Awesome trailers crappy movies.

Thread Starter
What movie trailers come to mind where you're watching them and you're thinking to yourself this looks awesome, there's no way they can fuck up the movie and then you see the movie and it sucks?

The one that comes to mind for me is Superman Returns. I thought Bryan Singer had done a really good job with X-Men and X-Men 2. The trailer for Superman Returns had me pumped. I see the movie and it sucked.

The Phantom Menace trailer must be the greatest movie grift ever.

I also gotta agree with Superman Returns. Though the rest of the film was pretty gawd awful, that plane rescue still kicks ass. It's the perfect Superman moment and it's completely fucked by the rest of the film.

The movie wasn't that bad... but the trailer for 300 is magnificent compared to the actual film.

Transformers trailer absolutely sold me on the film and it was pretty worthless IMO. (Still haven't seen the sequel)

GODZILLA (USA '98)
Teaser 1
Teaser 2
Trailer

I felt so cheated opening night. The size of my disappointment mattered fo sho.

Dead Again. After his debut with Henry V, I thought that Branagh would be the next great thing in cinema. Holy shit was Dead Again depressing after its amazing trailer.

The teaser for Jaws 3-D, which set an ominous tone and hinted at the series staying in the creepy, endless expanse of the ocean waters.....only to conceal that silly Sea World cheeseball setting that was in the actual film.

Terminator: Salvation wins for '09

The Alien: Resurrection "twinkle twinkle little star" teaser suggested greatness. Instead I got Frenchness with a side of Whedon.

I bring this up in every thread that touches on dashed expectations, so I guess I'll go for consistency here: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

The father of the person who came up with that marketing campaign really needs to be in season 4 of Mad Men and they should have at least one "Bring Your Kid to Work Day" events on that show. That film was sold perfectly. It was basically the Star Wars version of Draper's monologue pitching the concept of the Kodak Carousel:

"Teddy told me that in Greek, 'nostalgia' literally means 'the pain from an old wound.' It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. This film isn’t a spaceship and it isn't about spaceships, it’s a time machine. It goes backwards, forwards, takes us to a place where we ache to go again. It’s not called Star Wars, it’s called Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow. It lets us travel the way a child travels. Round and around, and back home again: to a place where we aren't embarrassed to be in the theater, Han shoots first, and we know we are loved."

Spider-Man 3 has to be a pretty blatant example, despite the inexplicably rising defence

I'm 100% certain that if you add the right NIN song to any trailer it will be instantly awesome.

Movies too. Natural Born Killers, Final Destination and Wanted concur.

STUNT ROCK has the greatest ratio of awesome trailer/crappy movie ever.

Wow, that is one sweet trailer, even if Branagh is trying WAY too hard with the accent.

'Toys'. This trailer got a HUGE response from the entire theater. Fucking TERRIBLE movie.
Sweet zombie jesus that Toys trailer made my brain fucking scream.

There's a good Unbreakable trailer that makes great use of NIN as well.
The music works well for Salvation's trailer, but I hated how they kept in the one line of vocals.

I have a feeling CLASH OF THE TITANS is going to be the winner for 2010.

Pearl Harbor has a pretty high spot on this list.

'00 double feature of Mission Impossible II and Gone in 60 Seconds. I actually broke my finger tripping and falling in the theater when I saw M:I:II, and decided to wait it out because I had a really good seat and was convinced it was going to be worth it.

Agreed, and I say that as probably the one person on the board who still kind of sort of likes Pearl Harbor with giant reservations.

And I will not stand for Dead Again bashing. How dare you, sir. /Olbermann

Highlander 2 is the first time as an adult I remember being so pissed at the disparity between the trailer and the movie.
The Matrix 2; probably the largest gap between what I expected from the trailer and what I got when I was in the theater. At least with The Phantom Menace, I was in loser denial until I saw it on video. Matrix 2's disappointment was immediate and swift.

I know its a fan edit, but yeah. B&R
Actually, this trailer made me think that my friends were wrong when it came to B&R... Now, I give all the credit to the awesome combo of Peter Cullen and Danny Elfman.

All-time winner.

Was just thinking about that the other day, after my wife picked up a used copy for a couple of bucks. That trailer made me think it was going to be my favorite movie since... I dunno, Die Hard or maybe even Raiders. How the hell do you fuck that up so badly?

If nothing else, it demonstrates that actually having some real film-direction experience under your belt can be a good thing.

Apropos of nothing particular, I like this IMDB listing among Conran's credits:

Not to be snarky, but I'd have to like the trailer a helluva lot more than I do for that to be the case. 's OK, but doesn't strike me as remarkable.

Though I don't know if I've ever seen a film change taglines in midstream before: we went from "Titans.Will.Clash" to "Damn.The.Gods", and I have the feeling I saw yet a different one last weekend.

I wish "The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie was even half as awesome as it's trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbGNcoB2Y4I

Also "Comedian". I'll admit I never saw the movie, but there's no way it could be nearly as awesome as this trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVDzuT0fXro

ARMA-fucking-GEDDON.

Check out the big bat prop that was scrapped from the film at 2:34. It's a shot of Kilmer standing in front of this giant cheap looking bat head.

And I think so far Terminator Salvation has won this thread. I just watched the trailer a few days ago and it's pretty fucking awesome if you ask me. The actual movie, not so much.

Sin City. One of the best trailers I've ever seen and then a huge disappointment first time I saw the movie. I've grown somewhat softer on it with time and the freedoms afforded by the Director's Cut.

ETA: I'd also toss in that Kingdom of Heaven trailer with the guitar in it. The theatrical release, as we all know, was balls. Of course, this might be a weird nomination simply because the Director's Cut is one of the best movies ever and technically the trailer doesn't discriminate.

I love the Tron Legacy trailer, but it seems more likely that the film will be crap.
How have we gotten this far without mentioning CLIFFHANGER?
Do we really need to prognosticate about movies we haven't even seen yet? Tron Legacy or Clash of the Titans already have an uphill battle without Chewers JINXING them.
I loved the 'W' trailer that used the Talking Heads. It was a neat idea to pitch the story of Bush's presidency as a story of one man's mid-life crisis (one that the whole world had to live through).

3000 Miles to Graceland!!! My friends and I were all so pumped by this trailer that we all went to see it opening night, expecting nothing but greatness.

It was not a fun evening...

The trailer for Driven is one of the best trailers I've seen. The film is something else.

Alternate version. Renny Harlin can cut one hell of a trailer.

I do wonder about the original script for Batman Forever at times. Supposedly it was pretty good. I think that scene might of been from the amnesia plot line where Bruce gets shot and finds the red book of his fathers deeper in the cave where he originally fell. A giant bat then flys at him, but I think it was probably more him imagining it as he regained his memory.

I could be wrong, and I'm happy with the Nolan movies.

I will never understand the dislike for 3000 Miles to Graceland. Ever.

The scene is on the DVD (and can be seen here) and it is really, really stupid. It's basically the magical tree scene from Empire with Down's Syndrome, featuring Bruce as Luke and Alfred as Yoda.
