Dial-a-Cliche

Nearly everyone types awful cliches, especially on message boards. I thought this could be a thread for noting them, so they may eventually be purged from the collective unconsciousness. I know, it seems like this doesn't matter at all, but should you not take a moment to note it, and find another way to say what you're attempting - you'll inevitably return to the cliche, not merely on a movie message board, but in daily conversation...which can be tiresome. Anyways.

1. The bottom line is ______

2. Anyways.
3. But I digress.
4. Adverbs are always cliches. Usually.
5. Run-on sentences.
6. "I think", "I thought", "My idea is..." or anything that adds an apologetic tone to your sentence. I can be guilty of this.

"Methinks". That's gotta fuckin' stop.

And using "fail" as a noun.

I know, right?

Seriously?

Even though it seems to have fallen out of favour now, "colour me..." was my least favourite. I wasn't the guy vying for an embargo on the phrase for all non Replacements fans; it just tended to ring a little lazily from too many ephemeral types. It never made me irrationally hate any of these users, but the saying itself did irritate me with its ubiquity.

The one that chafes me the most is using "Really?" as a one-word dismissal of an argument.

EDIT: I see Dan Venture pretty much beat me to it.

Anytime somebody makes a point of typing "Um" at the start of a sentence, I know that smuggery is on the way.

"M'kay?"/"Kay?"

This is turning into "FUCK INTERNET MEMES CENTRAL", but if I could stuff a gasoline-soaked rag into the mouth of the person who started the "NOM NOM NOM" phenomenon and top it off with a lit match, I probably would.

Even if it was a hot chick.

I've been known to drop a one-word reply in the past. I've been razzed for it, in fact.

I advocate more use of "Maybe Logic" on general principle. Too often the language can set us up to create a false sense of certainty about purely subjective statements.

I can't, however, get behind lazy abbreviations like "IMO, "IMHO," or chat-speak in general.

I really don't see how this is a cliche.

Also, the bolded name with a comma is a thing from another board. Basically kind of a callout. I was bored. And the picture was awesome, so that's not the problem.

I can't believe that no one has posted the "I can't believe no one has posted this yet" meme.

Seconded. Also, "Seconded." Makes me feel like the thread is a PTA meeting.

Also, editing posts. Also, double posts.

Also, "Also,".

"I remember when people around here used to actually talk about movies"

Also, I know the AICN boards would fill pages of this, but I want a law that allows the creation of a program that delivers a lethal electric shock to anyone who goes "FIRST! on any forum, anywhere in the internet.

I hate when people use words to convey ideas.

And by people, I mainly mean dreary louse.

See, that wasn't so bad. Hurtful, of course, but also concise, sincere, and using language no more complicated than necessary to make the point.

Kudos on some of your stronger work.

Why thank you, Schwartz. It's been a pleasure.
