Going Away for a Bit...Again - Page 2

And suddenly the 14 mile hike I do through the Greenbelt doesn't seem so impressive...good work!
Impressive. Most impressive.

Congrats Doc - didja meet any classical hillbillies? Didja have a banjo duel? Didja kill anything with a bow and arrow?
That photo is biblically epic. Huge thumbs-up to you! Now... more photos!
This is seriously one of the most amazing things one could do. I congratulate you and envy you beyond belief.

Good to have you back.
Welcome back and congrats! Quite the accomplishment.
Congrats. Amazing photo. I would like to read a few stories of the weird people you found.
Congrats!

I feel like you're about to become a disillusioned time traveler. Enjoy Inception and Scott Pilgrim though!

Doc, is your real name Jackie Earle Haley?

Jumping on the "welcome back" bandwagon... and a huuuuge push for the collected Doc Happenin trail diaries.
Cooooooooool

So jealous.
Doc, are you a giant? How is it your knees are above the sign? This is really cool. I spent four days hiking the Inca Trail and thought I would die. I give you mad props for accomplishing what you did. Seriously, not many people could do it. I hope you share more stories and pictures of your adventure. Many of us would love to read about it.

Oh, they were enjoyed. Enjoyed immensely.

Thanks for the welcome back everybody! Tis good to be back. And Diva, there's a plank behind the sign that I'm standing on in that picture, so I'm not actually on the ground.

As for being JEH...wouldn't be so bad, I suppose.

KATAHDIN sounds like a name that would fit right into Middle Earth.

It means 'greatest mountain', and is essentially the biggest thing on the horizon for fifty miles. A lonely spike in the middle of the world, I half expected to find a dragon there.
Was this at all one of those weight loss things? Is there a before picture where you're pushing 300 lbs? Serious question.

You should be more mindful of your surroundings!!! Though... I suppose at that point, you were so happy to have made it that nothing else mattered.
I'm winded just looking at the pic. Can't imagine making that entire trek. Well done!
Doc, I am filled with awe.

Nooj. I like you.

Doc, I'm hatching a scheme to go to Ireland to go do the Wicklow Way trail, it's nothing compared to yours (only 8-10s, passing through a few villages on the way). I've never been hiking that extensively before...so...any tips? Seeing as you have attained master status.

I've hiked the Wicklow trails. The maps are color coded so you can follow trails that suit your ability. Be careful of overestimating your abilities though. I started at the intermediate level, and somehow managed to get myself on the expert level. It was a bit hairy at times. But the view was totally worth it.
Thanks Diva!

....This concerns me. The group I'm going with are relatively seasoned vets of the trail, and are really into hiking....So there is a very disparate level of experience going on.
Honestly, the Wicklow trails weren't too difficult. I went by myself so that's why it was hairy. I imagine if you are with a group of people, the narrow or steep parts of the trail won't be so hard because you'll have support. And it was totally worth it. The pictures I have at the top of the Glendalough mountains were amazing.
You're a goddess, Diva.
Have you ever posted any of these amazing photos, Diva?

This was the sign warning me from entering the expert trail. Hiking boots? Nope. Compass? Nope. Map? Yes! Rain coat? Nope. 1 out of 3 ain't bad, right?! I survived. You can do it!

On Facebook. Because I was by myself in Ireland, I didn't take a lot of photos and certainly not while hiking. If you do a search, there is a thread on CHUD of my trip to Peru and me reaching Machu Picchu after hiking the Inca Trail.

ETA: The best part of my Ireland trip. Fresh brewed Guinness at the brewery.

How incredible in Dublin Guinness???? Nectar of the gods Diva no question.
Pretty!

Not the Guinness stuff! The views from your hike!

Teetotaler walkin' here!!!
AWESOME NEWS, Doc! Congratulations! While this is an entirely different kind of thing, I had such a huge rush of emotions and sense of accomplishment after I finished my first marathon. I can't even imagine what you felt like when you finished.

I hope this changed you in some way, life lessons, time to reflect etc etc...

But really though, great job! Glad you made it out alive with what I bet are some great stories to tell for the rest of your life.
I know you're already a pretty thin guy, but did you actually lose a noticeable amount of weight on your quest?

Not a noticeable amount, but I did manage to lose about 25 pounds. And I have absolutely no idea from where. Still only about 170 right now. So it's a great weight loss program! You can eat whatever you want, eat a ton of it and still manage to lose weight.
Hiking all day burns fat & builds muscles. Your shape shouldn't change, just what's underneath.

So, after that last adventure, even though I swore 'Nope! Not doing it again, can't do it again.' I'm heading out West to attempt a thru-hike of the entire Pacific Crest Trail from the end of April to beginning of September. 2600 miles, more or less. It gets in your blood, distance hiking. I've been dreaming about it, my legs have been itching to get back out there. Turns out my schedule can line up perfectly with the hiking schedule, save for one thing: I need to sublet my apartment in Brooklyn. So, I come to you, knowing full well what a hive of scum and villainy this place is and though you're slightly above craigslist, I'm tossing out the Want Ad for any social circle I might travel in. 4 months, PM me for details if you or someone you can vouch for is interested in an apartment over the summer.

Am I too trusting? Yes. But don't worry, I'm hoping to come back with a grizzly's pelt this time.

Someone cue up the Into The Wild soundtrack, stat!

In all seriousness tho Doc, thats fuckin awesome mate, you're a bloody inspiration sir.

Have fun, mate! Be sure to punch some local fauna in honour of Liam Neeson.

Hey all. What have I missed? Ran off without properly saying goodbye. I left last Thursday for San Diego and am currently about 110 miles into the trip (the total is 2600+). I wanted to let you, you crazy messed up chewers, in on the action. You can follow me on twitter @ThreeBearsPCT. I update at least once a day letting people know where I'm at, and will occasionally toss in some pictures of what's going on along the way.

So, how's The Avengers?

God, I need a shower...

Doc Happenin, I am so impressed by your quest.  Bravo.  Also:  pics!

Hurm. Seems as if I have fallen behind. Hard to find computers to upload to and 3G reception can be somewhat limited out here in the middle of nowhere. But here's an update! At mile 702, which is more or less the end of the (fucking god awful motherfucking hot and eternally fucking burned) Southern California desert. To the north lie the High Sierras and Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the lower 48. I feel like some weird hairy Sasquatch-Tyrannosaurus combination, ridiculously strong legs, weak ass arms with an overgrown weed on my face. As soon as I can find a way to upload more photos I will, but here's a little something from day one:

Not so triumphant at the moment. Just tired.
