True Crime

Couldn’t find a thread for this and then I realised that in all likely hood no one cares.

Of course I care. Back in the days when I only had a Gamecube (truly the worst gaming ghetto to find yourself in) True Crime: Streets of LA was the closest I got to Grand Theft Auto. Of course it was kind of ropey and all over the place (wait, why are fucking dragons crashing into my gritty kung fu cop game) but it always held a place in my heart. I never bothered with True Crime: NYC because by that point I had a PS2 and had access to ACTUAL Grand Theft Auto games.

So I’m actually quite interested in the new game. The preview below….

…makes the game sound derivative but it also makes it sound a lot of fun. The idea of Kung Fu fighting your way around Hong Kong sounds like it could be a lot of fun and the aesthetic seems to be derived from Infernal Affairs. It’s surprisingly good looking and the few gameplay videos I’ve seen show that it’s got fluidity and decent animation to back that up.

Hopefully it’s going to combine the elements of other games it’s ripped off to create something which is at least fun to play. 2010 is looking like it could really be a year for great ‘dark horse’ games with Darksiders turning out to be not be terrible and Mafia 2, Red Dead Redemption and Just Cause 2 all looking to quietly make bids for game of the year. Hopefully this will join that flock.

I sort of liked True Crime: Streets of LA. Definitely ropey, kinda unforgivably shitty at times, but still a lot more fun than I initially gave it credit for. I heard that NYC was awful, though.

Color me interested in this one!

I had True Crime on the original XBOX I think. Was that the one where you could bullet time whilst driving and aim at people's fuel tanks?

I remember thinking that was pretty cool.

Yeah I think so.

The most important fact though is that the final boss of a fairly grounded GTA Clone was Fing Fang Foom.

I said this on another site, but I'll repeat it here:

The True Crime games had one thing going for them – those random optional cop missions. They made the sandboxiness bearable, given the ugly graphics and terrible controls. I’ve long thought that a good GTA expansion would center around the LCPD, and while there would be a storyline (perhaps with branching good cop/bad cop paths) there would also be tons of random missions that actually made you feel like you were a peace officer in the most crimeridden city in America.

Oh well, hopefully APB Online will give me what I want.

I never played the NYC one, but Streets of LA made the big mistake of having a HUGE city with nothing to do in it. It also crashed a lot(on GC and Xbox). Playing as Snoop Dogg was a nice touch, and shooting gas tanks was a hoot.

I heard the opposite of Jake about the NYC one, but who knows, at that point I was knee deep in San Andreas and couldn't care less about True Crime.

NYC was indeed dick cheese. It manages to be a glitchier, buggier piece of shit than its predecessor.

Between this and Dead to Rights, the new thing seems to be resurrecting shitty cop games from last gen. Here's hoping for NARC 2!

Damn. Really glad I avoided it then. Streets of LA was a glitch-fest.

It was better-looking than Streets of LA, which isn't saying much. The world in LA was pretty big, but Luloflux retained that nasty habit from the Nintendo 64 era where they would take a 64x64 bitmap and stretch it across a landscape and call it grass (Vigilante 8 says hi).

And Spike, people did care about this series here. There's actually about a half dozen different threads on the series. Here's the big thread. Fuck, this game pushed all the right buttons for Chewers in 2003. A game with Walken, Madsen, and Mako? Sold!

Speaking of shitty crime games, anyone remember in The Getaway? The one where you didn't have a map to make it more immersive and had to navigate based on which turn signal was blinking at the moment? Yeah, real fucking immersive that one was.

Ah, True Crime... the Saints Row of its era... totally goofy and a lot of fun.

How can you not love a game where one of your finishing moves has the title character scream, "KUNG POWWW!" ?

I. Don't fuck. With no bitch...ass...nig...gas! No I. Don't fuck. With no bitch...ass...nig...gas!

Got real tired of hearing that fuckin' song on the radio.

Exploding cars was easily the best part of this game. That and the ability to randomly shakedown any pedestrian.

Christ, what a piece of shit that was. I remember being super excited about the idea of a realistic GTA style game set in England as directed by Guy Ritchie. If I remember right there wasn't a HUD at all so you had no idea how much ammo or health you had left and the on foot controls were some of the worst I've ever dealt with, you literally had to walk around in a 10 foot circle to turn the character around.

Coupled with the awful script and lunkheaded mockney gangster lead character, "Arrgh you caaaaant, I've been faaackin shot aint I you slaaaag", what a horrible game.
