Your treasured rare DVDs.

I'm bouncing off the walls right now because I just received in the mail a real, sho'nuff non-bootleg copy of SCARLET & BLACK (1993) starring Ewan and Rachel Weiz. (My icon is from the film.)

It's from Hungary, but it includes the original English track.

*KEYMASH OF JOY*

I now have *almost* every rare Ewan item I know of to this point, including

Happy M'Gee (student film co-starring Jude Law)
Solid Geometry (directed by his uncle, Wedge Antilles, and co-starring the great Peter Capaldi)
Anno Domini
Family Style
Lipstick on Your Collar

A couple of the short films finally found their way to YouTube in the last couple of years, and up to 3 or 4 years ago Solid Geometry could still be purchased from the original distributor. Lipstick on Your Collar is still only on VHS, unfortunately.

But I'm over the moon for Scarlet & Black. This is a dream come true.

So it put me to thinking: what rare or bootleg DVDs hold a special and treasured place in your collection?

The only DVD I have that is rare is the Oldboy Ultimate Edition from South Korea.

I remember hearing The Ultimate Toy Box set for Toy Story 1 and 2 was as well...I have that too.

'the Devil's Advocate' pre-recall. It's the one that still has the sculpture behind Pacino's desk. This was going for some big money for a while on eBay.
'Little Shop of Horrors', the recalled version that David Geffen was pissed about.
OOP Criterion DVDs for 'the Killer', 'Hard Boiled', and 'RoboCop'.

Why was he mad about it?

Legit Criterions of Hard Boiled, Silence of the Lambs, Robocop, the Unbearable Lightness of Being, Straw Dogs, Ran, and Criterion Blu Rays of The Third Man and Pierrot Le Fou.

Others: 3 Disc Oldboy

I have a bunch of OOP dvds as well, but they don't mean as much
post #6 of 60
Dunno how rare it is, but it's incredibly hard to find in retail stores here in Melbourne: I love my tin case box set of Kingdom Of Heaven:The Directors Cut.

Because he's a douche, pretty much. That link explains all.

The only DVD I have that applies here is the OOP Criterion DVD of Robocop, which I found in the used section of an FYE almost 2 years ago, if you can believe it.

I think the only one right now is the Criterion HARD BOILED. I used to have a decent collection of rare and bootleg cult movies on VHS but I think pretty much all of them are available on DVD now. I mostly love the level of accessibility we have these days, but part of me misses the thrill of the hunt and the sense of true obscurity. But I guess for every once rare movie that's on DVD now there are like a dozen that still aren't, so there's always a new frontier to explore.

I keep selling mine off for desperate money.
I got $80 for Begotten, $60 for Oingo Boingo Farewell Concert, $35 for Criterion Hard Boiled...
I'm still looking for someone to unload my Austrian Punisher (Lundgren) set with the workprint, my original 2-disc special edition of Army of Darkness (numbered), and my Austrian Rituals (The Creeper) big box. I've also got the original release of Tobe Hooper's Eaten Alive, which was released to critics a year before the disc finally came out. It has a much better transfer and different extras. I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to sell it.

I'm still really happy with my limited 2-disc edition of "Munich." The packaging and artwork on it is so much classier than the vanilla single disc edition.

I also have OOP copies of "Madman" and "Night of the Demons" that are selling for a decent amount online, but I'm not a big fan of either of them.

Yeah, it's funny how when Netflix hooked up with Criterion it became a lot more pleasant to scroll through the Watch Instantly section. More like a little art gallery than a magazine rack. Semi-related: Disney is the worst for mucking up DVD releases with less than substandard artwork, especially for the classics.

I have the extra features for review purposes, but they gave me the crap vanilla disc art. Has anyone every figured out why it was oop so quickly?

I just saw this in a store and really want it.

I have a tin box edition of Akira that's pretty cool to brag about, though I don't think it's all that rare.

That Little Shop cut ending is staggeringly dark. Really cool.

It was released in a span of a couple months where Universal was releasing some of their DVDs (off the top of my head I can think of "Munich" and "Jarhead") in very limited 2-disc releases and charging a premium price for them. I'm guessing Universal was thinking about cutting down special features around this time, and wanted to see what kind of sales these two disc sets brought in.

The only place I could find "Munich" was at the local furniture mart's entertainment section after going to every Best Buy/Target/Walmart in town. I'm glad I made the effort to find it though. The packaging is just amazing. It even comes with a criterion-like booklet.
I was pretty stoked when my buddy gave me a copy of the out of print Criterion Edition of Dead Ringers. That topped the time I picked up the OOP Criterion Robocop off of eBay for under $40.

Yeah, I've got that one too, probably the only rarity besides that 2-Disc Munich I've got left. It's out of print, but there's still lots of 'em floating around. I keep it just because the featurette about the soundtrack is fantastic for being so short.
Criterion for Robocop and Silence of the Lambs. The steel case for Akira.

I do have the snapper case version of the Mystery Science Theater movie. Since it was re-released it's not worth much anymore sadly.
I've got all the cowboy bebop collection + movie fitting in the limited edition cowboy bebop BOX. If you look at the outrageous prices it is selling for on Amazon.com, I guess I'm lucky to have them all.

This is the version I have.

If I remember it correctly, it only cost me $20
post #21 of 60
turns out there are many bootleg versions of the perfect sessions as well..
Most likely what I bought was a bootleg, but damn it looks good and the case is top notch.
Criterion Robocop, The Killer, Hard Boiled (nearly got a Salo back in the day too)

Clownhouse

Savage Streets

Dead of Night/Queen of Spades

The Entity

The Woman in Black

plus others that aren't coming to me right now
post #24 of 60
The OOP Anchor Bay MARTIN disc (in the correct aspect ratio).
Not much... I've got the numbered Army of Darkness with a decently low number. Criterion Robocop, and a bunch of other Criterions that I'm not sure if they're rare or not like Withnail and I.
I missed out on Criterion ROBOCOP! The local movie gallery had it and I forgot to go when they had their going out of business sale..

I do have Criterion Silence of the Lambs though
post #27 of 60
Seems like everybody has that ROBOCOP Criterion. Not very rare if you ask me.

I do have the ROBOCOP disc, but I wish I would have gotten THE KILLER and HARD BOILED. I find though ones much harder to track down.
I have a copy of MAELSTROM, this really good and under-seen Quebecois film. No nerdy stuff here. I shall upturn my nose and drink this wine.
Most of my 'rare' DVDs are imports:

Citizen Kane SE (R2)
Evil Dead Book of the Dead edition
Flash Gordon Silver Anniversary edition (R2)- Brian Blessed commentary!
Braindead (R4)
3 Dev Adam
Free Enterprise original release
Bullet In the Head SE (R2)
They Live (R2)- Roddy Piper commentary!

I've also got a modest stash of laserdiscs, including
Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film
Criterion The Princess Bride
Criterion Tootsie
Betty Boop - The Definitive Collection (Republic)
Shanghai Express
Who Framed Roger Rabbit w/uncensored frames
Dreamscape w/ uncensored nudity
The Pirates of Penzance
I have volumes 1 and 2 of Get A Life; they seem to be pretty rare.

Given our community I'm not surprised we all own the damn thing, I just don't know anyone in real life that does. Given the blu ray for Robocop is crap (from what I hear) I'll just stick with this.

The reason I want it is for the Verhoeven commentary track. The track recorded for the trilogy release was done with a group of people and some stupid asshole* talks over everyone else (including Mr Verhoeven) the entire time

Verhoeven commentary tracks were how I used to kill free time back in highschool. The man is insane/brilliant/hilarious. The Robocop one is my holy grail

I have the two-disc of E.T.. I've read it's pretty hard to find.
Other than the Criterion Robocop, my favorite hard to find (and I believe OOP) DVD that I own is of one of my all time favorite films, Parents.
I found The Sword And The Sorcerer in MINT condition last summer for 8 bucks.

I also have an un-numbered version of the Grindhouse releasing LE of Cannibal Holocaust that has the woman on the pike that had to be hand made since no production company wanted to make the set.

Swamp Thing Recalled version.

Albert Pyun's Nemesis. Got this before the prices skyrocketed.

Army Of Darkness: Boomstick Edition.

Swamp Thing: Guardian Of The Earth. All 5 episodes of the cartoon.

Puppet Master: Box set. Not so rare anymore, but you can pretty much only get it at the Full Moon site for a good price during one of their sales.

Manhunter: Divimax Director's Cut.

Savage Streets 2 disc.

Robocop Criterion

Silence Of The Lambs Criterion

Probably some more that I'm forgetting, but I'll go through my list and find them.

I forget that I have some really rare items in my Argento and Fulci collections. I think my favs are the R2 German big box editions of Four Flies on Grey Velvet, Dancing Death (Murder Rock), and Night of the Cardinal (Beatrice Cenci). I've also got a wood box version of Cemetery without Crosses (German), a two disc version of Unsane (Tenebre, Italian), and Five Days of Milan (no subtitles).
Your mention of Fulci reminded me, Gabe.

I like my Anchor Bay copy of The Beyond since it's got that awesome cover art. I know that one's been OOP for a while now.

I also have the Grindhouse Cat In The Brain dvd with the lenticular cover. The only one available now is the one with the regular cover.

Modern Problems with Chevy Chase is another that I've had for quite some time and only found out recently that it's OOP and goes for a lot.

Don't the "bobo" non-Criterions of those have the same extras(commentaries at least)? Not that it matters much, the transfers are terrible. I need to double-dip Hard Boiled like a mofo.

Yeah OOP Criterions for the most part aren't that rare, especially Robocop. I think we all own that one. Wish I had Sid and Nancy though.

I have both The Rock and Armageddon Criterions as well... fun times.. the outtakes for Armageddon are classic

You can buy those on Amazon though...
The 1992 Criterion laserdisc of THE KILLER had a trailer gallery, which if not quite comprehensive of Woo's career was still impressive...something like 15 trailers, including FROM RICHES TO RAGS and a lot of the early Woo titles. Some of them were awesome (ONCE A THIEF - wow, and double wow) but, sadly, the gallery wasn't carried over to the Criterion DVD.
Check it out you guys, I have the Criterion of....Robocop!

Seriously though it's a great DVD, worth boasting about, a pillar of any collection. Though it's available on the vanilla DVD too, I remember the extra goodness in the Director's Cut being a revelation at the time. I randomly chanced upon it at a Best Buy in Florida in early 2002.

The only other OOP thing I have I can think of is the first season of Once And Again. Don't laugh, it's a really good family drama type show from the makers of My So Called Life and Thirtysomething. I'll need to get the 2nd season used sometime, and the 3rd was sadly never released, despite being scheduled with box art and everything.

I know, I just love the fact that I have them.

Are there any "rare" VHS's going for decent money?

For some reason no. I've got some impossible to find stuff and none of it is worth anything, even my NC-17 cut of Man Bites Dog with the rape scene in tact. They really should be more valuable than DVDs because so many of them were only available for stores to buy, so they were expensive to begin with, and there weren't nearly as many of them made.

I'm not bitter or anything.
Aren't most of these OOP Criterions you guys are crowing about non-anamorphic? Would have thought that rendered them damn near worthless. (I have them all too, just curious)
Indeed, Phil. There isn't a single good Robocop transfer in the entire world.

Is that cut on the Criterion?

I actually have an extra copy of HARD BOILED: Criterion. If anyone would like to take it off my hands for whatever's a fair price, PM me.

Yes, but for a long time the only way to see it was in an 'unrated' version, which deleted part of the rape scene, and the whole of the aftermath. The Criterion disc was a totally uncut, NC-17 version.
