haha that's pretty awesome.

2 out of 4 vs. the Yankees. Not too bad. Hopefully we can keep a little momentum from yesterday, and hope the Rays continue to shit themselves.
Yeah, I'll take a series split with the Yankees in our condition, even if it didn't really make up any ground with the standings. Jesus, I'm surprised they didn't slaughter us.

The Ray's suck and need to die off right quick. I still have some hope that we'll wild card it up. Maybe everyone will be healthy by the playoffs (except for Youk).

I'll never get tired of watching this:

Just ridiculous.

Clay Buchholz is now the AL's ERA leader at 2.49. Excellent. Now if only Texas can hold on and not completely piss away their lead tonight...

Golly Bill Hall, hearing Dustin's footsteps comin' up behind you?
17 blown saves this season. sigh
To keep with the "Major League" theme...at the next victory (walk off or playoff) someone may "Wild Thing" Papelbon..maybe Mike Lowell haha
post #259 of 285
Well, it was a fun season.

Not really, it was a frustrating and occasionally pleasant but mostly unsatisfactory season. How about next year?
This season was assholes. Good riddance.
I have never seen a team play so well while facing such adversity. The injuries this year have been comical, and so bad that you'd expect the team to fade many months ago, but they never quit. It didn't help that the bullpen is garbage outside of Felix Papelbard, and Beckett Lackey are both dogshit, but even with all of that nonsense, the Sox have played out of their minds. Unfortunately, they just aren't as good as the Rays and the Yankees.

Some bright spots, though...in the last 365 days, Clay Buchholz is 20-6, with a 2.84 ERA, and 160 hits and 140 Ks in 193 innings. Lester has had a monster year as well, giving the Sox two potential Cy Young candidates as the top of the rotation.

One thing's for certain...I can't wait for the Rays to suck again. I mean, it's crazy, but I hate the Rays more than the Yankees at this point.

Certainly you don't mean this.

It will be a very interesting off season. What do you pay Beltre, if anything? The guy will finish in the top 10 of MVP voting and he is going to want a long-term deal. I think Beltre is in a perfect situation in Boston, but do the Sox pay him $15 mil a year for 5 years? What do you do with Drew and Papi? What about Papelbon? I don't know if Martinez is the long-term answer at C, although I don't know if you have a lot of choice there. I do think you will always be in contention with a core of Pedroia/Youkilis/Buchholz/Lester & Bard.

It's probably because I'm in Rays country...as well as their douchey fans, that shit stadium, the whiniest announcers in MLB*, and the fact they've owned Boston going on 3 years now.

*case in point...when the Yanks were in Tampa a few weeks ago, after a bad call that went against NYY, I heard that curly-headed dick Dewayne Staats say "Wow, the Yanks cry as much as the Red Sox now!". Eat me.

Re-signing Beltre will be a priority as there's no other 3B's out there, but the Angels need one as well and will have money to spend. Maybe the Sox let him go if he and Boras seek 5/75. Jed Lowrie can slide to 3rd, but I'd rather him platoon with Scutaro at SS. Papi has a $12.5 mil team option that will most certainly not get picked up. I bet they offer him 2/16, but he needs to come back. Drew will be let go after his contract runs out as our OF is in decent shape for the future with Ellsbury/Kalish/Reddick (as long as Beltre, if re-signed, doesn't continue to break his teammate's ribs). Papelbon has to come back. He's more valuable to the RS than any other team, and I love having Bard as the setup guy (even with Tito not using him there all the time...soooo frustrating). They traded for Saltalamacchia, and he'll be able to relieve VMart of his C duties on occasion. It's hard to give up on a switch-hitting C who can bat 3rd, but we'll see what kind of money he asks for. The Sox put a waiver claim in for Mike Napoli, and to be honest, he's a great fit in Fenway (I know Josh Beckett would love to never have to pitch against him again), but the Angels pulled him back, although Mike Scioscia clearly doesn't like him.

The issue is gonna be health, first and foremost, but they have a lot of tough decisions to make coming up soon. Theo's got his work cut out for him.
If we fucking low-ball Beltre like we have every other player of worth just because Boras is their agent, I'm going to take a shit in Theo's Mom's mouth.
I'm with you, Joe. I fucking hate the Rays. More than the Yankees.
I don't get this animosity towards the Rays. It's a traditionally shitty franchise that was almost forced to become good because of the sheer number of number 1 picks that they were able to accumulate.

The only thing that pisses me off about the Rays is the fact that they now have a young, exciting team and they have trouble drawing 12k to a game unless the Yanks or Sox are in town, in which case most of the fans are rooting for the away team. That's unforgivable. A team this good shouldn't be playing in an empty ballpark. Tampa doesn't need or deserve the Rays. Move this team to Brooklyn or Portland and it's a sellout every night.

Exactly. Been saying this for years.

For some reason, MLB just doesn't work in Florida, and it's a disgrace that this great, young, exciting team can't draw worth a shit (same with the Marlins when they were great). I wish MLB would contract both teams, to be honest.

I guess it's sorta the same problem their hockey franchises have - much of the population is transplanted from other parts of the country with pre-existing sports loyalties.

I think thats a big part of it. At work I'm one of the only people actually from Florida and no one likes to transfer allegiances from old teams. At both Hockey and Baseball games it's far more away fans than home. I went to a Canadiens game last season and it was easily 3/4's Habs fans. O Canada was much louder than the Star Spangled Banner. It's hard to compete when the team is everyones third favorite or something.

How one knows the season is cooked: I found craploads of parking spots last night 2 blocks from Kenmore.

And I saw more Rays shit on the T then I did Red Sox. No joke, that's bad fucking news.

Nice sweep in Seattle, boys! Only 6 back of the Yanks for the WC! I'm just holding out hope that the Sox can stay close enough to make their remaining games with the MFY mean something.

In other news, my birthday is tomorrow, and I got to open a present early:

Signed by Jerry Remy himself! My girlfriend and her daughter got it for me, and they were dying for me to open it. Love it.

Nice! Hapy bday, Joe!

It's too bad Papeltard choked that last game in Yankee stadium, or the Sox would be only 3.5 back and really making the Yankees sweat. Still, it's amazing that they've hung around this long. Again, I've never seen any team, in all my years following baseball, hang with the two beat teams in the league until the last week of baseball...without 4 starters (and a rash of injuries to just about everyone else), no bullpen, and dogshit years from two "aces". Tito's done a heck of a job.

On another note, today is the 50th anniversary of Ted Williams' last game. If anyone's interested, here's a great article that was written by John Updike after attending:

Francona should be manager of the year, but it's going to Gardenhire.

Hey folks, as you've probably heard, the football (soccer) team I support Liverpool FC have agreed a deal in principle with John Henry and New England Sports Ventures to buy the club.

I've read a couple of articles on them but I'd rather hear the fans opinions. Thought this would be a good place to see what's the general consensus of these guys, are they good owners? Do they invest in the team? Good relationship with the fans? Are they taking your club in the right direction in the long term?

We are currently owned by Tom Hicks and George Gillett who have saddled the club with so much debt and broken so many promises they are basically public enemy number 1 in Liverpool. I'm sure people with knowledge of their disasters with Texas Rangers will know what type of owners they are.

You're gonna be pretty psyched over the next few years. I think they've been great to us here, and they'll pretty much do what it takes to field a winning team. Plus, Tom Werner gave the world the Cosby Show, so 'nuff said.

I've read their statement and it does seem like a good deal for us, I think Liverpool are in a similar position to the Red Sox when he took over. We were the best team in England and Europe in the 70's and 80's but we haven't won the championship in 20 years and have stagnated. He seems positive about instilling a winning sensibility again, something we really need.

I really hope he can invest in our stadium, thats were the real long term stability comes from.

And I love the Cosby show.

Some folks in Liverpool are calling for Martin O'Neill to coach...Didn't Celtic FC play a friendly at Fenway over the summer?
What John Henry & Co. have done with the Red Sox has been nothing short of remarkable. Most importantly, they gave the Red Sox their first championship in 86 years, and added another 3 years later for good measure. They've renovated Fenway Park numerous times, which has added tons of new seats and many needed upgrades as it'll be 100-years-old in 2012 (I believe the Liverpool stadium is old and in need of work). They've hired insanely smart people to run the team, which includes possibly the best manager in the team's history. They spend a ton of money on players to ensure they stay competitive, which is a must considering the Yankees are in the same division.

Liverpool FC is in good hands.
Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the new ownership at all.

But... if they can spend $400something million to buy a soccer team, then why the hell are we lowballing players in the offseason?

Please God, no! If these new guys come in with a bit of cash we should be able to attract a world class manager again, or at least an experienced continental one. Some like Pelligrini, Laudrup or Deschamps would be good.

This all sounds great, really great. I was a bit concerned about their lack of experience in British sport and football but I'm sure they'll bring in their own board, people with actual football experience unlike our current bunch of fuckwits.

Our stadium is seriously out of date compared to our nearest rivals and we've had talk of a brand new one being built for years. However, Anfield is such a big part of our club and culture that it just wouldn't feel right to move and I'd really hate moving to a generic, soulless Bland 'o Dome. Renovating Anfield would be perfect and we get to keep the Kop and nights like this.

Liverpool FC probably have the greatest untapped marketing/business potential in world sport, we have phenomenal support in Asia and Africa that we are not taking advantage of. Just look at what Manchester United and Real Madrid have done with their marketing potential since the 90's, that's what Liverpool could do but bigger. We will make Henry and NESV tons and tons of money if they nail the commercial side. This must be one of the main reasons he's doing this and I'm sure his other franchises will see the benefits as well.

That is incredible. I've never attended a real football match (real, as in not here in the States), and it's definitely something I need to do before I die.

Yeah, you basically just described Fenway Park (where the Red Sox play) to a T. Don't be worried.
