Chile left shaken by new quake measuring 7.2

Are our Chilean Chewers A-OK?

This is yet another incident in an emerging pattern of geologic disturbance that has rocked the globe from Istanbul to Port au Prince

In recent days I've grown (perhaps unreasonably) concerned over the danger posed by sudden tectonic activity. With LA now over due for the 'big one', I think this is a subject to which we should be paying closer attention

PS Ever since I saw 2012 a bunch on DVD last week, I've kind of been left in a state of perpetual unease. I feel that the potential calamity that could result from geologic-activity-run-amuck is far too serious to be ignored simply because it's scary to think about.. At this time, I'd like to volunteer to have my name put forward for the position of Unofficial Seismology Czar ( Czarina?) for the CHUD Forums . I pledge to do my best to keep the CHUD-munity(c) up to date about any and all major quakes that may or may not (lets hope 'not') happen in the future. I will do my darnedest to stay on top of these types of stories and bring them to you ASAP

CNN is reporting three aftershocks...7.2, 6.9 and 6.0. The new Chilean president was sworn in about twenty minutes after the second.

It's like the Earth is saying, "See this, California? You're next."

Hope all the Chewer folk are OK.
Im fine, here's hoping Feral is fine as well....for the inland, this was a bit of a scare and a midium alert, but the coast regions are on high alert due to Tsunami alarms.

Some of my friends got really scared. I was at home. Now at the University everything sees fine.

Glad to see you check in and let us know you're safe! Are you worried about the possibility of more earth quakes in the future?

And now that the CHUD-munity(c)'s Chilean contingent have sounded the 'all clear', I'm curious if anyone has yet had time to consider my proposal to serve as the CHUD Forum's Seismology Czarina. I think I'd do a bang up job, and would even change my custom user description to reflect my new title

I, for one, applaud PK's cloaking of what appears to be an Indian prostitution ring in the guise of concern for our Chilean Chewers.

Oh, come on, that's not fair. The very first sentiment I expressed in this thread was one of concern for the Chilean CHUD-munity(c). The second was my fear that the tectonic mayhem may escalate

If allowed to serve as Seismology Czarina* , my first and foremost duty would be to try and bring earth quake news and updates to the CHUD-munity(c) in as timely a manner as possible.

It's not a position I seek as some kind of weird ego boost. No, I'd be honored to be the go to girl for valuable information on current seismic events for the internet forum I've come to call home. It's a serious and sober task, and one that I do not take lightly

*I prefer to spell it Tsarina if that's cool with everyone, so officially my title would be 'Seismology Tsarina'. I know that in the US government, Tsars are spelled 'Czars', but all the same I prefer the Ts prefix

I am still lost. Could you explain what Mattioli was referring to? That photo someone posted was of Evo Morales, not prostitutes, and he's Bolivian not Indian

Now I'm questioning your dedication to Indian prostitution.

I wouldn't want you to think that! So for now I'm going to give up on trying to understand this new turn the conversation has taken

When you guys reach a decision on my proposal, lemme know

Is anyone really thinking she's legit poster?

Hmmm.. Is that an SAT style analogy? Seismology is to Indian Prostitution as Tsarina is to Pimperella?

Either way, still lost.

Anyway, I need to go watch a movie (and eat a sammich) right now. Having myself a lazy Thursday.

Glad to hear you're ok, Chile-Chewers! TTYL

She's a real poster.

And that sweet thing that's second from the left needs to drop by my office with a sandwich and a smile.

Kate, no need for a chud seismology tsarina. Thanks for the offer, though.

Bellydancers give me earthquakes. In my pants.

The best thing about this thread is if you start with the pictures of the new Chilean president and scroll up, it looks like he's checking out the Indian prostitutes.

Heh. You're right. With Chilean Chewers safe and accounted for and a photo of heads of state checking out Indian prostitutes, this thread is officially awesome.

Outstanding.

PK gave a shit about the first quake (which was a huge 8.5).

BTW I'm not Chilean I just live in Chile. Big difference . Ironically, where I came from (Uruguay) we have no such thing as quakes or any big natural disasters around.

No problem, Teledork. I can understand that maybe CHUD doesn't need someone unofficially in charge of relating Earth Quake news, I guess I just thought it would be nice to have my own role and function around here. I feel like I spend all my time trying to convince people to take me seriously, and sometimes it gets very frustrating. I thought maybe if I could do a good job with the earth quake thing, and ended up really excelling at keeping people here informed about that stuff, they'd realize that I do have utility to the CHUD-munityc(c).
Anyway, thanks for considering my proposal

PS While I was waiting for people to get back to me on my idea, I was spitballing a few titles and came up with a cool one in case the US Government ever decides to designate a bureaucrat to oversee matters relating to sudden outbreaks of seismology

The Tecton Tsar

(!!!)

(sounds like some kind of Tetra Grammaton earth quake buster)

PPS In the mean time, don't think that just because I don't get a fancy title doesn't mean that I don't still care or wouldn't try my best to stay on top of the earth quake situation for you guys

I did indeed. I cared then and I continue to care

And, wherever you hail from, it's just good you are ok.

But, I must say, I think even Uruguay has some degree of tectonic activity.

One of my earliest memories is of my mom tucking me in one night when I was about two years old. I remember her talking to me about something, and then going silent and white and staring off into space. It turned out that she had seen the picture frame behind my head start to shift and shake around (I didn't notice it). I remember then going down to the garage and telling my Dad about the earth Quake (it was dark out and he was cleaning stuff or something). We later discovered it was a 2.7, as I recall. Just above the threshold where it's detectable by people.

I live in Massachusetts USa, and even here we can have them. Uruguay should take note!
kate you are in my ignore list so is a pain in the ass to check your post. There's no tectonic activity in my country. You should know a 24 year old girl from my University died in the tsunami in Chile and at least two people I care are really scared- So no offense but I don't fell in the mood to playing dumb with you.

I am sorry to hear that you have friends/loved ones in that situation. I wish you and them the best of luck. I'd imagine it's an awful feeling to live with the worry of that kind of thing hanging over your head, and my sincerest sympathies are with you, 100%

And all I was saying is that the tectonic plates are always in motion, everywhere, to some degree or another. It's just that 99.9 percent of quakes are so weak as to be undetectable by humans and movement of the plates so slow as to be almost noticeable.

EDIT: But that's just the science lesson.

The bottom line is this: I've never been to Chile, but you seem like you have a cool country there. I've always admired the degree of geographic diversity, what with the coasts and all, and it makes me feel bad to see a population living in fear and uncertainty after having two traumatic events in short order like that. I wish you guys all the best and just know that people in other parts of the globe have you in their thoughts

That's all. G' Night

OOoooooh.......

Now it makes sense.... I just loaded the thread up, and the photo I'd originally tried to include (one of a parking complex collapsing during a CGI earth quake) had changed to, yup, a photo of Indian prostitutes

I have no idea why that would happen, but I'll change that image back to one of an earth quake ASAP

PS Was in a prostitution image all along for you guys? Because as late as last night, like I said, it was a photo of the movie 2012 whenever I'd look at it

EDIT: Photo changed, no more indian funny business

Thank you for saying that, RH. That's exactly what's had me so worried recently

I guess what I find most awful about EQs is that there is NOTHING that can stop them. 1) You cannot accurately predict when they will hit 2) Once they hit, there is nothing you can do.

Unlike another disaster like a forest fire or something, there are no 'Earthquake Fighters' that California could dispatch to stop the shaking.

It's a really frightening prospect, IMHO

I think for me the scariest part of 2012 is when that plane takes off, and you see all the people falling out of buildings or off highways or into the gaping maw of the earth itself... there is NO where those people could have run for safety. Everyone was screwed.

I think that's what people don't get about earth quakes, the fact that the danger they pose is not just destruction or devastation, but potentially total annihilation.

On the first day of your job you are letting everyone down. Despicable. Or did your mom fail to drive you to work?

Come on, that's not fair.. I was specifically told that there wasn't a need for a Seismology Tsarina...

(PS I am of the opinion that each new quake should get it's own thread, so in the future we should do that Jan)

EDIT: Plus, Sundays are not a good day for me for staying on top of things. I usually sleep straight through till 3 pm, and generally have a pretty lazy day

EDIT 2: If you guys want to give me the job (and the accompanying official title), I'll be more than glad to take responsibility for failing to report quake news

On a similar note, I had to endure two adult women in the break-room discussing how Jesus was acomin' because all the earthquakes recently... Ever try to explain the simplest terminology of plate tectonics, continental drift, ect. to someone who thinks the planet is 6000 years old?
