Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - The Brutalist Bricks

Out today. Anyone got this yet?

It's way good. I wasn't really sold on it after the first listen, but to be fair I was in a pretty shitty mood with a lot of stuff on my mind, so I gave it another go when I was on a better brain frequency and it clicked. It's much better than their last jaunt, Living with the Living (thankfully, even though there are some tracks on there that have grown on me and I've kinda warmed to the album over time), a little bit more lo-fi, but still awesome.

I had the day off and I spent it mostly listening to this album, lost in Leo-love.

It's definitely his best in years, certainly better than the bloated, hit-or-miss Living with the Living. I might even like it better than Shake the Sheets, but it's tough to say just yet.

I'm seeing him in April and I can't wait. I think these songs are going to kill live. The energy from the band is on point. I've seen them before (and Leo solo) and he never disappoints, but I'm looking forward to something really special with this material up in front.

I'd been waiting Broken Bells and Plastic Beach for months, but oddly enough Brutalist Bricks was the CD I was most anticipating buying today, even though I just found out about Ted Leo about 2 or 3 days ago (one actually good thing Pitchfork has done for me lately). I'm really loving this album, and I really want to track down his earlier albums. Seems like the first two pharmacists albums would be the place to start. Any thoughts? How about Chisel?

Think I'm going to have to catch them live if I can. Anybody know when they're in LA?

March 27th. Can't recommend it enough. They put on a great show.

As for other albums, get them all save maybe Living with the Living (although even that has a few great tracks). The best (in my opinion) is The Tyranny of Distance, followed closely by Hearts of Oak. You can't go wrong with those two either way.

Chisel is really good too! They only have a couple of albums and singles, so there's not a lot there but what's there is good stuff. But I'd get the Ted Leo solo shit first, as it's the real deal.

Cool, and thanks. Hopefully I can make it to that show.

Yeah, 27th at the Troubadour. I'll be in line with a chainsaw.

And completely agreed with this. Start with 8 AM All Day and screw around from there. Though with respect to Leo's solo stuff I'm not really crazy about some of the dub-ish tracks on Tell Balgeary, Balgury Is Dead, it's still a pretty good album. But yeah, Tyranny of Distance followed by Hearts of Oak.

Great cover. Arguably better than the original, which I used to love as a kid. Btw, this is a new set of Pharmacists, right? My ex is a Ted Leo fanatic and it never really worked for me. But I like this new band enough to give the new record a serious listen.

New bassist, that's pretty much it. They recorded and are currently touring with Marty Key, although he's not quite a permanent bass replacement, at least not yet.

That is a great cover. Hope he plays it on tour. Leo never disappoints with his covers. His version of "Do Anything You Wanna Do" I heard him do live once is permanently stitched into my mind. It was awesome.

More TL covers here: http://www.youaintnopicasso.com/2010...-and-counting/

Mods, let me know if that's a questionable link and I'll delete it, but it seems fine and it's covers, not his actual recorded music.

Got my tickets. Be careful with that chainsaw Jake, I don't want to lose any more limbs than is necessary at a concert.

I gotta jump on 'em fast, just got paid today! Did you go through Goldenvoice or is there a cheaper/better vendor?
I just grabbed mine through the vendor that Ted's site links to. TicketFly I think. Tickets were $16.00 with a $4.99 service charge. Pretty reasonable, all things considered.

Yeah, that's what I did. Totally fine with $20 to see these dudes play.

Prices at the Troub have been pretty reasonable for bands I like lately. I managed to see Dinosaur Jr for about $25 over the summer.

Didn't they do a free gig there about a month ago, too? Hate that I keep missing them.

They might have done one but I didn't get around to it. They seem to be touring a lot lately, so you'll probably have another chance to see them soon enough. It's definitely worth it.
