Canada gets plastic money!

Radical!

From the article:

CBC News wanted to get some local Canadians' impressions of the polymer bills. Reporter Sandra Abma took an Australian banknote and a classic cotton-paper Canadian bill and asked people on the streets of Ottawa to compare. The opinions were mixed.

"It would be easier to lose, I think," said one woman, after rubbing her fingers on the polymer bill. "It's soft and smooth and it could slide out easier."

"This feels like Monopoly money actually," said a young man. "It's like I took this out of a board game and then went to buy Timmy's with it."
LULZ!!1!11!!

In all seriousness I think this is a cool idea. The article says Australia has had plastic money since the early 90's due to the abundance of surfers out there. Now I won't feel so bad if I leave money in my pants when they go through the wash or if my wallet gets wet.

That's just awful. I was on the board praising Canada's money just the other day. Now they go and do this and I look like a fool. Plastic money? So instead of having a limited circulation life, it will be unkillable and will be ugly and grungy as heck within 6 months. Plus, paper money feels awesome. The tactile sensations that a care worn bill can provide simply cannot be beat

It still feels like paper it just has a slight (very Slight) waxy coating on it. Once the notes get old you don't even notice the difference.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure if it fell apart after six months Australia and the many other countries that use it frequently would have stopped a long time ago.

What Australia, NZ and Canada should have done was used the opportunity to get rid of the freakin Queen from our money.

I'm sure the woman has lots of sex.

They actually make the paper for dollars right near me. It's a super secret formula with all sorts of specific kinds of fibers and other such advancements. That's hella cool

Plastic is lame and obviously it's easier to fake the feel of a plastic bill than it is to fake the feel of real money

There is no other paper in the world like the paper the American dollar is printed on. It provides a totally unique sensory experience and I would not give that up for cheap plastic in a million years

Price you pay for being part of the Commonwealth I guess. Plastic Money seems like an interesting way forward, although isn't plastic a really stupid ideas given that it's essentially oil, the one resource we really don't need to expending more of.

I'm like 35 mins away. It's in Dalton I think.

Anyway, I'm sure it's very hygienic wherever it is.

I'm sure you could make the plastics from bio-sources, but that doesn't solve the essential problem of plastic's classless and tawdry texture

Cool for the money, sad that we get to keep the Royal Bitch.

Don't want to derail the thread, but on another thread a month or two back I got in a giant argument with some Canadians about how they shouldn't have a foreign monarch on their money, and how they need to finish up severing the ties to England.

I was told that it was a matter of "tradition" because of your cultural roots to england. I said poppy cock, it's an overt sign of fealty to the crown

Anyway, that discussion was already had, we don't need to have it again. I just want to ask: So, there are indeed some Canadians who see eye to eye with me on that?

Nah, I have no idea how people can roll them up so it's not too big for your nostril but also not too small to suck anything up. I remain convinced that comes from the movies and not the real world

Nah it gets quite sharp at the ends and if you're not careful can give the inside of your nose a nasty scratch...

...I've been told.

If you take a regular plastic straw, and hold a lighter under it for like 2 seconds (with the flame not touching the end) the end part melts and curls back, making a smooth non sharp end to the straw

I thought I should probably add, before anyone gets an inaccurate impression, that that knowledge comes from fidgeting around with straws which I like to collect in bulk from Cumbies (a local version of 7/11). I feel the shelf life of a straw (in terms of it remaining sanitary once deployed into use) is roughly 20 minutes, so I take a bunch whenever I get buy a drink. But I end up taking more than I end up ultimately needing, so I play around with the rest. I enjoy making giant 3 foot super straws, for example
