WarGames

It is hard for me to believe that a search for a thread about this movie turned up nothing on these forums, I was almost positive that I saw one not to long ago. Feel free to include a link if you find it.

Anyway I just watched this again after a long hiatus, my last viewing of it was at least 10 years ago, and it is still a top notch film.

I love how there is very little fat in the movie, every scene is necessary to establish either a story beat or a plot point.

It also struck me on this viewing that if there ever was a template to how to make a movie of the book Ender's Game, this movie would be it.

I'm not talking about plot here, this is how a movie of Ender's Game should feel, lean and edge of your seat but no real "actiony" scenes (The games Ender plays in the zero-g gymnasium should be filmed more like a game than an action battle scene). The climax in WarGames is elegant in its simplicity, it is people watching a screen, helpless, hoping that the the computer will catch on to the idea of futility. The Climax to Ender's game isn't the same, but it is also elegant in it's simplicity and those who have read the book will see the similarities.

For the time it was made it was a big film mainstream wise. It was dated 10 years later let alone almost 30 now. Love the opening with Spencer and a really young Michael Madsen. The work from the supporting actors is actually what really sells it (John Wood, Dabney Coleman and Barry " I love the faces you make " Corbin). Ally Sheedy was so cute in this (god she looked scary at the Oscars recently). Besides its a John Badham film.

From 83 to 87 he was on a good streak.

Stakeout (1987)
Short Circuit (1986)
American Flyers (1985)
WarGames (1983)
Blue Thunder (1983)

As for Ender's Game interesting comparision but I don't see it. I think Wolfgang Petersen circa Enemy Mine would have been better than now (he's still attached to it right?).

You gotta love any film that features a tour group walking through America's top secret missle defense headquarters.
"OH NOES YOU JUST TRIGGERED ARMAGEDDON!"
*Galaga sound effect*
"lol JK!"

This has what's pretty much a Barry Corbin signature role. "We've had men in those silos since before any of you guys were watching Howdy Doody! Now, for myself, I sleep pretty well knowing those boys are down there."

(And I use any opportunity presented to say "What kind of an asshole lives on an island and doesn't even have a boat?")

In case you hadn't caught this, Wired ran a pretty good article looking back the film with the screenwriters.

I couldn't even begin to tell you how many spark plugs I've offered to piss on because of this movie.
