Possession (1981)

Brilliant, but I'm not sure that I should reveal much about it. If you loved Kramer vs. Kramer, The Tenant or Angel Heart, or even another similar movie to those, and you probably do if you've seen enough movies - watch Possession. I was fortunate enough to be surprised by this one, as it belongs to no genre, yet liberally borrows from a few different ones, at certain points in the story. Fantastic performances, and buggery that has had a lasting impact on anime.

Paid about $30 last January for the OOP Anchor Bay double feature that had Possession and Bava's Shock. Possession is one crazy flick. Isabelle Adjani is smokin' hot, and give one hell of a performance. Sam Neill is pretty subdued until it gets close to the end, but it's Adjani who astonishes. Love the music too. Definitely a movie that needs to be seen.

You know, this reminds me that I still haven't seen the uncut version.

Kramer vs. Kramer???

Yeah, I can see where the comparison could be made, but this bastard is far closer to Eraserhead. Far, far, far closer...

That being said, I recently watched Zulowski's bug-fuck "sci-fi" flick aobut Polish refugee astronuats who populate the moon, On A Silver Globe. Though I still love Possession more (seriously, probably in my top ten favorite films at thsi point), OASG makes this look like It's Complicated. I've seen every Lynch film, most of Cronenberg, all of Jorodowsky (save Fando Y Lis), some Bunel, the Quay Brothers, and plenty of other surreal films, be they art or exploitation, foriegn and American. I feel that my I've got my credentials when it comes to talking about weird ass movies. That being said On A Silver Globe is the wierdest fucking movie I've ever seen.

If you can make it through the three most trying hours of your film-watching life, then you will be rewarded with shots that will haunt you for the rest of your life. That movie is simoultaneausly the most pretentious and straight up metal thing yet put to film.
