had (I literally can't play more than 30 seconds without the game freezing and can't get past "The Courtesy Call" because of it).  I've had a ticket in with Valve since the release date.  Had preordered the game and have done everything their techs have asked me to do.  This weekend I asked for a refund and shockingly they have agreed.  I love Valve, but I've NEVER had them refund a game that's been downloaded already.  It might have something to do with the fact that the pirated version apparently works for everybody that downloads it while I can't play the game I paid for because of their DRM apparently.  I think 2 weeks is ample time to allow them a fix but I am pretty excited that I didn't just eat a $45 mistake.

Are there sound problems? As in glitched, repeating sound? If so, try playing it with the task manager open. I got that problem a couple of times and opening the task manager and going back into the game fixed it immediately.

Both valid points, I just think I wasn't feeling those story beats as strongly as you guys were because I really wanted to ditch both characters and go it alone with no sidekick. It's not that Wheatley or GLaDOS aren't written well and have good story arcs to them. Its the fact that this is a Game and when I play video games there is always and element of roleplay my mind wants to add. I feel myself wanting to make certain story decisions and if i could of I would have ditched any A.I.s I came across as they all, in the context of being from aperture Labs, would be untrustworthy. Not being able to make this decision irked me, and kept me from loosing myself in the story.

Also, after playing though the game again I'm correcting myself about there being no Rat-Man holes. I found a few, though I'm still not sure if they serve any purpose towards the story this time around. All the writing inside seem like crazy talk and there are no clear warnings in the holes I've found. I understand that Valve wanted to avoid creating Memes this time around, but some little scrawl like similar in nature to "the Cake is a Lie" in the first game would have been nice. Anyone find anything different?

I also like to reiterate that I still enjoyed the game immensely, I'm just trying to figure out why it didn't click as strongly with me as the first one.

Finished single-player today. It was everything I wanted it to be. Guess there's still co-op (which I've started with a friend) and DLC. But it's not the same. I feel GLaDOS withdrawal coming on.
And you guys are right: this game is easier from a twitch/reflex perspective. As far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing. Valve was smart to replace those annoying floating energy balls from the first game with Portal 2's laser beams. I hated those fucking energy balls. You could have a puzzle mentally solved, but it would still take a half-hour to get the portals perfectly placed (and in time) for those balls to travel to their correct destination.

Probably just because it's a sequel.  I think it might be the best possible sequel imaginable to the original and it's objectively better than the original in several ways.  But the surprise and sense of discovery is irretrievably gone.  Portal is one of the biggest sleeper hits I can remember.  You just can't do that twice, that's all.

I know. Just some part of me wishes that there were more paths to the story this time around.

Just finished it tonight, what a fantastic game.  Had exactly the correct length and difficulty scale...I did give up and resort to a walkthrough for one puzzle, and afterwords slapped myself on the head for missing something so obvious.  My only caveat is that some of the more open portions in the middle of the game seemed to come down to "find the tiny white square in this map where you can place your portal".  A handful of these sections cost me a decent amount of time and were the only parts where the game seemed to drag a bit.

Took me about six hours to finish. Was kinda cold towards Portal 1 and ended up adoring this, just loved 95% of the game. The only irksome moments were trundling from chamber to chamber during the Gel sections. It often felt like I was just parsing a room for Portal spots rather than problem solving.

Still I loved the story in this one.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Just little things like the difference between Modern Aperture and Cave Johnson's levels, with the brass elevators and old fashioned safety signs. I also like how the game organically told the story of Cave Johnson's rise and fall, his test subjects starting off as astronauts and soldiers and him then having to hire tramps and finally test his own employees as he bankrupted the company. Just really great story telling.

Yeah, Valve's writing team kicks ridiculous amounts of ass.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

When GladOS joined in on Cave's "lemons" speech and the whole Aperture/Cave Johnson/Caroline/GladOS story cliked I was surprised both by the revelation and by the quality of its execution.

This is my first time chiming in, but I beat Portal 2 a few days after it came out...and start to finish, it's pretty much perfect.  Valve's polish is unmatched.  And that writing...I really think this will go down as the best, or at least top 3, in terms of writing in 2011.  It's the sharpest, funniest game I think i've ever played.  Stephen Merchant and JK Simmons were god-like in their delivery.  And the puzzles were never too hard or too easy--just that perfect balance in between.  This is THE best game to be released so far in 2011, even though L.A. Noire is a little over a week away from kicking us in the ass.

I absolutely adored this game. I love the development of the story, my only problem is I'm insatiable and want endless amounts of Portal. Be it more game, or even more story. Does anyone know if there is more to it than just what you get in both games and the "Lab Rat" comic? Like if you get more back story playing through Half-Life or if it's just kind of set in the same universe and there are just mentions of it?

Just beat the story last night, I like the way they slip the information in before the very end so it all ties together, I didn't even think about it until afterwards.

I'm just playing through the single player again to soak up the majesty of it all.

I've been playing it on Xbox 360, and haven't done any of the Co-Op yet, so feel free to add my gamertag: Tigeroovy and we'll think with some portals.

Never played Portal 1 for that long.  Just finished Portal 2.  Fun experience!  The voice-work is so damned fantastic.  I had to resort to online walkthrough videos for about 3 or 4 of the puzzles.  I don't really regret it.  I really think I would've been completely stuck otherwise.  Most of the time, I was just stuck on one mode of thinking too long.  I think there was one where I simply couldn't find a small surface to shoot a portal onto.

Heads up - Valve just posted a link for a free soundtrack download of Portal 2's music. They also posted 6 ringtones that you can download (for free!), provided you have an Android or iPhone.

I love Valve so much.

I'm a hardcore gamer ... and the budget is kinda tight. Has anyone here played Portal 2? Is it a game worth getting or should I just rent it?

No one here has played it. You're probably a little too hardcore for it anyway.

Thanks for the heads up!!

Has anyone not touched the co-op yet? I'd love to meet up and go through the calibration level to get the achievement for that. Let me know!

Wow, you must be reading my mind - I was going to post the exact same thing yesterday. Anyone that hasn't went through co-op, hit me up too!

I haven't even gotten to try the co-op since the PSN has been down.

Just got this through GameFly. Can't wait to get started! This thread just got me that much more amped up to play!

Neither have I. Shoot me an invite if you want to give it a shot!

Cool.  I'll do that once I get back onto PSN.  I still haven't made a new password for my account.  Can I do that through the PS3 or do I have to do it from their website?  Because the website's link for it isn't working.  Says it's still under maintenance.

I changed mine when I updated to the new firmware... I'm not sure what the process is at this point. It's a byzantine black box, this Sony mess.

Just beat this. Fantastic game. Valve really knocked it out of the park.

This is easily the funniest game I have ever played...I was laughing my ass off throughout the whole Cave Johnson section. And Merchant did a great job as Wheatly.

Well done, Valve. Well done.

Yeah, I rather enjoyed this one, I only wish there was more to be seen. But as is the way with anything I like :D

I downloaded the soundtrack from Think with Portals and frequently put it on while I'm working as it makes great background music.

Can't wait for the DLC.

It's my guess that there will be a package of player-made maps that have seen a little polish from Valve before they're released on Steam.  The recent map design contest had a requirement that any submitted maps begin and end with the elevator.

While we wait for a packaged release, the winning entries and runners up from the contest can be found individually here

Just started playing this today. So far its awesome, and quite funny!

Just wait until you get to that part and you go holy shit that's hilarious...it's like that for the next 6 hours. Game of the Year, enjoy!

And then that one thing happens and the character says some stuff.  Seriously, you have pleasures in store.

I'm somewhere in the middle of chapter 3 right now, this game is fucking brilliant!

Wow, I remember being where you are. It's like waking up next to Kelly Brook and she wants you to nibble off bacon bits from her chest. Good times.
I loved the back story that they throw in, and I don't mean the stuff that's right in your face. They throw in some of your characters backstory for you to find. You've gotta keep your eyes peeled for it though as the game won't let you know when you find it. Also I had to dig around the internets for some stuff after, a translation anyways.
I loved the he'll out of this one, I'm still playing the soundtrack.

Just finished it today! Definitely GOTY for me as of right now! And it will be VERY hard to dethrone it from that title.

Agreed...but will it beat Battlefield3 for GOTY?

I hope so, as it's more...quirky...

I'll tell you what's gonna beat Portal 2. Saints Row The Third!

Battlefield 3 is going to be amazing...but in the end just more of the same.

The "Peer Review" DLC map pack went on Steam today, for the low, low price of zero dollars and zero cents. You may have had it patched into your game automatically by now if you kept Portal 2 installed on your drive.

The map pack's single player content consists of time challenge versions of the maps you've already seen from the game's solo campaign. The new maps are all co-op.

The third and final volume of "Songs To Test By" is up as well. And yes, this installment has the full version of the turret aria from the end cinematic, "Cara Mia Addio."

Shit's also free on Xbox marketplace too.
