Except that Lady Gaga is actually, you know, good.

It sort of reminds me of the whole "Britney/Christina" pop star thing from a few years ago. One has actual talent, one doesn't, but both are pretty vacuous.

I'll just agree to disagree with you on that one Rich.

Um, which is which on the talent/no talent issue?

Christina can actually sing.

Lady Gaga is about as cool as it's possible for a modern pop sensation to be: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJX0G-EvAws

Kind of a shame the tunes aren't as subversive and out there as the costumes, but again as mainstream dance pop goes they're not bad either.

Lady Gaga is absolutely a lot smarter than people give her credit for. The difference between her and 3oh3 is that the ratio of people who get it to the people who don't is much higher. Plus, nothing I've seen indicates that the guys behind "Don't Trust Me" are being satirical.

See also: Roth, Asher

Finally, there's nothing wrong with music that's got a good beat you can dance in a club to, you old farts. Lilly Allen doesn't count.

I don't care much for her music (it's ok, I guess, but I prefer other stuff), but it's great to see someone being true to themselves and succeeding. She does her own thing and doesn't appologise for it. Plus, I think it's pretty awesome how she is single handedly making celibacy cool again.

I'd much rather have her rule the pop music scene than someone like Britney Spears or N'Sync or whatever (can you tell how long it's been since I listened to pop music?)

It's just annoying that this thread has turned into another "Lady Gaga and the Black Eyed Peas suck waaa I am old and cranky and mad my D&D campaign set to music never made it to the top 40" fest, when the original subject is far more deserving of your scorn.

I mean, if Lady Gaga is the worst you can come up when it comes to pop, let me introduce you to Drake. To Ray J. To Pitbull (not counting "I Know You Want Me.") To Colbie Callet. To Sarah Barilles. To Jason fucking Mraz. To the Jonas Brothers. To little Justin Bieber and Demi Lovato and on and on and on...

I don't even know who that person is, but I did know Lady Gaga so I decided to comment on that

(the person the thread is about)

I still don't know who Ray J is and why he's so popular.

He's Brandy's little brother and Snoop Dogg's cousin who makes terrible R&B music. But more importantly, he tapped Kim Kardashian's humongous ass in a very public sex tape.

I think it's very much to my credit that I have no idea who/what you are talking about.

PS Someone should start a Lady Gaga thread, IMHO.

EDIT: I do know Mr Dogg though. He's cool I guess.

EDIT: Not true in every instance of course

This is what led to my comment about Lady Gaga having talent. The tunes aren't bad, and are actually pretty catchy, they're just not a serious as she'd seemingly like them to be because they're so asinine. But she's miles above someone like Kesha (who I admittedly have less exposure to), who just seems to be trying to coast on sex appeal and no talent, as evidenced by the over-reliance on autotune.

Eh, as I mentioned before, I think just going out there and making celibacy cool is in it's own way pretty subversive. It's really refreshing to see someone being true to themselves and being respected for it.

Her music is OK, I mean, I'd much rather listen to THE DOORS or gaelic world music or Ravi Shankar or something... but if I were forced to dance , I'd much rather dance to one of her songs than most of the nonsense I hear on the radio

It's not the lyrics so much as the music itself. I'd love it if a video as odd as Bad Romance was matched with some kind of genre breaking glitch pop or something instead of a relatively normal pop tune. But I guess you can't have everything.

Same here, her music makes me want to pull all my hair out. It's truly awful, I've heard that song where she wants to take a ride on some guys disco stick and the puh-puh-puh-poker face one and seriously, why? Why must my ears be subjected to such things?

My main problem with rappers is that they don't even play their own instruments. They just sample other songs and talk fast over them. Honestly, it's not even music as far as I'm concerned.

What about rappers that do write their own beats and play their own instruments, a la The Knux or Beastie Boys?

Pretty sure Ripoll was being sarcastic. However, I will throw in that I do have more respect for the Beastie Boys and The Roots for creating their own backgrounds.

Funny reading this now because Die Antwoord have since made my dreams come true many times over:

This portrays such a fundamental misunderstanding of rap. It's like having more respect for Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins because he plays the drums with his knees.

Good god, The Roots. Best live hip-hop/rap act I've ever seen. Outkast is a very, very close second.

The Roots are a seriously legitimate BAND. I highly recommend seeing them live.

Cracked did a really good break down of "Tik Tok" a while ago.
