Uzumaki on Sundance Channel, `case anyone cares

Well, just thought I'd pipe this in.
Anyone who has the Sundance channel, the other night, my mom noticed in the TV Guide that "Uzumaki" (you should've seen the look on her face when I damn near tore the thing from her hands ) was to be on Sundance. (thank God we got that Digital Cable upgrade two weeks ago. )

It was on this morning at about 4AM PST. The next showing supposedly is on Friday, at 11:05 (PST).

I taped and watched 30 seconds of it. Ugh, it made me dizzy. O_O
Dunno if it's editted in anyway, content or otherwise. It's letterboxed and subtitled (as if any other way wouldn't be punished with decapitation).

Just thought I'd mention it to anyone who hasn't heard or is interested. *shrug* Delete/close this if it means nothing.

Thanks Evil! Very very cool news! You are to be commended, my friend.

Uzumaki is indeed a wonderfully fucked-up film.

Evil, thank for the heads up. It will be on in 4 and a half hours. Never seen it before, but Creech's review sounds very promising.

It's pretty interesting but definitely not for everyone. And it's definitely not the best way to introduce yourself to Asian horror. But for those with really eclectic tastes, it's a must-see. As silly as it is, I found it to be unnerving in its own way.

Uzumaki is very much an acquired taste, and definitely not the best introduction to Japanese horror. Not so much scary, as it is just plain indescribable and fucked up. Very funny at times, too. I liked the kid who jumped out at odd times to try and scare the girl. And the "eyes" scene was... fun.

the 2 of 3 translated english graphic novels of Uzumaki kick mucho ass, and contain so much more than the movie. it's like the director of the movie decided to do the set-up of each scenario ( snails, boy who scares people, etc.) and leave out the incredibly disturbing pay-off! the best parts are left out, and other stories ( usually the best ones ) are discarded. if you even remotely liked the movie, get both graphic novels right friggin' now! oh, and i loved the movie as well.

Okay, I just want to give a heads up that this film is showing in Sundance on Friday Night (July 26) at 11:00 pm (EST).

Here's the info:

Man, I waited until 11 pm on that night only to see some Heather Mattarazzo flick. Not that it's bad, but I was looking forward to some Nihonjin carnage!

My VCR should be recording the film right now at my house. I will commit harakiri if I accidentally recorded Jerry Springer instead.

Let me first say that is was supremely weird (in a good way) and express my anger that I did not tape it. Yes I saw it from beginging to end and enjoyed it but I am that pissed that I didn't have any blank tapes to record it on. My friends depend on me bringing them a wierd movie to watch every month or so and if I recorded this I could have topped any other movie that I ever showed them.

Damn! The Sundance channel website says that there will be no more showings of Uzumaki any time soon.

If you really want I could try and burn my DVD copy of Uzumaki.
No thanks but could you tell me where you got your copy?

I stayed up to watch it and fell asleep through parts. (I'm used to going to bed early and have been landscaping at my parents which has worn me out. So my sleeping is not the movie's fault. wink )
Anyway, I have a few questions.
Did they ever explain what was happening?
Why was everyone so obsessed with spirals?

Was the girl with the hair at the end supposed to be the main character? I thought that I had seen those earings on one of the other girls at her school, but I saw that in my semi comatose present from the sandman.

I thought that the visuals were cool and that the gore was rather disturbing. I liked the movie, but it would have been better if I hadn't been drifting off from time to time. The only thing that bothered me was some of the music, but that is a personal taste sort of thing.

you can buy uzumaki for very little money on DVD at dddhouse.com, an excellent and trustworthy hong kong dvd shop. btw, the third and final Uzumaki collection from Viz should be out in October, at which time Viz will also start publishing Orochi: Blood, which is supposed to be another greatly fucked up Japanese horror comic. btw, for fans of the trippiness that is Uzumaki, also check out the Tomie comic books by same author. the movie was arse, but the comics are beyond weird.

i have every Junji Ito comic collection avilable at this time, and am anxiously awaiting the 3rd volume. where does it say when they will release it?

I think I may have to watch the film again. I'm like Bill: I fell asleep in a couple of scenes. It just somewhat dragged.

What I can say though is that it is a quirky type of horror film. It's very "cartoony." Because of that, I wasn't really terrified, even when I witnessed some truly gruesome moments. It's like a live-action anime.

But the images were something that I won't easily forget. My favorite part:

I will have to see it again. I like weird flicks, but this one takes the cake!
