That's fuckin' awesome. Get Dr John to do a set and I'll cross dress to get in.

All the news had been good for Constance McMillen, who was supposed to bring her girlfriend to her school's privately sponsored prom on Friday. Except that prom was a decoy.

Can we please ask the 10 respectable people in Mississippi to leave the state, and then just burn the fucking place to the ground?
Don't punish the state for being full of jerks.

It makes me feel bad for the Gulf of Mexico.

A decoy prom?! It's like the school system has never heard of a lawyer before..

Nuke the state.

I've seen their education budget.

It's plausible.

Bad enough they shuffled the lesbians off to a decoy prom, but kids with learning disabilities too? Great. Prom eugenics.

If you follow my link above, someone claiming to be one of her classmates has responded to the story. It's... educational.

eta - Assuming that it is one of her classmates, and, therefore, only a child, we should be very, very nice in how we respond/react to her words. I don't want to be the source of a pile-on. Just sayin'.
The comment that has a picture of 4 of the girls dressed up for prom? Caption reads: "This is what happens when you exclude the gays from prom."

Golden.

Wow, so it's not the school system's fault for completely over-reacting and canceling the prom, it's the girl's fault for wanting to go to her prom.

There wasn't malice in what the alleged classmate wrote. It's clear that in this classmate's eyes that the deception was more about Candice being unreasonably uppity than being gay. Misguided as the alleged classmate's opinion is, I can see why they believe their reaction was justified.

I agree, Jcassady. She's a teenager who has grown up in a pretty obviously backwards small town. It must be frustrating and embarrassing to have your school's name dragged through the mud like this. She doesn't know better yet, but I hope that, eventually, she will.

Yeah, I agree that the response is p. dumb and that the entire situation sucks, but at the same time I can sort of understand where they're coming from, especially at 17/18 years old.

It's also just sort of amusingly tragic that (provided that the response is real) all the students against this deal spent a lot of time trying to reclaim something that was theirs all along.
Oh come on, the kid might as well be saying, "None of this would have happened if she'd just kept her mouth shut."
Well, that's what she's saying, but she's also a teenager. I don't agree with her at all, but having been dumb and 17/18 once (now I'm dumb and have 25!), I can understand.
Exactly, it is understandable when a person has no concept of what being "gay" means.
I was horribly homophobic at 18 despite having grown up having friends of the family who were gay, etc. As shitty as it was, that was just part of the Southern cult of masculinity. I didn't HATE gay people per se, I was just incredibly nervous around them because I didn't really have any perspective and someone being openly gay in podunk East Texas was a really, really rare thing.

Once I moved out here and actually got to know gay people on an individual basis and learned more about the whole scene and the politics behind it all, I made a gigantic fucking frog-leap to the other side of the ideological spectrum. In hindsight I'm kind of embarrassed that I used to be so homophobic...but I was also an idiot teenager.
Someone started a facebook group in order to bash the girl in question, but it sort of backfired as all the comments are from people who support her.
Yeah, I think the group blew up after someone posted the link on the Jezebel article's comments.

Just curious, were you a 'jock' in high school?

EDIT: And your avatar fits gloriously in this discussion.

When I was 15 and getting knocked down stairs and into lockers for my assumed homosexuality, my main tormentors weren't jocks, but snotty, kinda nerdy boys. Puzzling, but true.

Really? The reason I asked Jake that tired question was because I'm from a similar Southern "cult of masculinity", but since I was a skinny artist-type I always sympathized with anyone who was marginalized, long before I was 18.

I would amend Jake's statement slightly to read Texan cult of masculinity. Really is a bit different than other Southern states (at least in my experience).

Although, maybe it is universal. Definitely not just a jock thing. In fact, I recall very rarely being called a fag by jocks.
The teenagers were selfish assholes. But then again, that's like the defining trait of being a teenager. It's more of a problem if the faculty were involved.

While some "jocks" are major assholes, equally as many have the self-esteem necessary to enjoy their life without belittling others. When you witness the type of bullying that goes on within other groups - why, even here on our very own messageboard! - demonizing jocks starts to look pretty juvenile.

Nope! Stoner!

EDIT: To clarify, I played football for a bit but that didn't last long once I found rock, drugs, and girls who liked drugs.

Kinda wish I had stuck with powerlifting though instead of taking a hiatus from lifting until I was 22.

Bobcat Goldthwait gave a lot of good interviews for World's Greatest Dad that double as a commentary on this nonsense.

My experience was that it was junior high were all that bullying "fag" nonsense would occur and that by the time folks got to high school, it calmed down considerably. Maybe I was just lucky enough to have gone to a slightly more enlightened high school. Or maybe it was because I spent seventh grade in Jupiter, Florida, a wretched hive indeed.

No offense to my Southern Chewer brethren.

And... I went to 4 proms. None of them decoys. Some were cheesy/sad however.

To be honest, I'm pretty damn impressed they managed to pull this off. Think about it: a DECOY PROM, that every single kid except for the rejects knew was a fake, and they made it work successfully. The level of planning and careful communication that goes into an operation like this must have been pretty astounding for a high school event.

I'll just leave this here:

tmcneece@itawamba.k12.ms.us

That's the email address for the superintendent of schools in asshole county MS. I emailed her, and asked her how she slept at night know she was in charge of such incredible bigots.

I read that the young lass knew that the prom was a decoy and went anyway because she knew she wasn't welcome at the other one.

It's levels of organization we haven't seen since 1980s teen comedies.

Growing up in school, the jocks never really caused problems. It was always the would be tough guys, and want be criminals, that cause most problems. Luckily they are not nearly as tough as real jocks, if you are willing to face them down.

Exactly, teenagers are fucked. Simply unbridled Id, narcissistic monsters of selfishness wrapped in the shell of an adolescent human (see my bullying thread). It's the parents and faculty that serious questions need to be asked about and have a light shone on, because no way did a bunch of teens manage to organise something of this calibre on their own.

Are you saying that jocks AREN'T "would be tough guys" and or "wanna be criminals?!?" You're making an awful lot of presumptions there, Bob.

Most aren't, and the really atheistical ones are more worried about scholarships, then anything else. Most really tough guys don't go looking to trouble, and the ones who do either end up dead or in prison rather quickly.

Actually at my high school most of the jocks really were not pseudo tough guys and criminals. A lot of them were goody-goods and goofy nice guys (albeit still pretty popular). In your face, stereotypes!

If you think about it, this incident is pretty much the ending to Frank Capra's Pocketful Of Miracles, only completely turned inside out and with the optimistic, sentimental love of humanity and American goodness replaced with cynical prejudiced cruelty, probably with lots of sneering.
What are you talking about organization? They didn't really need to be clever or crafty to do this. They only needed to be brazen, rude bigots with the support of the local community and the school.
These kids are 18, not 13. I mean, teenagers are morons and so on, but they had a party all organised for them that night that they could have gone to, where they could have danced the night away and ignored their gay clasmate if they so desired. This isn't a case where there was no prom until they decided to hold an invite-only one - the defining trait of this story is the rejection of Constance and the disabled kids, in Constance's case as punishment for daring to open her mouth. To me, that goes above and beyond simple teenaged selfishness.
I can bend around and find reasonable excuses for the behaviour of the teens. But it all stops when one considers that you have had likely hundreds of participants in this decoy conspiration. All the so called grown ups parents, friends, teachers and even bus drivers are pretty much exempt from everything that could be called reasonable, especially considering that people pretty much knew each other in that rural town. It speaks volumes that no one at least rose an eyebrow and thought that this is a bit ridicululous, if only for the fear of life long embarrasment rather than facing the homophobia at hand. I guess it is hard to look in the mirror if one lesbian teenager singlehandedly shows more class and maturity than everyone else involved.
I'd be honestly surprised if it wasn't a group of parents who hatched the idea in the first place.
I don't understand how this situation -- and it is deeply, gloriously fucked up -- serves as a commentary about how today's teenagers are worse than the teenagers from, say, ten or twenty years ago. I went to a public middle school in a football-only town and a Jesuit high school in Ohio (the state founded by the people the South kicked out!), and saw/went through/participated in some nasty, hateful shit. A friend of mine from that high school is transgendered, and she's told me some pretty stomach-turning stories about what she went through, too. And stories like Jake's and Zooey's only prove that. What's the quote about how the most terrifying thing on earth is your average red-blooded American eighteen year old? Yeah, that.

In short, Rain Dog, stop pretending like things were better back then. Again.

That being said, Decoy Prom would be a great name for a band.
