Photo compression software

I'm sure you guys might have some good recommendations for this. I'm looking for a good cheap/free option for taking batches of high-res photos and compressing them to lower-res copies in bulk. Googling brings up plenty of options but I don't want any buggy and/or virus laden garbage. Also, it needs to be completely idiot-proof.

Download GIMP (second only to Photoshop in its ability to manipulate images and ... best of all ... Open Source).

Then Google Is Your Friend.
