Justified on FX March 16th 2010

Forgive me if there's a thread for this but I didn't see it. I'm pretty jazzed for this one as I think Elmore Leonard is the greatest writer ever and Raylan Givens just happens to be one of my favorite characters from the "Elmore-verse". Where the hell did it come from? I didn't see/hear anything from it until I started seeing promos last week. Not sure if Olyphant is right for Raylan Givens but I have been digging him more and more lately. And hey, Walton Goggins can brighten up any FX original as far as I'm concerned. Here's the link to the original site if anyone's interested:

FTW kid, I am...Justified in saying that this looks like a great show. I just hope it...Marshalls enough ratings to...Justify a season 2. Finally...Action series are re-emerging after years of...Law and Order, CSI (Can't Stand It), terrible sitcoms, etc. Timothy Olyphant is a terrific actor, and he will nail the role he has been...Givens.

I'm excited to see an updated Sheriff Bullock on the screne too.

Premieres tomorrow. Getting some great reviews. I think Herc may have overpraised it though, he seems to imply it's the 2nd best cop drama compared to THE WIRE!

Or that Twin Peaks is a better cop show than The Wire. I wouldn't call it a better show than The Wire in general but especially on a cop level not.

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing this but I unfortunately work tomorrow. Is FX good about putting stuff up on Hulu or their own site pretty quickly?

From what I remember watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, it was about a week before it got online.
Really excited for this. I need my TV testosterone fix until Sons comes back. Plus, SHANE! I love that that dude has an Oscar.

And an interesting interview with Walt Goggins, who apparently is in it for the entire season, not just the pilot. Great news!

Anything with Shane is worth watching. Been looking forward to this for a while.
Yeah, it looks good. Not a huge fan of Yost's work, but I'm not expecting him to capture Leonard's writing - not sure he's up to it, frankly - so much as just put forth a compelling crime drama.
I'm excited as hell for this show. That crazy action and drama has been lacking on TV since The Sheild left this mortal coil. Gonna rock my Cletus Van Damme shirt and root for the bad guys tonight!
So glad Goggins is a season-long antagonist now. Originally they killed him off in the pilot, but focus groups loved him so much they changed their mind. Focus groups, for once, you win hard.
Didnt know that. Goggins = the tits.

Nice to know that Goggins sticks around. The pilot's based on "Fire in the Hole" by Leonard and his character ends up dead at the end of it, but I didn't think they could send off Shane Vendrell himself after one episode. And man, I can't see this tonight, but am I really going to have to wait a week to catch it online? That sucks.

There's an article on The Daily Beast that says he's only around for a few episodes. I hope that's not the case and he actually is around for the whole season.

Sepinwall agrees with you, that when Yost doesn't have his writing to work with, it suffers, but is still good.

Frankly, one of the few writers that can capture Leonard is Scott Frank and Tarantino.

That was pretty damn good.
Pretty good.
I thought that was fucking terrific. One of the best pilots in recent memory.
It didn't blow me away like the pilots for Rescue Me or Damages but it was pretty good. Olymphant and Goggins were fantastic so hopefully we'll get much more of them together. Also curious as to what's up with the dad.

ETA: I hate to admit it but I had zero interest in watching this until I saw Walton Goggins in the previews. Wasn't he working on a show for AMC?
So far so great. Sets the tone perfectly right out of the gate.

Was hoping Matt Craven would be a regular. Oh well.

That's still happening, at least he mentioned it was gonna start filming around this time in an interview from a few months back. Doubt it'll be ready for air until maybe the fall.

Yeah, he has a pilot set up there called Rectify. All I know about it is, he plays a character that is released from long stint in prison after DNA evidence is found that proves him innocent.
Really great pilot. Olyphant is terrific. Deadwood never completely worked for me mostly because it was a well written/acted show with a terrible story. But he was never the problem for me, just the general thrusts of the story lines. But here, he is absolutely terrific with a good story to match. As long as this keeps up, guess I got a new show...
It has me for now. I am sucker for coming home to small Southern town stories. Bit sad they didn't film the rest of the series in the area.

Second post, guess I'm gushing now, but this thing worked for me all the way through, and the humor and clear confidence of 'Raylen' was easily the best selling point. I absolutely agree, Olyphant was freakin' great.
Who knows how it will hold up, but that was a very entertaining 70 minutes.
Not over the moon just yet, but a very promising start.

Olyphant was working that hat.

That might explain part of my mooning. I can't wear any kind of fucking hat. I blame the Navy Dixie Cup.
I'd already watched that shotgun scene twice, but goddamn. It's still fantastic.

Dug the holy hell out of this. I know Lost is THE show on Tuesdays, but fuck that. It's now the appetizer to some sweet Southern violence and swagger.

And how awesome is Goggins? So awesome. I expected the role to be pretty much Shane as a crim but got a nice turn on that.

That hat is pretty fucking powerful.

In for the long haul. That was some good shit.

Oh, and loved the junior-ish Marshal capping the large racists with his sniper rifle. Stylish, sir.
How about Peter Greene, aka Zed himself showing up to get blown away in the first five minutes?

I don't watch much TV these days, but I'm gonna go out of my way to catch this one. Everything pretty much worked for me, and I'm glad to see Timothy Olyphant being a badass on my screen again. It's been too long, Tim....it's been too long.

Wasn't that great? Wish I could remember the exact lines...
I missed this tonight. Did they show anything about the new season of Rescue Me during the commercials?
It kicks ass. This episode was like Extreme Prejudice with Olyphant and Goggins taking over for Nolte and Boothe. Would love to see Walter Hill direct an episode.

Paraphrasing but the lines were:

Junior Marshal: Do you want to kill 'em or just wing 'em?
Senior Marshal: Just wing 'em for now.

Very reminiscent of Hans's instructions to the terrorists taking out the SWAT team in DIE HARD.

Terrific pilot. Can't wait to see what the rest of the season brings.
Yeah, that was it. Good times.

I really like the brevity of the pilot. Words don't seem to be wasted, scenes don't drag on, a lot is just said with the tilt of a hat or the draining of a glass. Also, the music was rad.

Interesting interview:

But every tin star-sporting Western sheriff needs a powerful adversary who's just as unpredictable and dangerous as he is. Justified has that in the character of Boyd Crowder, played by The Shield's Walton Goggins, who is slated to appear in roughly three-fourths of the episodes this season. The two share a past in the coal mines but, despite their friendship, they're on opposite sides of the law and—SPOILER ALERT!—Raylan is forced to take him down at the end of the pilot, firing a gunshot that seemingly kills Boyd.
"We had to think about that for a long time," said Yost about deciding to keep Goggins' Boyd around, rather than killing him off. "We just loved working with Walton [and] loved the character of Boyd Crowder. We all agreed that we would bring him back. It was just trying to do it without destroying the emotional impact of the scene where he gets shot and Raylan looks at him and says, 'We used to mine coal together.' It's not the most elegant thing in the history of television, but we tell ourselves Julianna Margulies died at the end of the ER pilot and they figured that out."

Now that was some good TV. Well acted, written and beautifully shot. The humor was good without being silly or out of context. The surprise on Olyphant's face when his ex-wife said he is the angriest person she met was really well done. Goggin's was AWESOME as expected. Man can he play a dirtbag.

I loved the fat skinhead hillbillies. The wood chopping scene was a riot. The young agent winging them was a nice touch. All the Glynco references slayed me, my parents worked there for years and I like how they called that out.

And I can't be the only person who yelled "Herman's Head!" when Ragsdale came on the TV.
I yelled "MANNEQUIN 2!"

Don't judge.
Not bad first ep. Olyphant did ok with the Walking Tall thing, and his character has the potential to go to some interesting places. And it was great to see Shane again. The role is hardly a stretch for him (first scene= firing a bazooka at some black people), but I like the implication that his character doesn't really believe all that "mud people" bs, and is actually just in it for the money and the killing. I also like how he made subtle modifications to sound like a Kentucky boy. Despite Goggins though, the show has some of the same stink of inauthenticity as Sons of Anarchy. But I'll probably watch at least as long as the Gog is in it.

That Tombstone poster chief, dunno if I've seen the actor before but he seems funny. Also got quite a few chuckles from Boyd's crew, hope to see more entertaining scenes involving his gang of fat racists/incompetent Klansmen/slackjawed Aryans/toothless simpletons/village idiots/country bumpkins/etcetcetc
post #41 of 418
Oh, and Olyphant's weird little gun check before leaving the motel- pretty badass.
No, it wasn't terribly authentic, but, then again, neither was The Shield.
Was that just makeup or is Greene really sick with something? He looked terrible.

Did you notice that the female marshal did the same check at the shootout afterwards? That was extra cool.

All in all a good start. The only possible problem for the show is if they just start coasting on Olyphant's charm. But judging by the supporting cast this probably won't be a problem.

I certainly hope it was just makeup, dude looked like shit. I think it was, actually, his diseased looks went perfectly along with his sleazebag demeanors and made for a pretty memorable first foe for Olyphant to cap. Man, that bit was a damn good way to start the show.

Pretty awesome stuff, simple and to the point. We already knew that Olyphant can Clint it up pretty well, this is the perfect vehicle for him.

I'm also glad to know that Goggins is going to be in for the long haul. Now the show only needs to be validated with a Garret Dillahunt appearance.
I havent gotten around to watching a single episode of Deadwood, so I pretty much only know Olyphant from pseduo-Die Hard and his brief stint on Damages...and by that I mean I thought he was boring and almost a black hole of charisma.

Now I know what a complete 180 feels like.
It was good enough. But i wasn't blown away. Everyone except Olyphant seems like a blank so far. I hope they flesh out the secondary characters more.
Enjoyed it immensely. DVR-worthy, for sure.

I'll join the man-crushing on Olyphant. Raylen is a much more charismatic character than Seth Bullock.
Yeah, I can watch this. I am a sucker for a well told Elmore Leonard story.
I thought this was a solid pilot, and I think a fair part of why that is goes to Goggins. They're going to need some charismatic villains to play off Olyphant's restrained Raylin.

Am I the only one that finds the implication they weren't going to bring Goggins back baffling, as if it were a decision made in post? What exactly were they setting up if not to have Goggins return later? Raylin's dad being the big bad? I did half expect his dad to be tied up with Goggin's character.

I don't even know what this means. People actually get hit in the gunfights on this show and Raylin personally shot two. It's not in the least trying to be anything close to a procedural, it's heightened reality through and through.
