Astro Boy (2009)

My mom tells me that I was an Astro Boy (called Atom in Korea) fiend when I was a toddler. I drew him, I sang the theme song. I went to bed with the cassette tape for the soundtrack. Other than awareness of the character, I don't remember any of that and have never felt any nostalgia for the character.

This movie did nothing to change that. Utterly bland and forgettable from top to bottom with the exception of John Ottman's main theme for the film. It's really quite delightful and promises a much better movie than was actually made.

Really... I have nothing else to add about this.

Maybe I just grew a big, sloppy vag in my old age, but I thought this was kind of a harsh movie for kids. Bear in mind I knew nothing about Astro Boy prior to watching this.

Spoiler warning?:

Robot scientist treats his kid like shit, inadvertantly gets his kid KILLED during a test of his new robot. Builds robot replacement that has his dead son's memories and no idea it's a robot, which he discards extremely callously after like, an afternoon. Distraught Astro finds some sense of family with a kindly robot repair man and his misfit kids, only to find out the guy is actually a total asshole who just wants Astro to get smashed to hell for amusement, and said kids turn their backs on him because he's different. Dad ends up deactivating Astro at the request of the government, who has been trying to kill Astro the whole time just because the mayor needs to get re-elected.

Yeah, it comes up sunshine and daisies in the end, but wow.

Hahahaha. That's weird that I didn't even take note of any of that. Because you're right. It must've been because the movie was so utterly lifeless that I couldn't bring myself to care to notice.

The way you describe it, it sounds like a great fairy tale. A real fairy tale where you can accept the darkness you describe. I would've actually liked that.
