There is no argument. The Yanks can and do outspend the rest of baseball. It's a fact. How can you say they don't?

As for the rest:

The Sox were willing to trade Manny for ARod. Otherwise no way they were ever going to sign him (how about after he opted out in 2007? Hah, good one).

Tex was never going to Boston. He's a smart guy with a smart agent and they used the Sox as leverage. Plus, he was *the* perfect fit the Yankee offense. Zero chance the Yanks let him go.

The Sox did spend a lot to get Special K, but it was a silent bid. The Yanks bid over $30 million themselves, and I'm sure if they knew how much Boston bid, they would have made it competitive. Also, this is the ONE SINGLE TIME Boston outbid NY. One time.

The Sox did sign Lackey, but NY didn't have the need, and that was the Sox one large FA signing. 5 years, $82.5 million. The same contract Burnett got the year before. The same year when the Yanks also signed CC for $160 mil and Tex for $180 mil.

It's simple math. The Yanks have the advantage over everybody. That's just Major League Baseball.

I'm going with this for now.

What a ridiculous game today. The replacements for Ellsbury and Cameron come through in a big way and help the Sox actually win a game. The Rangers stole a team-record NINE bases (which is also a Sox record for SB's against), all against Wakes and VMart.

It wasn't pretty, but it was fun and it's a win.

The Yankees have an advantage, but its more about how far they are willing to go to win. The Yankees want it more than everybody else. They could choose not to sign free agents and pocket the savings from that, but they spend money to make money. Other teams choose to do it another way, and thats fine. The Twins owner could easily spend as much as the Yanks, same with the Royals owner. On top of all that, the Yankees have paid money towards a tax that has supplemented the incomes of other teams, yet most of these teams pocket the extra money rather than putting it back into their payroll.

As far as Sox vs. Yanks go, last year the Yanks had a alot of dead money come off the books and were in desperate need of a #1 starter and a first basemen, so it made a ton of sense for the Yankees to throw money at Tex and CC. The Sox didn't really have a pressing need for either one of them. Sure Tex would have been nice, but the Sox had other options. The Yanks didnt. The Sox and Yankees really don't compete that much over free agents. It's all really a matter of need and timing. Had Joe Mauer come onto the market this year or next year I have no doubt the Sox would have thrown everything including the kitchen sink at him and would happily have paid him 20-25 mil a year. He would fill a desperate need. I'm sure the Yanks would have showed interest in an attempt to jack up the price, but Posada is under contract for 3 more years and the Yanks best minor league prospect is a catcher, so not as much of a need.

OH my god let it go already. or at least start a new "The Yankees Are the Same As Everyone" thread

In other news: maybe it was partly because the C's were destroying miami at the same time one channel away, but that was a fun game to watch. well, after about the sixth inning anyway

BUT, is david ortiz getting pinch-hit for in the 7th a "wow" moment for anyone else (surprising that francona actually did it, not that he shouldnt have)? or is this just a one-time thing?

Hilarious is putting two patently incongruous ideas back-to-back. "Spending money to make money" does not equate with "wanting it more" when the "it" is "the best record in the AL East". It's not truth. It's Yankees jingoism.

I doubt it's a one-time thing. Ortiz needs some help, and he desperately needs to sit against lefties. Mike Lowell needs to hit as his bat is far superior to Papi's (wow), and it's being completely wasted. It's sad, seeing Papi struggle so much, but it happens to every hitter at some point.

oh i completely agree, it's just that in the past they've been.... i guess too stubborn to actually make that call right there. I was surprised, but i'm glad to see to it. even if my heart is slowly breaking seeing david ortiz fall apart like this.

Tito seems to love his veteran players a little too much. It's gotta be extra hard with Papi, though. What's funny is how well the corpse if Jason Varitek is playing. Although everyone but Dustin has been playing so bad, any signs of life are gonna be an improvement.

OH MY GOD I LOVE SPORTS!

Youuk! That'll teach Texas to walk Pedey. Another night, another squeaker.

Go, local area sports team, go!

Seriously though, good nail-biter there.

HUGE game by Buchholz tonight. He's having a great year so far and is the only consistent starter the Sox have at the moment.
Yeah, let's have a round of applause for Buchholz. Great game there.

Used to be that a game where Beckett starts gave me confidence. Funny how that's changed. Buccholz, you're the rock of our starters.
Sweep!!! 15 K's for Sox pitching tonight (11 by Lester, 3 by Bard, 1 by Paps). Back to .500 baby!!!
VERY nicely done by Lester. More of that, please, I could get used to that kind of pitching.
So, now that we're 50-50, it's beginning to feel like the Sox are finding their stride. Things are leveling out. Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I'm sensing that the Sox are finally establishing themselves after a rocky start of the season.

The Baltimore series should give them a fresh start.

For the Orioles. The Sox just got swept by the former worst team in baseball. Yes, right now, the Sox are the worst team in baseball.

It's painful to watch this collection of fuck-ups.
hey! Let's Go Bruins!
Yeah, getting swept by Baltimore. That still hasn't sunk in. Jesus Christ.
Man, that's the last time I hang on to any glimmer of hope 2010's team gives us. I just need to stop being optimistic here. Hey guys, the Sox are fucked, the whole year is going to be shit, and so on and so forth.
i'm going to the game tomorrow night, I think I might just go all way and openly cheer against them, Randy Quaid-style.
What are these "runs" that Don and Jerry keep talking about tonight???
What a night by Lester. And what an 8th inning, both the top and the bottom. Thankfully, Papi did his part yet again:

In just 4 at bats, two strike outs, two GIDP (so 6 of our 24 outs) and 7 LOB (in a low scoring tie game).

.149/.240/.358 (.598 OPS) on the season.

WTF is Tito doing letting Ortiz anywhere near the batter's box. So glad Hermida and Lowell are on the team as they actually can still hit.

Anyway, it's always fun beating the Angels.
well, that was actually a fun game to be at. the crowd was fucking electric in that eighth inning.

I never knew what it would feel like to be bipolar. then this red sox season came around. i just dont know what to feel

Just enjoy the ride, I suppose. They're playing like winners. For now.

Ortiz was swinging at anything tonight. You can't hit them all, buddy. Christ, take some pitches and learn some patience.

So now we're back up to having a record split evenly 50-50. Can we finally pull out more wins than losses in our next game against LA?

And what's the series against the Yankees going to look like if the Sox continue being present?

I think they're finding their groove. But I don't want to be too optimistic, because the Baltimore sweep is still fresh in my mind. But if we sweep the Angels, I'll be feeling a lot better. A Yankees series always elevates things and I bet we'll be a good match for them in the least. I'd be awesome if we put two back to back sweeps under our belt and make up some of those losses.

How about that catch that Hall made last night? Hahaha, even he seemed surprised he caught it.

Hah, yea, nothing worse than a low, lost-in-the-lights-line-drive, screaming at your face. It seems all the breaks that were going against us are going our way. For the moment, at least. Baseball's funny like that.

Anyway, a sweep tonight would be great momentum heading into this weekend. Interestingly, the Sox pitching has been giving up about the same amount of runs the Yanks have been scoring. So it's been like playing the Yanks every night. At least they're prepared. Going to be some long games.

I mean, I agree about not wanting to get one's hopes up, but I feel like this season, pluck and optimism are all we've got.

DiceK is easily the worst Red Sox player. He makes David Ortiz look like Albert Pujols.
First 4 game sweep of the Angels at Fenway since 1967. What a change from the abysmal Baltimore series, and what a way for the team to pick up the awful DiceK.

Here come the Yankees....

Yay for Boston sports!!

Maybe that punk ass Beckett can attempt to injure every Yankee batter giving the Sox a chance in this series. If you can't beat em, beam em.
And I believe it is now time to officially label Josh Beckett property of the New York Yankees. I'm so so glad you guys signed him to a big extension.

Oh really? Why is that? I didn't see any Yankee pitchers throwing at the best Sox hitters. Beckett is a fucking hothead, who is not nearly as good as he once was, kinda like the rest of the Sox. Enjoy his act for the next few years.
You're right, the Yankees never throw at the Sox batters. Especially not Kevin Youkilis.

Speaking of not being as good as they once were, Teix and ARod are sure earning their salaries this year. How about Granderson and Nick Johnson? They working out? Javy Vasquez? The Sox are beyond terrible this year, yet are only 6 back of the Yanks.

lol, only 6 games back. The Yanks have played less than 30 games and you are already six games back. I'm not sure that is something to brag about.

I like it that the Yanks have 4 starting pitchers currently better than anybody Boston can trot out there. And you're right, the Yankees haven't even started hitting yet, save for Cano and Jeter coincidentally the two guys Beckett tried to injure tonight.
